I moderate the Reddit community r/UFOs, one of the largest online UFO communities It produces a constant stream of sighting reports. That stream is the best and worst thing about the subreddit. On a good night someone uploads clear footage of something that resists explanation, three other people in the same county chime in, and you remember why you volunteered for this. On a normal night it is a blurry dot filmed through a window screen, titled “WHAT IS THIS ORB??”, posted by someone who has never heard of Starlink.

A few months ago we ran a thread asking the community how to improve the sub. One comment stuck with me:

A lot of the sighting posts here are easily explainable as balloons, clouds, out-of-focus drones and aircraft, or Venus/Jupiter. It does get old after a while. I don't know what the solution is, maybe require sighting posts to include why they're not those things somehow.

That comment became a spec. The result is ufosighting.report, a permanent, searchable, media-backed archive of the community's sightings, plus a submission pipeline designed to raise the floor on report quality. This post is the longer story behind it: what it does, what the data revealed once I could see it in aggregate, and some notes on how it is built.

The quiet problem: sightings rot

Before the quality problem, there is a preservation problem that most people never notice.

Reddit is a terrible archive. Users delete their accounts and take their posts with them. Posts get removed. And even threads that survive slowly decay, because Reddit re-encodes uploaded media aggressively and old media links eventually stop resolving. Some of the most interesting sighting reports from even two years ago are now text skeletons with dead video embeds. If any of this material ever turns out to matter, it will matter as a body of evidence, and bodies of evidence should not depend on whether a stranger keeps their Reddit account.

So the first job of the site is boring and important: every post flaired “Sighting” on r/UFOs is ingested automatically, media and all. The video files, the images, the top comments, the original text. Around 8,000 sightings going back to early 2024 are already in, and new ones arrive within minutes of being posted. If the author later deletes their post, the archive keeps it, clearly labeled with what happened to the original. Reports that our own mod team removed for breaking the rules stay stored but out of the public archive; spam does not become history just by getting old.

Turning prose into pins

A Reddit sighting post is unstructured prose. “Saw this over the lake near my house around 9 last night” is a location and a time to a human and neither to a database.

The pipeline runs every incoming post (title, body, and the author's follow-up comments, because the useful details are always in a comment) through an LLM extraction step that pulls out the date, time, timezone, and location when they are actually stated, then geocodes the location to coordinates. I deliberately do not let it guess object shape, size, or behavior; free text is too easy to over-read, and hallucinated structure is worse than none. Dates and places it cannot corroborate stay blank.

About four in five archived sightings ended up with usable coordinates. That is what makes the map possible: nearly seven thousand pins, filterable by date. Set the date range to mid-November through late December 2024 and watch the New Jersey drone flap bloom across the East Coast. It is one thing to remember that period as a news cycle and another to see it as a point cloud.

What the data says once you can actually query it

Here is where it got fun. Once thousands of reports are structured, you can ask questions that are impossible to ask of a subreddit.

The hotspot map you expect is a population map. Every raw heatmap of UFO sightings lights up over big cities, because that is where the people are. Texas ranks second in raw sighting counts. Adjust for population and Texas falls to 35th. California drops from first to 15th. The map has a per-capita mode that normalizes each area against its local population, and when you flip it on, the glow migrates away from the metros and settles over the desert Southwest: Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, plus a hot stripe of coastal New Jersey from the drone flap. Phoenix Lights country, Area 51 country, Roswell country. I make no claims about why. Reporting culture, dark skies, military airspace, and folklore all plausibly feed it. But the pattern is real and it is not where the people are.

Military bases are nearby more often than chance suggests. In the highest-anomaly states, 56 percent of sightings fall within 50 kilometers of a military installation, against 43 percent elsewhere. Bases sit on exactly the kind of open land that produces good sky views, so treat that gap gently. It is still an interesting gap.

A lot of UFOs have prosaic flight plans. For every mapped sighting with a time and place, the site computes what was actually overhead using orbital data: ISS passes, Starlink trains, bright satellites, and rocket launches. Of the sightings checked so far, roughly one in five coincided with a Starlink train visible from that location at that time. Two hundred and eighteen lined up with an ISS pass. Sixty-two happened within hours and a few hundred kilometers of a rocket launch, and a twilight rocket plume is responsible for more panicked video than almost anything else in the sky. Each sighting page shows this context automatically, along with links to historical aircraft traffic for that day and a sky chart for that exact spot and hour. The point is not to debunk anyone. The point is that “what else was up there” should be one click, not one research project.

Raising the floor on new reports

The other half of the site is the submission wizard, which is my answer to that comment from the feedback thread.

Posting a sighting through it requires actually describing the event: where, when, shape, movement, duration, distance, the “five observables” questions, and, centrally, a mandatory field asking why this is not a common object. You have to write down what you ruled out before the community sees it. It is friction, on purpose. Low-effort reports are cheap to produce and expensive for everyone else to wade through, and a little typing rebalances that.

Then there is the media handling, which I think is the strongest technical argument for the site:

• Originals are preserved untouched. Reddit re-encodes everything you upload. The site keeps the exact file, byte for byte. Upload from an iPhone and the original HEIC goes into storage, not a recompressed JPEG.
• Metadata becomes evidence, with consent. On upload, the site reads the file's EXIF: camera model, lens, exposure, capture time, GPS, even the compass heading you were facing. For a sighting, that heading is gold; it lets anyone reconstruct your exact view of the sky and check it against satellite and aircraft positions. You see everything the file contains before publishing, with checkboxes to withhold device details, timestamp, or location.
• Withheld means scrubbed, not hidden. If you choose not to share GPS, the coordinates are stripped from the published file itself. Privacy that depends on nobody checking is not privacy.

Finally, submissions are tied to Reddit identity. After you submit, a bot DMs you a verification link, and only after you confirm does the sighting go live and post to r/UFOs under your username, marked verified. Anonymous drive-by noise gets expensive; standing behind your report gets easy.

What is next

The shape and object data on new submissions will compound over time into something genuinely queryable, and I would like the community to help enrich the older records the same way a wiki fills in gaps. More viewing angles on the data are coming. And if you have ideas, the whole point of building this for a community is that the community gets a say.

On January 20, 1996, three young women (Liliane, Valquíria, and Kátia) claimed to have encountered a strange creature on a vacant lot in Jardim Andere, a neighbourhood in the small Brazilian city of Varginha, Minas Gerais. What followed became one of the most controversial UFO cases in history: allegations of military capture operations, hospital cover-ups, a soldier's mysterious death, and a formal military inquiry that generated thousands of pages of documentation.

I recently obtained and translated 13 declassified Brazilian military documents, totaling over a million characters of Portuguese text, that were released to Brazil's National Archives. These include the complete Military Police Inquiry (IPM No. 18/97), the Brazilian government's formal response to Congress about UFO documentation, Air Force sighting questionnaires, and a 1971 military intelligence report that places UFO activity over Varginha a full 25 years before the famous incident.

Here's what they contain.

The Documents

The files fall into several categories:

All original documents are available as PDFs on this archive. The English translations quoted below were produced from the text of these scans. In February 2025, the source PDFs were reprocessed, recovering substantial content from six of the nine IPM volumes that had been unreadable in the initial text extraction, including complete witness testimonies, investigation reports, and newspaper interviews.

“Hotel Traffic”: Brazil's Code Name for UFOs

One of the first things that jumps out from the documents is that the Brazilian military had an extensive, formalized system for tracking UFO reports. They called it “Tráfego Hotel”: Hotel Traffic.

The inventory document (Listagem 4o Recolhimento) catalogs ten groups of envelopes covering 1990-1999, each containing standardized questionnaires, classified correspondence, and analyses. The Air Force used forms designated AD.9-52 and AD.9-53, all stamped CONFIDENTIAL, with a consistent 14-question structure covering the date, time, position, shape, color, speed, sound, trajectory, duration, witnesses, physical evidence, and observer credentials for each sighting.

The inventory alone runs to 68 pages listing hundreds of individual sighting reports, each filed with the names of the observers and the military personnel who received their statements. Typical entries read like this:

“Questionnaire on occurrence of unidentified flying object, of 06 March 1990. Confidential. Currently the document is unclassified. Questionnaire answered by Mr. Araujo Silva Terceiro. Information received by Third Sergeant Doca.”

Report after report, year after year, decade after decade. This was an institutional operation.

As the government's 2010 response to Congress explains, the system dates back decades:

“As early as 1978, in an internal document, the Minister of the Air Force directed the Air Force General Staff to organize a 'UFO Registry' in which observed phenomena would be chronologically archived. He also directed the creation of an 'Evaluation Commission,' which was to assign a degree of reliability to the data presented. Finally, he directed that this Commission be composed of Officers free from preconceived ideas or personal opinions.”

In 1989, responsibility was transferred to what became COMDABRA (the Brazilian Aerospace Defense Command). The documents show a steady stream of formal correspondence between regional air commands (CINDACTA I, II, III), civilian ufology groups, foreign researchers, and even the Brazilian Navy and Presidency.

1971: UFOs Over Varginha, 25 Years Before the Famous Incident

Perhaps the most surprising document is a 1971 military intelligence report from the Ministry of Aeronautics' Security Information Division. Classified CONFIDENTIAL, it describes UFO activity over the exact same locations that would become central to the 1996 case:

“A few months ago, a large part of the population of the City of Varginha (21°35'S – 45°20'W), in the State of Minas Gerais, at approximately 1900 hours, turned their attention to an object of [unclear] shape, dark color, over the neighborhoods of that city.”

“In Vila Mendes, on Rua Rio de Janeiro, the strange object remained stationary near the roof of a residence, one of its occupants having lost consciousness, due to the deafening noise.”

“Circling over the city, accompanied by numerous trustworthy witnesses (doctors, merchants, farmers, etc.), the luminous object headed toward the vicinity of COMA and the Country Club, from where, at a relatively low altitude, it emitted luminous flashes.”

And then the critical detail:

“Taking the direction of the City of Três Corações... the same object... hovering over the ESA (Escola de Sargentos das Armas), of the Army, where some military personnel also reportedly witnessed the event.”

The ESA (the Army Sergeants School in Três Corações) is the same military installation at the center of the 1996 Varginha controversy. The same base whose trucks were allegedly used to transport captured creatures. The same base that launched the Military Police Inquiry.

The same CENDOC envelope also contains a witness testimony from a man named Wilson describing encounters on a farm near the region, including an account of beings arriving in a “large craft” and standing in the farmyard. His housekeeper Dona Geralda told him: “Mr. Wilson — the friends from [unclear] were here waiting. It was a large craft and it illuminated. 'They' — the three of them — opened a door and stood watching.”

The document also references a detailed sighting near Guaratinguetá, where a witness described “a large flying saucer coming from space, beyond the clouds,” about 14 meters in diameter with “a large dome, surrounded by round windows, from which emanated a tinted light.” A pharmacist in Barra de Itapemirim, Espírito Santo, described an object that crashed, initially thought to be a flying disc, it was seized by police. A pharmacist described it as “a large plastic object with light bulbs and tubes, resembling a transmitter of energy.” It was ultimately presumed to be a meteorological balloon from the Navy.

This connection between 1971 Varginha and the 1996 events has received almost no attention in English-language coverage.

1962: The Geraldo Bichara Account at ESA

The 1971 report isn't the only pre-1996 incident at the Army Sergeants School. IPM Volume 07 contains an account from Geraldo Bichara, who describes an encounter in 1962 while serving as a soldier at the ESA:

“He wanted to fire a warning shot, but felt himself completely immobilized. He could only see and hear what was happening. He attempted to shout to call his companion Mauro, the day-duty medic at the veterinary unit, but the shout remained stuck in his throat.”

“He observed the beam of light until then directed upon him move slowly and in silence toward the pharmacy side, causing strong vibration in the fourteen metallic doors of the Engineering sector and on the metallic canoes stored in the boatyard.”

“All the riding horses enclosed in their stalls and even the sick animals needing daily care whinnied in a sudden reaction, kicking, with some enraged ones going so far as to break the chains of the stall at the chest.”

Whether one believes these accounts or not, they establish a pattern: the ESA in Três Corações appears repeatedly across decades of Brazilian UFO reports. The 1996 incident didn't emerge from nowhere.

The Military Police Inquiry: Two Investigations, One Conclusion

The bulk of the documents, IPM Volumes 01 through 09, comprise the formal investigation into the Varginha case. But there were actually two investigations.

The First Investigation (May 1996)

Even before the IPM was opened, the ESA Commander ordered an internal investigation (sindicância) in May 1996, conducted by Colonel René Jairo Fagundes. This investigation, documented in IPM 01, heard testimony from all the named military personnel and produced a clear verdict:

“From the analysis of evidence gathered during this investigation, it is concluded that those cited by the press did not participate in any operation for the transport of [unclear]. It is the opinion of this investigation that the media are mistaken, giving publicity to unfounded claims.”

The investigation was methodical: government expenditure documents for Mercedes-Benz vehicle maintenance totaling R$432.00, commercial invoices from AUTOMACO, and vehicle departure/arrival logs from the Guard Corps were all entered as evidence. The conclusion: the trucks went to Varginha for routine maintenance, nothing more.

The IPM (January-May 1997)

The formal Military Police Inquiry was ordered by Brigadier General Sérgio Pedro Coelho Lima, Commander of the ESA, and conducted by Lieutenant Colonel Lúcio Carlos Finholdt Pereira beginning in January 1997. The trigger was the publication of Pacaccini's book, which the military treated as a potential crime against the Armed Forces.

The Central Question

The book named seven specific military personnel as participants in the alleged capture operation: Lt. Col. Olímpio Wanderlei dos Santos, Maj. Edson Henrique Ramires, Lt. Márcio Luiz Passos Tibério, Sgt. Valdir Cabral Pedrosa, Cpl. Renato Vassalo Fernandes, Pvt. Cirilo Martins, and Pvt. Ricardo Silvério de Melo. The military's task was to determine whether the book's claims constituted a crime against the Armed Forces.

Minute-by-Minute Alibis

The depositions in IPM 02 read like a carefully coordinated timeline exercise. Each witness was asked to account for the movements of the named personnel on January 22-25, 1996, with extraordinary specificity.

Lt. Col. Olímpio Vanderlei Santos accounted for his entire day:

“After the general formation he went to the Command Pavilion to participate in the meeting with the Commander of the School; that after the meeting he went to the BCSv facilities where he began his work related to his specific duties... that he had lunch at the officers' mess, with several military personnel of this School; that he remained the entire afternoon at the School, leaving for his residence at approximately 19:00 hours.”

Maj. Ramires gave an even more granular account, including a detour to the Chief of the Education Division's office to handle a fuel reimbursement, followed by study sessions for the Army Command and General Staff School entrance examination in his study “between 20:00 and 23:00 hours.”

Lt. Tibério's evening movements were verified through civilian witnesses: he visited the home of Mr. Enio Cupolillo from 19:30 to 22:00, and the next evening visited Mr. Ildovan Augusto from 20:30 to 22:00.

Every named officer has a similarly detailed schedule established by multiple witnesses.

The Truck Maintenance Alibi

The military's consistent narrative was that Army trucks seen in Varginha were on routine maintenance runs, not involved in any extraordinary operation. The specific details are almost suspiciously thorough: the Mercedes-Benz dealership was named (AUTOMACO), invoice numbers were cited (No. 003788), the maintenance was described as mandatory and contractual, and even the breakdown of the alignment machine was documented. (AUTOMACO Comercial e Importadora Ltda. is a real company that can be verified in Brazilian commercial registries — the maintenance alibi, at least, is built on a real business.)

Corporal Vassalo testified about the runs:

“This morning he joined a convoy of 2 trucks together with Cpl WELBER to travel to the city of VARGINHA-MG, where periodic maintenance, balancing, and front wheel alignment were performed at the firm AUTOMACO.”

Private Ricardo confirmed one trip was even cut short: “upon arriving, the vehicles did not undergo maintenance because the machine that would perform the alignment was broken, and they returned immediately.”

Notably, the military insists the trucks went to Varginha only on January 25-26, not on January 22-24, the dates when the alleged creature sightings occurred. However, as the ufologists later documented, a Parmalat employee named Eduardo Bertoldo had a different story.

The Repeated Question

Every single witness, without exception, was asked the same question: “Do you know or have you had contact with Messrs. Ubirajara Rodrigues and Vitório Pacaccini?” Every single one denied it, with variations of “he does not know such persons.”

Except one.

Corporal Kleber's Admission

Corporal Kleber dos Reis Domingos gave the most revealing testimony in the entire inquiry. After the standard questions about alibis, he admitted:

“Asked whether he knows or has had contact with Messrs. UBIRAJARA RODRIGUES and VITÓRIO PACACCINI, he answered that he knows Mr. VITÓRIO PACACCINI. Asked from where he knows Mr. VITÓRIO PACACCINI, he answered that said citizen came to his residence together with Professor PETRI, at approximately 22:00 hours on [a day in] April 96. Asked about the reason for the visit, he answered that it was to obtain information about the alleged ET.”

Kleber says he immediately reported the contact up the chain of command:

“He informed Mr. PACACCINI of the seriousness of that situation and the risks that the unwanted presence of such persons, to discuss such a matter, could cause; that he requested from the moment of their arrival that they withdraw, as their visit would put at risk his professional situation before the EsSA Command.”

The inquiry then subjected Kleber to an unusual set of personal questions: his military qualifications, his marriage, whether his wife works, whether he owns a house, whether he owns a car, whether he has health problems, whether he needs money. Questions asked of no other witness. The implication seems clear: they were probing whether he might have been motivated to sell information.

Lt. Col. Vanderlei's Defense: “Disgruntled Subordinates”

The most dramatic testimony comes from Lt. Col. Olímpio Vanderlei Santos, the officer most prominently named by the ufologists as the commander of the capture operation. His deposition in IPM 07 is defensive and pointed:

“Such information being entirely untruthful, even demonstrating total irresponsibility and lack of character on the part of those responsible for this publication.”

His explanation for why he was named is striking: he suggests it was revenge by disgruntled soldiers he'd disciplined:

“Due to having commanded the Command and Services Battalion of the School for three years, probably in the fulfillment of his duties in command, he was obliged to make decisions that may have displeased some military personnel, and he believes that, unfortunately, this story was created by some professional from the ESA with the intent of taking revenge.”

He compared the ufologists' claims to Hollywood:

“The comment is fanciful and quite similar to a scene from the film 'E.T.' by Steven Spielberg, in which the doctors used a tunnel made of plastic material to travel to where the 'being' had been placed.”

He also confirmed that the publicity caused real personal consequences:

“On a personal level the repercussions caused by the matter caused a series of difficulties in his family life, resulting even in health problems, mainly for his wife, who remains in treatment to the present date.”

The “Mudinho” Explanation

In IPM 02, Lt. Col. Maurício Antônio Santos of the 24th Military Police Battalion offered what became one of the official alternative explanations: the girls may have seen a local mentally disabled man nicknamed “Mudinho” (roughly “the little mute one”), who was sometimes seen in the area.

The man has since been identified as Luiz Antônio de Paula, a 23-year-old Varginha resident with severe intellectual disabilities and physical deformities who was nonverbal and known to wander the neighborhood and squat to examine small objects on the ground. The IPM concluded he was the “creature” the girls encountered: “The more probable hypothesis is that this citizen, probably dirty due to the rains and crouching next to a wall, was mistaken by three terrified girls for a 'space creature.'”

The three girls (Liliane, Valquíria, and Kátia) have consistently rejected this explanation for nearly 30 years. They reiterated their original account in filmmaker James Fox's 2022 documentary Moment of Contact and have never wavered publicly. However, one of their own investigators would later complicate this picture (see “Thirty Years Later” below).

The Ufologists' Investigation: Entered as Military Evidence

Perhaps the most extraordinary aspect of the IPM is that it entered the ufologists' entire investigation as evidence, including their book, their website, and detailed first-person accounts. This means that Pacaccini and Rodrigues' investigation, conducted at personal risk over months of clandestine meetings with military informants, is now preserved in official military archives.

The Website as Evidence

The military literally printed out the ufologists' website (ufonline.com, captured in January 1997) and entered it as evidence in IPM 04. The site was run by five organizations including the Brazilian Center for Flying Saucer Research (CBPDV) and CICOANI (Civil Investigation Center for Unidentified Aerial Objects). It opens with a remarkable warning:

“FOR SECURITY REASONS DO NOT SEND ANY VITAL INFORMATION BY E-MAIL. PROVIDE A TELEPHONE NUMBER SO THAT WE CAN CONTACT YOU.”

Rodrigues' Account: The Nurse, the Hospital Director, and the Cover-Up

The website contains Ubirajara Rodrigues' first-person account of the early investigation. After the girls' sighting, he tracked down a nurse at the Regional Hospital:

“She was very reluctant to receive me and speak with me until, finally, she accepted an interview and revealed that, on Sunday, January 21, a strange commotion had occurred at the Regional Hospital. The event involved doctors from outside Varginha, Military Police, and Army vehicles.”

The nurse described being called to a meeting where the hospital director issued explicit instructions:

“According to this witness, the meeting culminated with the following statement from the director: 'Here in Varginha there are some people who really like to get involved with cool things, you know, supernatural, strange things... It is likely that these people will look for you, especially that lawyer, Ubirajara. To these people, you must deny everything. Deny it completely.'”

When Rodrigues investigated at the Humanitas Hospital, a nurse there gave an even more chilling response to two young women who came asking about the creature:

”'You cannot enter here to see that, and even if you could, I would advise against it... you would not want to see it.'”

The Fire Department Denial

Rodrigues' account of confronting the fire department is telling. Captain Alvarenga, when visited, immediately and defensively grabbed the occurrence report to show there was no call about a strange animal. While Rodrigues went to get water, he overheard firefighters loudly mocking the claims:

”'Yeah, it must be a giant toad,' said one. 'No, it must be a devil, hahaha,' added the other.”

Both the Fire Department and the Regional Hospital then sent unsolicited faxes to local television denying involvement, an unprompted response that the ufologists found more suspicious than reassuring.

A later investigation found that fire department logs from January 1996 contained gaps, with missing entries for the relevant dates. Whether this reflects routine record-keeping or something more deliberate remains unclear, but it adds another layer to the department's insistence that no calls were received.

IPM 07 also contains the full IPM testimony of the Fire Department Commander himself. Major José Francisco Maciel Dias Ferreira, 37, Commander of the 13th Special Fire Company based in Varginha, was the specific individual the ufologists named as leading the morning capture operation on January 20. Under oath on March 14, 1997, he mounted a systematic defense.

He stated he was off-duty at his residence on January 20, though in an on-call status. In his absence, command would have fallen to Captain Alvarenga, who resided in the barracks. He argued that as company commander he would have been “one of the last to be activated, after all standard procedures had already been taken.”

He then dismantled the capture narrative point by point: by regulations, all emergency responses require prior confirmation of the call, meaning “the claim that an anonymous phone call would have triggered a Fire Department operation is completely unfounded.” Fire department vehicles are prohibited from transporting “any animal or things that are not part of the normal use of the vehicle.” If such a creature existed, the response would have involved “a series of precautions and procedures” classified as “highly complex,” not the ad hoc capture described in the book.

His most interesting argument was about what was missing from the ufologists' account:

“Another relevant factor for believing the authors' claims to be false was the absence of description of the crowds of onlookers that normally form around Fire Department vehicles, a fact that is common during the course of any typical fire department occurrence... The authors, therefore, if they wanted to truly report the truth, would necessarily have to mention the crowd that would have formed around the location.”

He also noted that press organizations are always quickly notified during operations and that a two-hour capture would inevitably attract media coverage. He cited the fire company's daily occurrence log, which has “a numerical sequence impossible to alter,” as proof that no animal capture was recorded.

On a personal note, he described the lasting damage: constant approaches from “people, press organizations, curious individuals, scholars, and pests,” and conversations that always ended with people saying “tell the truth” — “leading him to understand that these people believe he is lying.”

Pacaccini's Clandestine Meetings

In IPM 05, Pacaccini describes meeting military informants in conditions that read like a spy novel. His first key witness came through a coded message: “The jaguar is going to drink water,” meaning an important witness was about to talk. Another military informant arrived at his home at 3 AM with his wife.

His informant described the ESA's intelligence service, and the description aligns with how S-2 (intelligence) sections actually function in Brazilian Army units:

“These S-2, as they are called, blend into the crowd, wear mustaches, long hair, drive old cars, and behave like civilians... Inside, there is a shed where the S-2 work, surrounded by enormous security, and even the barracks officers do not have access to the location.”

The capture was strategically timed, according to this source, because it happened on a weekend when the ESA was “practically empty, with only guards,” and the intelligence operatives “could enter and exit at any time, without answering to anyone.”

The Parmalat Employee

Eduardo Bertoldo, an employee at a Parmalat factory located on the road between Três Corações and Varginha, provided testimony in IPM 05 that contradicted the military's version of truck movements:

“He told us that, in the month of January, together with another work colleague, they had seen on several occasions an unusual transit of ESA trucks in a constant coming and going in and out of Varginha... during practically an entire week!”

What drew Bertoldo's attention was “the reasonably accelerated pace with which the trucks traveled, having, notably, soldiers armed with rifles in their covered flatbeds, quite typical for troop transport.” He noted that routine truck traffic to Varginha was occasional and slow, not convoys with armed soldiers running all week.

The May 4th Meeting and the Secret Recording

IPM 06 contains Pacaccini's account of the dramatic ufologists' meeting on May 4, 1996, where the military personnel's names were first made public. The scene is vivid.

The auditorium was packed: CNT TV from Paraná, SBT and Globo affiliates, reporters from Estado de Minas and Hoje em Dia, the Correio do Sul, Radio Vanguarda, FM stations from across southern Minas Gerais, and a crowd of ufologists. Pacaccini and Rodrigues began narrating their findings in slow detail.

In the middle of the presentation, Pacaccini's assistant Angélica appeared in the auditorium signaling that someone was on the phone. It was the military informant he had been trying to get on the record for weeks, a soldier who knew about the removal of the creature from Hospital Humanitas. The soldier was at the Três Corações junction and had decided to record his testimony.

Pacaccini slipped out of the auditorium, asking Marco Antonio Petit to help him. He couldn't take Rodrigues (who had the floor) or Claudeir Covo (who was reviewing a manifesto for the meeting's close). Luis Petry noticed them leaving and asked what was happening. Pacaccini lied, “minimizing his curiosity,” because the military man “did not want anyone from the press, trusting only me.”

They picked up the soldier at the Varginha bus station and drove to the empty house where Rodrigues' father lived. In the backyard, next to a wall, they set up a tripod and camera:

“I sat beside the military man, stated my name, his, the time and day. From there, and for thirty minutes, live and in color, we witnessed one of the most incredible narratives known in Brazilian Ufology.”

When the recording was finished, they returned the soldier to the bus station. He mentioned another colleague at the ESA who was also willing to talk but “would just muster courage.” Pacaccini returned to the meeting and resumed his presentation as if nothing had happened.

Then came the moment. He named the military personnel involved in the capture operations: Major Maciel of the Fire Department for the morning capture; Lieutenant-Colonel Olímpio Vanderlei for the Humanitas removal; Captain Ramirez, Lieutenant Tibério, Sergeant Pedrosa in support; Corporal Vassalo, soldiers De Mello and Cirilo as convoy drivers. The auditorium fell silent:

“I confess, that silence in the auditorium was unforgettable, observing that many of those present were surprised at my courage in citing the names of the military and, at the same time, tense and fearful in the expectation that at any moment the Army would come to invade the venue.”

The Soldier Who Tried to Sell Photographs

Sixteen days after the captures, visual evidence almost surfaced. IPM 05 contains an account of a young soldier, approximately 20 years old, who contacted the local SBT television editor by telephone on March 5, 1996, announcing he possessed six photographs and a recorded film of the creature. He wanted R$30,000.

The reporter requested three hours to get authorization from a company director. When the soldier called back, he had already dropped his price to R$10,000. They arranged to meet that night in a square away from the city center.

The soldier arrived “very nervous,” explaining he was a relative of the original contact. Both worked in areas of the ESA where they had the opportunity to film and photograph the creature. But his relative's mother had discovered the plan and was “extremely nervous and afraid, not only of the repercussions but much more because of what would result from that attitude, since her husband was also a soldier.”

He described the creature in detail to the reporter: oily skin, large veins, wide-open eyes, two nostrils without a nose, a very thin mouth. It was inside an enclosed space and “tied to what appeared to be a table, but he wasn't certain because it was covered with a cloth.” The impression was so powerful that he “could not sleep for three nights.”

A second meeting was scheduled for the following day at noon. The soldier was “more agitated than before,” looking over his shoulder constantly, “betraying a fear of being followed stamped in his eyes.” He delivered the bad news: on the night of the first meeting, ESA soldiers had gone to his relative's house, “forcing him to hand over the material.” The relative was then taken detained to the school. His own father, also a soldier, had informed the ESA command.

The photographs and film were confiscated. The soldier vanished. Pacaccini's frustration with the SBT reporter who let the opportunity slip was withering:

“Having had two meetings with the young soldier, [he] demonstrated to all of us that he did not have the slightest intuition for, at a moment like this, and with the unique possibility of negotiation to get his hands on a document of worldwide repercussion... he let himself remain like a puppet of doubt, in the 'loves-me, loves-me-not,' peeling away his own mediocrity.”

Whether the photographs actually existed is unknowable. But the account, if true, suggests visual documentation of the creature was produced inside the ESA and that the military moved swiftly to confiscate it when a soldier tried to sell it to the press.

The Stanton Friedman Connection

The international attention is documented in IPM 05. At the 14th Congress of Ufology in Curitiba, Pacaccini gave a private two-hour presentation in English to Stanton Friedman (the Canadian-American nuclear physicist), Graham Birdsall (editor of UFO Magazine UK), and John Carpenter (a UFO researcher). They “listened attentively and took notes on many details... they turned on their cameras fixed on tripods.”

The personal costs of cooperation with the ufologists were not abstract. IPM 04 preserves Pacaccini's description of a military informant's wife “who desperately implored that her husband give up the idea of giving us any details, because from that point on their lives would be ruined.”

Later, Dr. John Mack, the Harvard psychiatrist and Pulitzer Prize winner, traveled to Varginha with psychologist Dr. Gilda Moura to conduct interviews directly with witnesses. Pacaccini served as interpreter. Mack was already a controversial figure. Harvard Medical School had investigated whether his research into alien abduction experiences met accepted scientific standards, ultimately clearing him after a year of closed-door hearings (1994-1995). According to multiple accounts, he was so impressed by the Varginha witnesses that he reportedly stated he would “resign his academic achievements if these girls were ever proven to be lying.” His biography by Ralph Blumenthal includes a chapter titled “Aliens in Brazil.”

Friedman later characterized the Varginha case as a “cosmic Watergate”, a phrase he also applied to the broader UFO cover-up. Both men are now dead: Mack was struck and killed by a drunk driver in London in September 2004, at age 74, while attending a T.E. Lawrence Society conference. Friedman died of a heart attack at Toronto airport in May 2019, at age 84, returning from a speaking engagement.

The Doctor Who Refused: “This Is Not of This World”

One of the most vivid accounts from IPM 06 describes what allegedly happened after the second creature was captured on the evening of January 20 by Military Police officers in civilian clothes:

”'Doctor, we have this thing in here and you could help us with what to do with it.' He looked at the creature and stepped back, annoyed to learn what it was about, alleging he did not want his name linked to 'that,' because he had a reputation to uphold.”

”'I don't know! I don't know and I don't want to know what to do with this thing. Take it to the Regional, that's the safest bet! I don't want to get involved with this thing, no way, because this is not of this world!'”

This account came through a judicial authority who told the researchers that a Military Police officer had disclosed the story at a barbecue among friends.

The Doctor Who Came Forward: 30 Years Later

The doctor who refused is unnamed in the documents. But in January 2026, nearly thirty years after the incident, a different doctor broke his silence publicly.

Dr. Italo Venturelli, a neurosurgeon who served as Director of Finance for the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at the Regional Hospital, Hospital Bom Pastor, and Hospital Humanitas, testified on camera and at the National Press Club in Washington that he was called to a bedside at the Regional Hospital on the evening of January 20, 1996. He claims he observed a non-human being whose cranium had been sutured by his colleague Dr. Marcos Vinico Neves.

He described a being resembling a seven-year-old child with a teardrop-shaped cranium, large lilac eyes, white skin, three fingers with an opposing thumb, no nipples, and a small mouth. He said he experienced a feeling of “peace” emanating from the being and described what he interpreted as telepathic communication.

Venturelli says a near-fatal heart attack prompted his decision to come forward, not wanting to take his account to the grave. His testimony is notable because it is the first from a named, credentialed medical professional, not an anonymous nurse or secondhand account. Both hospitals he names (Regional and Humanitas) are the same ones described in the IPM documents and remain operational today.

His account has not been independently corroborated by other named medical staff.

The Hospital's Story Falls Apart

The Regional Hospital's denials were challenged on camera. In the second half of May 1996, São Paulo television producer Goulart de Andrade, host of Comando da Madrugada on TV Manchete, traveled to Varginha with his crew to film a documentary. At the Regional Hospital, he interviewed the administrator, Adilson Usier, who denied any involvement of doctors or staff with the creature. Usier then produced a document claiming that all the commotion on the night of January 20 was explained by a simple event: the Fire Department had brought in the body of a prisoner who had committed suicide at the Varginha jail.

IPM 06 records what happened next. Pacaccini and Rodrigues had anticipated this and obtained a copy of the forensic report through a lawyer friend. When Usier finished his explanation, Goulart reached into his pocket:

”'Look, Adilson, I'm very sorry, but either you were completely mistaken or there is another reason, because I have here in my hands the forensic report and that person died on January 30th!'”

The prisoner had died ten days after the date Usier claimed. And the contradiction didn't stop there: Captain Alvarenga of the Fire Department had already stated on the record that the Fire Department had not brought any deceased person to the Regional Hospital on that date. Usier's alibi collapsed from two directions simultaneously, on camera.

The documentary aired on Saturday, June 1, 1996, running two hours and fifteen minutes, time Pacaccini described as “never before used on television dedicated to a single subject of ufological nature.” It was rebroadcast the following week.

Goulart also visited Unicamp, where Dr. Badan Palhares denied any involvement but offered the TV crew a tour of the refrigerated body drawers at the Amarais cemetery morgue. Pacaccini noted the obvious: the creatures had allegedly arrived at Unicamp in January. The documentary was filming in late May. “No creature would still be there, in the refrigerator, waiting for the Comando da Madrugada program to arrive and find it stretched out on the table.” The real question, as the ufologists saw it, was what had happened in the underground laboratories in the days immediately following the creatures' arrival, not what was in a refrigerator five months later.

The Soldier's Death

One of the most controversial aspects of the Varginha case is the death of a young military serviceman who allegedly had contact with one of the captured creatures. IPM 07 contains both Pacaccini's account and actual medical records.

Public records establish the basic facts: Marco Eli Chereze (born October 10, 1972) was a soldier with the 24th Military Police Battalion in Minas Gerais (not the ESA, but the regional MP unit). He was reportedly a P2 (intelligence) officer. He was hospitalized on February 12, 1996 -23 days after the alleged January 20 events, with abdominal pain, and died on February 15, 1996, at age 23. The autopsy was performed by medical examiner Dr. José de Frota Vasconcelos on February 16, with the report issued February 29. The official cause was sepsis from a post-operative hospital infection following removal of a pre-existing cyst under his left armpit.

The family requested a police investigation into possible medical negligence. The police chief, João Pedro da Silva Filho, confirmed this and stated the autopsy report was “of the utmost importance to determine the cause of death.” The family was also reportedly denied an exhumation request.

The Family's Testimony

Pacaccini describes going to the family's home on the outskirts of Varginha. The mother, referred to as “Dona Geralda,” told him:

“On January 20, her son, a P2 [intelligence agent] of the Military Police, had been on a mission. And that on the night of the great rainstorm he had come home to change clothes because he was dirty and very wet. A white car, official, without the markings that characterize it — for it was used only by the P2 — had brought him and waited at the door.”

The father, “Francisco,” revealed an earlier exchange:

“He had spoken with his son precisely about what he thought of the subject of extraterrestrials in the city. He received as a response virtually an order from his son not to discuss it with anyone, because he was certain that it was only the beginning of a great confusion! 'It's going to be a big mess, Dad. You can just wait and see!'”

The grandmother, “Dona Benedita,” recalled:

“When the newscast covered the subject, immediately the grandson got up from the sofa and turned off the set, saying: 'Don't watch this, it's just nonsense.' Thus, in a sudden manner, demonstrating enormous annoyance as if the news affected him directly.”

Days after January 20, the young man fell ill with a strong fever. He lost movement in his legs and arms, was placed in the ICU of the Regional Hospital, and died without any doctor clarifying the cause. The family described “a funeral with a sealed coffin, rushed, and arranging the burial a few hours later.”

The Sister's Account

Cherese's sister, Marta Antonia Tavares, provided the most detailed account of the medical timeline. Her testimony, published in the Jornal dos Lagos in January 1997 and preserved in IPM 07, paints a picture of medical negligence followed by institutional stonewalling.

According to Marta, Cherese began showing symptoms of pain under his right arm on February 6. On February 7, at the barracks, the PM's medical lieutenant, Robson Ferreira de Melo, performed an incision to remove a cyst from his right armpit. Marta's description of the procedure was damning: the doctor opened the area “without performing antisepsis and without removing the hair.”

Three days later, Cherese began experiencing back pain. He went to the emergency room, was given Voltaren. His condition deteriorated rapidly. By Wednesday he was in severe pain. The doctor told Marta her brother had an infection but “didn't yet know where the source was. Everything indicated it was from the surgery he had.” Cherese was admitted to the Regional Hospital of Southern Minas for round-the-clock intravenous treatment.

When Marta next saw him, “he was only moaning with pain, he was completely stained purple and the doctor did not allow the family to get close.” In the brief interval when Marta stepped out and another family member went to buy the antibiotic Vancocin that the doctor had requested, Marco Eli died. The doctor recommended burial on the same day, February 15.

The official autopsy, performed on February 16 by Dr. José de Frota Vasconcelos, gave the formal cause of death as septic pulmonary thromboembolism, incipient myocarditis, and acute hepatic congestion. But the autopsy report itself was not issued until May 29, 1996, more than three months later, despite having been requested on an urgent basis.

A supplementary examination had been recommended by Dr. Janine, requiring R$653. Marta went to the barracks to request funding: “They gave me the runaround, told me to wait because the government hadn't released the money.” The supplementary exam was never performed. The autopsy report was never provided to the family. And Marta's assessment of the report's reliability: “My opinion is that this report is no longer of use, because it may have been altered.”

The Medical Records

The IPM includes laboratory results for Marco Eli Cherese (Exam No. 0120407), performed by Dr. José da Frota Vasconcelos at the Institute of Legal Medicine in Varginha. The full lab findings show an HIV test (non-reactive), a direct bacterioscopy from the autopsy (inconclusive), and a culture from a serous effusion at the axillary lesion site. The culture identified Staphylococcus schleiferi, a species primarily associated with infections in dogs and cats. It is rarely found in human clinical samples. In the medical literature, S. schleiferi is classified as a coagulase-variable organism that can cause aggressive wound infections in immunocompromised patients, but its presence in a fatal human infection of a previously healthy 23-year-old is unusual enough to merit attention.

Pacaccini raised pointed questions:

“Was his brutal and unexplained cause of death due to contamination from the creature? Was this the reason they rushed the burial? ...In one of the laboratory reports, yes, there is mention of a 'small toxic quantity' in the body of the military serviceman.”

Chereze's former companion, Eric Lopes, appeared in the 2022 documentary Moment of Contact, credited as “Chereze's Companion,” suggesting that at least one person close to the soldier was willing to speak publicly, decades later.

At the January 2026 National Press Club event in Washington, a pathologist presented findings about an unusual bacterium of “extremely high aggressiveness and lethality” found in Chereze's tissue samples, a detail that aligns with the “small toxic quantity” described in the IPM. Whether this represents a genuinely anomalous pathogen or a mischaracterization of the Staphylococcus infection documented in the IPM remains a matter of interpretation.

The tension at the heart of the Chereze case: the official record says he died of a routine post-operative infection from a pre-existing condition. His family's testimony in the documents tells a completely different story. A man who came home wet and dirty from a mission on January 20, who warned his father it was “going to be a big mess,” and whose death was followed by a sealed coffin and rushed burial.

Pacaccini drew a connection to animal deaths at the local zoo, a connection that began with another sighting.

The Creature at the Zoo

On the evening of April 21, 1996, roughly three months after the main events, 67-year-old Terezinha Gallo Clepf was attending a birthday party at a restaurant called Paiquere, located inside the grounds of the Varginha Zoo. Her husband, Marcos Clepf, was a former city councilman and well-known figure in Varginha. According to the chronology in IPM 04:

“Dona Terezinha Gallo Clepf, 67, wife of Mr. Marcos Clepf, former city councilman, went out to the veranda to smoke a cigarette. The place was totally dark. When she looked to the left side, at 4 meters distance, she saw a being exactly like the one described by the young women and by the military, except this one had on its head a kind of yellow helmet. Dona Terezinha said she had the impression that the enormous red eyes of the being emitted a type of luminescence, which allowed her to see its face very well.”

IPM 06 contains Pacaccini's full account of the encounter, based on his interview with Dona Terezinha at her home. She had gone to the veranda to smoke because her husband and the other men at the table were non-smokers and she didn't want to bother them. The veranda was darker than usual: the external floodlights were malfunctioning, and large trees blocked much of the ambient light from the restaurant.

She sat in a chair, lit her cigarette, and found standing before her, at a distance of five meters, a creature leaning against the outside of the veranda's metallic fence railing. She described momentary terror, initially thinking it was a loose animal, though she had “never seen anything similar.” Its two large, red, wide-open eyes were without pupils and luminescent, staring fixedly at her. The nose was “almost nonexistent.” The mouth resembled “a small horizontal slit.” The skin was dark brown and oily. On its head there was what appeared to be a golden helmet or cap.

“Dona Terezinha says the eyes resembled 'rear car brake lights.'”

For approximately seven minutes, the two stared at each other in silence. The creature did not move, though it opened and closed its eyes intermittently while continuing to watch her. Finally, overcome with fear, she rose slowly from the chair and backed toward the restaurant door. At the threshold, she turned and looked once more: the creature was still there, inert, in the same position, still staring fixedly at her.

A newspaper clipping preserved in IPM 03 captured her own words:

“I was frozen to the ground, I couldn't look away from those horrible, bulging, red eyes. It is the ugliest thing I have ever seen in my life.”

Frightened, she went inside and joined the others, but said nothing for fear of causing panic or becoming “the victim of a joke from some witty person there present.” She sought her husband and insisted they leave immediately. Only in the car, showing visible nervousness, did she tell him what she had seen. That night she could not sleep. “The image of that creature tormented her, persisting in her memory.”

According to IPM 04: “Even today, Dona Terezinha becomes distressed when she thinks about what she saw.”

The family deliberated for a week before going public. As Pacaccini recounts in IPM 06, Marcos Clepf called them on April 26 to say they had decided “by mutual agreement among family members” to share what happened, despite being “fearful that he and his family would be ridiculed.”

The Zoo Animal Deaths

The Clepf sighting was not the first sign that something was wrong at the zoo. IPM 06 reveals that the animal deaths actually occurred in the week before Dona Terezinha's April 21 encounter, not after it. Dr. Leila Cabral, the zoo director, contacted the ufologists after the Clepf testimony was publicized, reporting that “one week before the 21st, that is, in the week before Dona Terezinha had the sighting, five previously healthy animals came to die in an inexplicable and mysterious manner.” The chronology in BRANBSBARX003_007 names them specifically:

“Two deer, one tapir, one blue macaw, and one ocelot. The biologist and director of the local zoo, Dr. Leila Cabral, had never seen anything like it. Dr. Marcos, the veterinarian, sent the viscera to Belo Horizonte for examination. Only in one of the deer was a type of caustic intoxication found. In the other animals nothing was found. It is not known what they died of.”

The zoo's own staff were divided. The veterinarian, Dr. Marcos A. Carvalho Mina, considered the deaths a coincidence. But the zoo director, Dr. Leila Cabral, believed they were connected to the presence of the creature.

IPM 06 contains the individual autopsy findings. The tapir, which Dr. Leila had affectionately nicknamed “Banzeco” for being healthy and playful, died from an “unidentified toxic substance.” The deer died from “caustic intoxication without apparent cause.” The remaining three animals (the blue macaw, the jaguarundi, and one additional animal) showed “nothing that would justify the death.” All died abruptly and unexpectedly. The zoo's water was treated, the food was carefully selected, and as Pacaccini noted: “Had there been a toxic product, it would have been detected in the examinations of the animals' viscera. However, when 'unknown toxic substance' appeared and in the other animals 'no definition,' something inexplicable had really happened.”

Pacaccini, drawing the link to Marco Eli Cherese's death, wrote in IPM 07:

“Also five healthy animals from the Zoo had sudden deaths, with the autopsy performed by veterinarian Dr. Marcos Mirna revealing that in one of the animals there was an 'unknown toxic substance' and, in the other four, 'no definition.' Strange! Very strange!”

There is also a revealing anecdote about Dr. Leila. Back in January 1996, when rumors of a creature capture were circulating through the city, she had encountered a firefighter and joked with him: “You captured the ET and I'm going to take care of it.” According to the account in BRANBSBARX003_007, the firefighter, rather than laughing it off, “alarmed, told her to be quiet and not to discuss this with anyone.”

The animal deaths themselves have been independently confirmed by the zoo's own staff — both Dr. Cabral and Dr. Mina have spoken to journalists outside the ufological community. Necropsies revealed blackening of the stomach and intestinal mucous membrane in the affected animals. The tissue samples sent to the laboratory in Belo Horizonte, however, have never been fully released to the public. The caustic intoxication found in one deer was never explained, and no cause of death was ever determined for the other four animals. The military inquiry does not address these claims.

Bribery, Threats, and Witness Intimidation

The Men in Suits

On the evening of April 29, 1996, four men, two young and two older, “dressed in black suits and ties,” appeared at the home of Liliane and Valquíria's mother. Pacaccini's account in IPM 06 is detailed:

“In a major bribery attempt, they offered them enough money to fulfill their dreams, in exchange for a recording of a video where Liliane and Valquíria would say that they had not seen any strange creature and that everything was just a prank.”

The mother, Dona Luísa, described the escalation:

”'They showed a paper with lots of money inside. Not just coins, but bills of many types.' ...They said that if she was afraid to take all that money, she should give them a document so they could open a savings account for her.”

The men never identified themselves and said they would return for her answer.

The Casseta & Planeta Affair

The Brazilian comedy show Casseta & Planeta tried to get the girls to appear on-air. The ufologists advised against it and hid the girls at a farmhouse. The TV crew offered money too. Signs went up around the city: “The Prefecture welcomes the Casseta & Planeta team to this cosmic city” and “The ET of Varginha opens its arms for tourism.”

Death Threats

The researchers also received anonymous death threats:

“Someone called us with a male voice, threatening us with death, alleging we were going too far and that the time to stop everything had come. If we continued, we would bear the consequences.”

Surveillance and Wiretapping

A Nossa Folha newspaper interview preserved in IPM 04 reveals that Pacaccini that he had been “forced to change telephones three times, because they were constantly 'tapped.'” He added that at the ESA, “still today, whoever ventures to mention our names gets even prison time.”

More significantly, IPM 04 reveals that the military was actively monitoring the ufologists' public appearances. A classified military communication (Official Letter No. 002/TG, marked “CLASSIFIED”) from the Tiro de Guerra (War Training Unit) in São Lourenço, MG, reported to the ESA's intelligence section (2nd Section) that ufologists Ubirajara Rodrigues and Vitório Pacaccini had given a lecture at the Hotel Primus, where they stated that creatures were captured and taken by ESA personnel to a military unit in Campinas. The letter was forwarded to the IPM file. The significance: local military intelligence units across Minas Gerais were functioning as a surveillance network, monitoring civilian lectures and filing reports back to the ESA command about what the ufologists were saying publicly.

Armed Researchers

The threats were taken seriously enough that Pacaccini and Rodrigues began carrying weapons during nighttime investigations. On one vigil near the ESA, they brought “a .38 revolver that Ubirajara had inherited from his father and my semi-automatic 9mm Beretta” and spent from 8:30 PM until 3:00 AM on a hilltop overlooking the area where a hairy creature had reportedly been seen.

The Creatures in the Tank

One of the most extraordinary claims from IPM 06 comes secondhand through a domestic worker. A young woman employed by a military family in Três Corações accidentally saw something while cleaning:

“While doing her normal cleaning work, she saw the military employer meeting in the living room with two or three other military friends. While doing the work in the rooms, out of curiosity she peeked through a crack in the door at what they were watching on television. It was a video showing [unclear]... one creature was eating a fruit. The other, lying in another tank with water, appeared dead because it was not moving.”

Her mother advised her: “She ran the risk of being dismissed for snooping into the lives of others.”

The Signed Denials

According to Pacaccini's informants in IPM 06, military personnel who participated in or witnessed the operation were required to sign documents:

“All those named had to sign their respective pages, together with a fabricated witness, with the sole purpose that when and if — some or all — should they leave the military for any reason and decide to tell what they knew, the Army would have a way to prove their statements were lies by bringing to the public the signed document.”

This is described as a deliberate counter-intelligence measure: preemptive written denials to discredit any future whistle-blower.

The Hairy Creature on the Road

In IPM 06, Biology student Ildo Lúcio Gardino (21 years old) reported a separate sighting to the director of the Varginha Zoo. While driving a van from Três Corações to Varginha at night:

”'A few kilometers from arrival, where the road has a sharp curve and then a long straight uphill stretch, there, right after this curve I saw a creature trying to cross the road heading toward the woods on the other side. This creature was standing, slightly hunched over... dark brown thing, with hair all over its body, reddish and large eyes reflected by the car's light, and in an intelligent and protective gesture, it raised its hands to its face and crouched down.'”

When Pacaccini asked if it could have been a calf: “A two-legged calf? And hairy? With big bulging red eyes? What are you talking about?” When the researchers traced a straight line from the sighting location, it pointed directly to the house of Eurico and Oralina, the couple who had seen the UFO on the morning of January 20.

The Wave Continues: April-May 1996

IPM 06 documents sightings in the weeks following the main events that paint a picture of sustained anomalous activity across southern Minas Gerais.

The Standard Factory Mass Sighting

In late April 1996, at 11:00 AM on a clear blue autumn day without a single cloud, an incident occurred at the Standard factory, a multinational recently established in Varginha. More than forty people, including factory workers, administrative staff, and executives, left their workstations and went to the courtyard to watch:

“A disc-shaped object, silvery, at approximately two hundred meters in altitude, coming from the horizon, hovered above the factory. At the same time, another identical object came from another direction, hovering below the first. They slowly rotated and, as if in a coupling, departed at high speed vanishing from sight.”

Forty witnesses spanning multiple organizational levels, in broad daylight, at close range. The ufologists documented this but it received little media attention compared to the creature sightings.

The Dentist on the Dark Road

A dentist from Três Corações, requesting anonymity “for fear of being the target of jokes,” reported a disturbing encounter on a rural road. Pacaccini says he had known the man since childhood and vouched for his character. The dentist was driving home around 8:00 PM on a shortcut through an eight-kilometer rural road when his new car began to malfunction:

“Suddenly he spotted on his left side part of an enormous object with some curvatures, flying just above him with the other part covering the road with frightening proximity, making him fear a contact that would certainly cause a disaster. There were some edges where various yellow and red lights blinked, projecting complete luminosity to the object.”

His hands froze on the steering wheel. The engine died. He pulled to the shoulder and sat motionless, eyes closed in terror, until the object moved away and the engine spontaneously restarted. He drove to his destination at the highest speed of his life.

The dentist later testified at the May 4 ufologists' meeting, but only on condition that his face and voice were electronically distorted.

The Zoo Veterinarian's Observation

IPM 06 also preserves a detail from the zoo veterinarian, Dr. Marcos Carvalho Mirna, that directly contradicts the military's timeline. While discussing the animal deaths at the zoo, Dr. Marcos recalled that he had seen Army trucks on the road on January 22 (a Monday), while driving to pick up his daughter at the Country Club of Varginha. The military's consistent position has been that trucks only traveled to Varginha on January 25-26 for routine maintenance at AUTOMACO. The veterinarian's observation places military convoys on the road three days earlier than the Army admits.

The Ruling: “Too Implausible to Be Criminal”

The Military Police Inquiry concluded in mid-1997 with a recommendation from the Military Public Ministry (IPM 08) (prosecutor's office) to archive the case, meaning no charges would be brought.

The prosecutor's reasoning is notable not for what it proves, but for how it characterizes the claims:

“Although in my opinion their behavior was reprehensible from a moral standpoint... I do not perceive, given the nature of the subject and the naivety of the statements, any intent to commit a crime against the reputation of the Armed Forces.”

“The assertions were always conjectural and generic, not being capable of inspiring public credibility and much less of undermining the solid reputation of the Military Institutions.”

The judge agreed, with a memorable flourish:

“The story is so implausible that it served as a theme for the program 'Casseta e Planeta.'”

The decision became final on July 15, 1997 (IPM 09), when no appeal was filed within the legal deadline. The case files were routed through the Court of the 4th Military Judicial District in Juiz de Fora, to the Inspector Court of Military Justice, and finally to the archive of the Superior Military Tribunal in Brasília. The substitute Judge-Auditor who handled the case was Dr. Telma Queiroz; the final archiving was ordered by Dr. Zilah Maria Callado Fadul Petersen, serving as substitute Inspector of Military Justice.

What the Army Told Congress

In 2010, Federal Deputy Chico Alencar (PSOL-RJ) submitted an information request to the Ministry of Defense (Resposta ao RIC 4470/2009) asking nine specific questions about UFO-related documentation. The responses from each branch of the Armed Forces are revealing.

The Air Force confirmed it had transferred all UFO-related materials from the 1950s through 1980s to the National Archives, with 1990s material still being processed. It also acknowledged COMDABRA's role and the existence of specific directives for handling sighting reports.

The Navy issued a terse certificate:

“I CERTIFY that, in the records of the Brazilian Navy, there is nothing on file related to what was requested.”

The Army confirmed it had produced exactly two documents about the Varginha case:

“An investigation opened on May 10, 1996, by the Commander of the Army Sergeants School (EsSA) to ascertain facts regarding news reports published in the press about the participation of military personnel from that School in the apprehension of the 'Varginha ET'; and a Military Police Inquiry (IPM) opened on January 29, 1997.”

Two documents. For what became one of the most publicized UFO cases in Brazilian history, involving allegations of military capture operations, hospital transfers, autopsies, and a soldier's death. The Army says it produced two documents.

Military Pilots and Their Sightings

The BRANBSB collection includes multiple sighting reports from military pilots, not easily dismissed as unreliable observers. One stands out:

Commander Beni and Commander Pavel reported a pulsating light varying between red and white, traveling at approximately 200 knots, observed for 15-20 minutes under CAVOK conditions (clear skies, visibility over 10 kilometers). Beni noted this was the most significant sighting of his career.

Another report from CINDACTA III documented multiple fireballs in formation: “One large and two small... with the larger one in front and the small ones right behind,” accompanied by “a tail of fire,” observed by a Military Police Major and corroborated by a commercial flight (TBA397 en route from Brasília to Recife) that reported seeing something similar.

A questionnaire from a pilot reported disc-shaped objects “2 times larger than the aircraft” at approximately 31,000 feet with “monstrous acceleration.” Another observer described an oval object that “alternates colors” between silver, red, and blue, moving in a “zigzag” trajectory.

Regional air commands (CINDACTA I, II, III) consistently noted in their forwarding correspondence that no radar tracks correlated with the reported objects, though at least one incident contradicted this, as described below.

The Academic Response: UFO Over the Prison

A detailed 1991-92 case study from the University of Brasília's Ufological Studies Group (GEU-NEFP/CEAM/UnB), preserved in the BRANBSB collection, analyzes a sighting near the Papuda maximum-security prison where approximately 25 police officers, led by Lt. Damasceno, observed a color-changing oval object for over 3.5 hours on April 11, 1991.

The prison setting is described precisely: 15 km southeast of Brasília, housing over 1,100 prisoners across multiple facilities, with a guard force of more than 60 men. “It is a location isolated from the urban environment. Most of its area has no lighting.”

The study documents four telephone contacts between Lt. Damasceno and CINDACTA I's Sergeant Petronio. CINDACTA confirmed radar registration of the object at approximately 2,000 feet. Yet after several contacts, they concluded with “the easiest route”: “'Look, Lieutenant, that was a balloon.'”

The researchers then systematically deconstructed this explanation:

• Sunset for Brasília was at 6:06 PM. The last observation occurred at 10:40 PM, 4 hours 34 minutes after sunset. Solar reflection on any object was physically impossible.
• The weather balloon was launched at 9:00 PM, but the object had been observed since 7:10 PM, nearly two hours before the balloon existed.
• CINDACTA's own Sergeant Petronio admitted during the third phone contact that “the balloon sent by the CMA had already reached its maximum altitude and burst.”
• The object disappeared and reappeared three times in different positions. Weather balloons do not do this.
• 72 hours later, the object reappeared with the same characteristics. At that point, nothing was reported to CINDACTA “due to the previous indifference.”

The study also revealed a contradiction between Air Force agencies: CECOMSAER (social communications) confirmed radar registration while NUCOMDABRA (aerospace defense) denied it. The researchers estimated the object's actual diameter at approximately 20.5 meters.

In 1996, the GEU wrote directly to COMDABRA demanding answers about the Varginha case and the May 1986 incident.

The May 1986 Incident

While not directly related to Varginha, the documents contain extensive material about the famous May 19, 1986 Brazilian UFO incident, one of the best-documented military UFO encounters in history.

A detailed article by Claudeir Covo in the BRANBSB collection compiles official testimony from Brigadier Otávio Júlio Moreira Lima (Minister of the Air Force), Colonel Ozires Silva (president of Petrobrás and a pilot who personally chased the objects), F-5E and Mirage fighter pilots, and radar operators documenting 20+ objects detected on radar at speeds of 250-1,500 km/h.

Brigadier Cherubim Rosa Filho, minister of the Superior Military Tribunal, is quoted in an ISTOE magazine article entered as evidence in IPM 03: “There exist today unexplained cases by the Aeronautics regarding UFOs.”

The Chronology According to the Ufologists

Claudeir Covo's timeline, published in Planeta magazine and entered as evidence in IPM 04, gives the fullest picture of what the ufologists believe happened:

This timeline remains unverified. The military denies all of it.

The Storm

One entry in the chronology deserves its own discussion: the hailstorm.

At approximately 5:00 PM on January 20, roughly ninety minutes after the girls' sighting, a hailstorm hit Varginha with a severity the city hadn't seen in a quarter century. January is the peak of the rainy season in southern Minas Gerais, but this was something else entirely. Pacaccini described it in IPM 05:

“A torrential storm with hailstones the size of ping-pong balls destroying houses, knocking down trees, roofs, flooding streets and, with such violence, that had not been seen in the city for a long time.”

The ufologists' chronology in IPM 04 is more precise: “In the last 25 years, Varginha had not seen such rain.” A military witness in IPM 02 confirmed it was “a strong storm that darkened the entire city.”

The storm matters to the case for three separate reasons.

First, the military cited it to explain the girls' sighting. Lt. Col. Vanderlei's defense in IPM 07 attributed the encounter to “a confusion resulting from the situation of rain, windstorm and lightning, in a poorly illuminated location.” The prosecutor in IPM 08 described it as a sighting “on a stormy night.” But the girls saw the creature at 3:30 PM, in full southern-hemisphere summer daylight, on a vacant lot in their own neighborhood. The storm didn't arrive for another ninety minutes. By the time it hit, the girls were already home, already terrified, already telling their mother what they'd seen. The timeline is in the military's own documents.

Second, the storm gave the military a reason to be everywhere. The chronology in BRANBSBARX003_007 is explicit about this: “After the rain, the Fire Department, the Military Police, and the Army had good excuses to search the entire region. For the public, they would be helping the population regarding the damage caused by the storm. In reality, the military knew that there were more beings in the region.” When the fire department's Captain Alvarenga was confronted by Rodrigues, he showed an incident report listing responses to storm damage at various points around the city, around 5:30 PM. The storm was the alibi for every official vehicle seen in the streets that evening. Yet only nine occurrences were logged for a day that produced the worst storm in twenty-five years, with houses unroofed and walls knocked down. Nine.

Third, the ufologists believed the storm injured the creatures. IPM 04 speculates that beings still hiding in the small forest of Jardim Andere “were certainly hit by the hailstones and, in a way, were injured.” The creature captured by Military Police at 8:00 PM that evening was described as “apparently dazed, sick, or injured.” Whether the hail caused this, or whether the creature was already weakened from other causes, or whether the entire account is fabricated, the documents don't say. But the ufologists saw a direct line: a healthy creature seen at 3:30 PM, a catastrophic hailstorm at 5:00, and a weakened creature captured at 8:00.

Major Siqueira of the Military Police, asked about January 20, said only that “on that day the PM's work was normal, he only remembers a storm and some disruptions caused by heavy rain.” The worst storm in twenty-five years, and he remembers it as disruptions.

The Damaged Craft

The very first event in the chronology takes place twelve hours before the girls' sighting. At 1:30 AM on January 20, on a farm 10 kilometers from the center of Varginha, something woke the cattle. IPM 04 describes what happened next:

“The couple Eurico Rodrigues de Freitas, 40, and Oralina Augusta de Freitas, 37, are awakened by the noise of frightened cattle running back and forth. Upon opening the window, they saw a small craft, the size of a minibus, in the shape of a submarine, that slowly flew over the region for 40 minutes at 5 meters from the ground. The craft was dark and had at one of its ends a structure that appeared damaged, releasing a lot of smoke.”

The craft continued slowly in the direction of Jardim Andere, the neighborhood where the creatures would later be seen. The ufologists concluded that an explosion had damaged the craft, scattering debris across the area, and that the vessel eventually came down near Jardim Andere, “probably injuring part of the crew, which took refuge in the small forest of said neighborhood.”

This interpretation gained support from a civilian witness. IPM 07 contains the full account of Carlos de Souza, an ultralight pilot who was heading to Varginha along the Fernão Dias highway for a flight competition. He heard a loud noise “like a tractor motor or a washing machine with a dull sound” coming from the direction of Varginha. He pulled over and entered a side road just past the Varginha access point, where he found an Opala sedan, an ambulance, and three civilian cars already at the scene.

The ground was covered with fragments:

“They were scattered all over the field as if they were made of paper.”

He picked up a piece. It was light and metallic, and when he crushed it, it returned to its original shape. Immediately, according to his account, a tall man in dark gray pants and a light brown shirt with a cap took the object from his hands and threatened him: “Give me that. Get out of here. You didn't see anything.”

In the bed of one of the trucks, Souza saw a large piece of metal. The ufologists noted some of his claims matched their other intelligence, but remained cautious: Claudeir Covo acknowledged that “some points match other information we have, but others are totally divergent.”

According to a military informant, one of the three trucks in the January 23 convoy to Campinas carried “thousands of small unknown metallic fragments” of unknown origin. The fragments were reportedly sent to the Aeronautics Technology Center (CTA) in São José dos Campos, where they were said to be “analyzed by Brazilian and North American military personnel inside another secret underground laboratory.” The ufologists' conclusion: three trucks left the ESA that morning. One carried a dead creature. The second carried another dead creature. The third carried the fragments of the craft that Eurico and Oralina had seen limping over their farm.

(NORAD later confirmed a satellite reentry over the region around January 20, 1996, a detail discussed below in “The NORAD Data,” which could account for what the couple saw in the sky. It would not explain the metallic fragments or what was found on the ground.)

The Sweep

Five hours before the girls' encounter and seven hours before the hailstorm, the military was already in the area. At 2:00 PM on January 20, a civilian witness with former military service observed a disturbing scene along the same train tracks where the firefighters had captured the first creature that morning. From IPM 04:

“A civilian witness, who was formerly in the military, observed at the location at least seven Army soldiers with typical camouflage-type uniforms, armed with FAL rifles. They were coming on foot along the train tracks and surroundings, conducting a type of sweep in the region, when they entered the small forest where, in the morning, the first being had been captured by the firefighters.”

Then, three shots:

“At a certain moment, this witness heard three FAL rifle shots, which have a well-known metallic sound. A military person from Campinas said that a creature was assisting another one lying on the ground, apparently wounded. Perhaps this creature showed signs of reaction against the military and ended up being hit in the chest by the three shots.”

What happened next is the detail that stayed with the witness:

“Some minutes after the three shots, the military personnel emerged from the woods with two typical bags used by the Army. One of them contained 'something' that was moving a lot, while in the other there was 'something' motionless.”

The ufologists' count at this point in the day: the firefighters captured one creature in the morning. The army sweep produced two more in bags, one apparently alive, one dead. One of the creatures in the forest was described as “different from the others, with its entire body covered in black hair,” a detail that would resurface weeks later when biology student Ildo Lúcio Gardino reported seeing a hairy creature trying to cross a road outside Varginha.

“Cairo”: The Witness on the Hill

IPM 06 contains the full testimony of the sweep's civilian witness, referred to by the pseudonym “Cairo.” He was a resident of the Santana neighborhood, situated just below Jardim Andere, and had waited months before coming forward, wanting to verify “the seriousness with which we worked” and confirm that neither researcher had ever leaked a source's identity to the press.

Cairo's account is specific. At approximately 1:00 PM on January 20, returning home for lunch, he parked his car and noticed from his front door an Army truck parked at the crest of the hill marking the upper edge of Jardim Andere. Curious, he walked toward it. By the time he arrived, the truck was gone, but he could see seven soldiers heading downhill toward the tree line near the railroad tracks:

“He spotted seven soldiers down below, heading toward the forest, whose total number caught his attention by the way they walked: somewhat spaced apart from each other but all aligned as if forming a sweep barrier walking toward the forest existing near the railroad tracks. They were wearing combat fatigues, the camouflaged ones, and carrying rifles.”

He positioned himself to watch, joined by other curious bystanders. The soldiers entered the forest. Then came the shots:

“Moments later, he heard three bangs. It was not long before two soldiers came out of the forest each carrying a campaign sack. By the volume of the sacks the contents were evident. One of the sacks gave the clear impression that something in there was trapped and moving. In the other sack, just an inert volume.”

IPM 06 also reveals the explanation for why one of the creatures was shot. Information gathered through Claudeir Covo, the Mondini brothers, and Edson Boaventura established that a creature was killed not because it attacked a soldier, but because the soldier panicked:

“One of the creatures had been shot not for having attacked the soldier, but due to his fright at being face to face with something horrifying by 'our standard of beauty' and from inexperience, nervousness and the worst, being uninformed by his superiors about the importance of what he was doing there, even more considering that a creature had been captured in the morning.”

The implication is damning: the ordinary soldiers conducting the sweep had not been told what they were actually looking for.

The chronology in the documents also records that at least one of the captured creatures was kept at the ESA for 24 hours before being “placed in a cage and, by helicopter, departed for Brasília. From there, it would have gone to the United States in a jet.” The documents note: “This account also remains unconfirmed.”

The Portable Radar and the Americans

Three days after the captures, the operation apparently escalated from local to national to international. On January 23, according to IPM 04:

“A Buffalo aircraft departs from the Canoas Air Base (RS). Inside it were three containers, a box, and several military personnel. In the first container there were generators, in the second the reception equipment and computers, and in the third a small portable workshop. In the box there was a disassembled antenna. In other words, a sophisticated portable radar.”

The aircraft headed for southern Minas Gerais. The radar was installed somewhere near Varginha. During this period, the documents claim, “there were many alien craft flying over the region.” ESA personnel reportedly told the ufologists that “one night they were worried about the possibility of retaliation by extraterrestrial beings.”

The ESA itself was transformed. “Several military personnel from the US Air Force and Army arrived at the ESA by helicopter. An area of the ESA was restricted. Intelligence Service (S2) agents from various parts of the country were sent to the ESA.” Local residents who had lived near the base for years “had never seen such activity at the Sergeants School.” And the soldiers who participated in the operation paid a lasting price: they “are still today being watched and followed by S2.”

Three days after that, on January 26: “Several military personnel who work within NASA arrive at Unicamp, claiming they were going to select Brazilian scientists to participate in future space missions with the North Americans.” The ufologists were skeptical of this cover story: “They are probably military personnel who deeply understand all the details about flying saucers and extraterrestrial beings.”

Tracking the Trail to Campinas

While the ufologists in Varginha gathered testimony, a separate team was tracing the alleged route to Campinas. IPM 06 contains a detailed investigation report from CEPEX (a São Paulo-based research group led by the Mondini brothers, Eduardo and Osvaldo), presented minute-by-minute in field-report format. It reads like an intelligence operation conducted by civilians with no authority and considerable nerve.

On May 20, 1996, Eduardo Mondini, Carlos, and Marco Antonio drove from CEPEX headquarters in Sumaré-SP to Campinas with a specific mission: photograph, film, and find any trace of the creatures' alleged passage through the military infrastructure. They drove directly into the 11th Armored Infantry Brigade compound via the Via Anhanguera entrance, passing through the 2nd Logistics Battalion, the 28th Armored Infantry Battalion, the 2nd Army Police Platoon, the Brigade Headquarters, and the 2nd Armored Communications Company, filming with a camera hidden in their moving car. “Throughout the entire barracks there are guard posts with armed soldiers guarding the entrance to each Company.”

At the Amarais Cemetery, they photographed the Medical Legal Institute from outside, posing as cemetery visitors. They noticed a single employee watching them suspiciously from a distance.

Then they drove to Viracopos International Airport to check for military aircraft. What they found instead was unusual:

“We noticed another ANTONOV parked at the Federal Express terminal and it did not have commercial airline paint, but bore, besides the Russian flag, the Russian government emblem on the tail, which means the aircraft belonged to the Russian government.”

An airport employee told them the aircraft had arrived on May 15 and was sitting empty, “awaiting cargo” for a flight to the United States. The investigators found it “very strange that an aircraft of that size would literally be parked awaiting cargo and wasting time and money.”

At the 2nd Combat Artillery Group in Jundiaí, they spoke with guard corporal “Everton,” who confirmed the arrival of vehicles from the Campinas barracks but said visits required scheduling through public relations. When pressed about the Campinas connection, the corporal said the barracks “had no link” to Campinas, which the investigators noted was contradicted by the existence of vehicle maintenance facilities at the 2nd Logistics Battalion in Campinas.

The most significant intelligence came through human sources. A contact called “Rubens” had entered the 2nd GAC barracks on a pretext of getting water. Through his mother's friend, married to a captain at the barracks, he learned that the captain had been “incommunicado for 15 days” at an undisclosed location in Bragança Paulista. “His wife tried to speak with him several times and was unsuccessful. When she asked him about the Varginha ET, he changed the subject.”

On June 21, the CEPEX team met a source called “Santiago” at the home of “Miriam” in Campinas. Santiago reported that a friend on Badan Palhares' team had told him the creature's body was at the Hospital das Clínicas at Unicamp. His claims were specific:

• The military chose Campinas because the trip from Três Corações was short enough that “the body would not be exposed to travel conditions for too long.”
• Unicamp had an underground laboratory built in the 1970s for military purposes, beneath the Hospital das Clínicas, accessible only by magnetic card and fingerprint.
• Badan Palhares was studying the creature's body with a German specialist at the university.
• The Araguaia bones (remains of political prisoners killed during the military dictatorship, which had been at the hospital since 1991) were used as a cover story to justify the presence of military vehicles at the HC and IML.
• One of the military men involved in the capture operation was “missing and it is believed he is dead.”
• All military personnel involved were being transferred to other units.

Through a separate source, a physician reported giving a ride to a soldier near the 11th Armored Infantry Brigade. When he asked the soldier about the ET, the soldier confirmed the story and said he had personally “seen on top of one of his officers' desks a document talking about the ET.”

None of these claims have been independently verified. But the CEPEX report is notable for its operational specificity: real locations, real unit designations, timestamp-by-timestamp movement records. It documents a group of civilians physically penetrating military installations and gathering intelligence from inside the apparatus that was allegedly concealing the creatures.

The timing of what followed struck the ufologists as more than coincidence. On March 1, U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher signed a “Cooperation for the Peaceful Use of Outer Space” agreement with Brazil's Foreign Minister. The very next day, NASA administrator Daniel Goldin visited the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) and signed space cooperation agreements. It was the first time a NASA director had personally visited the country to inspect the “national scientific apparatus.” As IPM 04 notes: “People who are following the Varginha Case, both civilians and military, believe that the presence of Daniel Goldin and Warren Christopher in Brazil involves agreements regarding the beings captured in Varginha.”

A Note on Badan Palhares

The chronology names Dr. Fortunato Badan Palhares as the forensic examiner who received the creatures at Unicamp. This is a significant claim, because Badan Palhares is one of the most famous forensic pathologists in Brazilian history: the man who identified Josef Mengele's skeletal remains in 1985, who coordinated identification of over 1,000 bodies from a mass grave linked to the military dictatorship, and who was involved in the controversial PC Farias death investigation in June 1996 (the same year as the Varginha events).

His Department of Legal Medicine at Unicamp unquestionably had the forensic capabilities described in the allegations. The distance from Três Corações to Campinas is approximately 350 km, roughly 4-5 hours by road, making the “4:00 AM convoy” timeline plausible. And his career demonstrates he was exactly the kind of specialist the Brazilian establishment turned to for sensitive forensic work.

However, between the allegations and the denials, there is a striking quote. A passage from the Nossa Folha newspaper of São Lourenço (January 16-23, 1997), preserved in IPM 04, describes what happened when Badan Palhares was asked about the Varginha case during a lecture to medical students in Rio de Janeiro:

“With an undisguisable transformation in his expression, he justified: 'If this question is put to me in about five years, perhaps I can say something...'“

Five years. Not “I have nothing to say” or “This is nonsense.” A specific timeframe, as if describing the expiration of a secrecy obligation.

The same interview contains an even more explosive claim from Pacaccini about why the creatures remained in Brazil:

”'What is happening is that the military did not give in to pressures from the American government for the removal of the bodies of the extraterrestrials from Brazilian soil, and they are doing a joint research effort, including studying the craft that was found at the site.'”

According to Pacaccini, this was why American personnel were at Unicamp: not because the US had taken custody of the bodies, but because Brazil had refused to hand them over and insisted on a joint operation.

When researcher Aurimas Svitojus finally contacted Badan Palhares directly in August 2012, the response was categorical: “I DID NOT AND NEVER WAS CALLED TO DO ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING WITH THIS MATTER.” He added: “I am a scientist and I do not need to hide such facts if they exist. I am not connected to any intelligence or defense agencies... Nothing would stop me to say something if I was really involved.”

Critically, no ufologist had ever actually contacted him before publishing claims about his involvement, a significant gap in the investigation. Whether his denial is the final word, or whether the “five years” has simply become thirty, each reader will have to judge for themselves.

The General's Denial

On May 8, 1996, nearly four months after the alleged captures, Brigadier General Sergio Pedro Coelho Lima, Commander of the ESA, finally addressed the press. IPM 06 contains Pacaccini's full account of the event.

The press conference had been announced formally to media across southern Minas Gerais. Radio Vanguarda from Varginha, Rede Globo, SBT, TV Educativa, reporters from the Estado de Minas and Hoje em Dia in Belo Horizonte, the Correio do Sul, and various FM stations all attended. But the General had made a critical decision before the cameras even rolled: he had instructed his subordinates to notify all attendees in advance that he would not answer questions.

He delivered his statement with what Pacaccini described as “superb language,” declaring that the ESA had always been open, that the rumors were “frivolous, driven by hidden intentions,” and that no element or material from the school had any relation to the subject. Then he thanked the audience and turned to leave, declaring the press conference over, “just like that, without further ado.”

What followed was more revealing than the statement itself. As the General moved toward an adjoining room, a reporter from EPTV (the Globo affiliate in Varginha) broke from the press corps:

“General! General! Where were the military men cited by Pacaccini? What were they doing on the day of the creature's capture? And why did the convoy go to Varginha?”

The General responded sternly:

“They were working on behalf of the Army and for the benefit of the Nation!” — and turned his back to leave.

The reporter insisted:

“And can you prove it, sir?”

The General turned around, tense:

“Prove to whom?”

“To the press! Isn't it the press that wants proof of the facts?”

“I don't have to prove anything. What had to be said was said in this statement.”

He walked into the adjoining room. A subordinate slammed the door shut behind him.

Pacaccini's observation: in the stunned silence that followed, the reporters became convinced that something had indeed happened in Varginha. Military contacts later told him the General had “burned his image and that of the ESA” and that if anyone in the region still had doubts about the creature, “those doubts were now settled once and for all. Everything had been substantiated in a 'no' in favor of 'yes.'”

The Ministers' Meeting

Three weeks after the General's denial, something unprecedented occurred.

“May 29. In near-total secrecy, for the first time in Brazilian history, a Minister of State meets with the High Command outside of a capital city.”

The Army Minister, Zenildo Zoroastro de Lucena, traveled to Campinas with 29 generals, including the Chief of the General Staff (General Delio de Assis Monteiro), the Military Commander of the Southeast (General Paulo Neves de Aquino), all chiefs of directorates and departments, and the eight regional military commanders. The official agenda: evaluate 16 computers at an infantry battalion, inspect construction for new German Leopard tanks, and visit an agricultural research center's geographic information system.

As IPM 04 dryly notes, this was “an agenda that could easily have been handled by lower-ranking military personnel.”

Campinas is also where, according to the ufologists' chronology, the creatures had been taken five months earlier. Where Badan Palhares' forensic laboratory was located. Where “NASA-affiliated military personnel” had reportedly been working at Unicamp since January 26. And where, on February 28, 1996, according to IPM 07, the hospitalized mayor of Campinas had his wife initially denied entry to the Hospital das Clínicas at Unicamp due to an ongoing “special operation” with military personnel, many in civilian clothes. She was admitted only after being identified.

In the days before the minister's arrival, “according to military personnel from various places in the State of São Paulo, including the coast, several meetings were held in Campinas, Pirassununga, Bragança Paulista, and probably also in other states, involving high-ranking military personnel.”

Twenty-nine generals and the Army Minister, traveling to a provincial city in near-total secrecy, to look at sixteen computers. The ufologists found the cover story unconvincing. The military has never provided an alternative explanation for why this meeting required such unprecedented secrecy or such a concentration of senior leadership.

Thirty Years Later

The declassified documents tell us what was on the record in 1996-1997. But the Varginha case didn't end when the IPM was archived. Three decades of subsequent developments have both strengthened and complicated the narrative.

The Investigator Who Changed His Mind

Perhaps the most significant development in the case's 30-year history came in December 2023, when Ubirajara Rodrigues, the lawyer who co-investigated the case from the very beginning, broke over a decade of self-imposed silence:

“I no longer believe in any of this. It's practically 30 years of reflection. I tried to relate my errors, my mistakes with suggestions on how to change and what to really seek.”

Rodrigues went further, explicitly criticizing the investigative methodology — including his own. He said that that direct influence of investigators on witnesses was a “gross error” capable of “molding and reconstructing memories over time.” This is particularly significant because witnesses recalled that Rodrigues himself told the three girls, shortly after their encounter: “You didn't see a demon or an ape, you saw an extraterrestrial.” He now acknowledges this as a form of witness contamination.

He appeared in the 2026 Globo docuseries (“O Mistério de Varginha”) to explain how his early involvement and beliefs influenced the construction of the narrative around the case.

The Investigator Who Doubled Down

Pacaccini has taken the opposite trajectory. He testified before Brazil's Chamber of Deputies in September 2025, defending that at least five creatures were secretly captured by the Armed Forces. In January 2026, he participated in a closed-door congressional session in Washington's Longworth House Office Building with three members of the U.S. Congress and Brazilian witnesses. He published an expanded English edition of his book, Incident in Varginha: Space Creatures in the South of Minas.

The two men who jointly investigated the case, who carried weapons together during nighttime vigils, who received death threats together, whose work is preserved side by side in the military archives, now hold irreconcilable positions about what they found.

New Witnesses at 30 Years

The January 2026 events in Washington brought new testimony:

• Dr. Italo Venturelli -the neurosurgeon who claims he treated a non-human being at the Regional Hospital (described above)
• Carlos de Souza -an ultralight pilot who reported witnessing the crash site and handling metallic fragments (see below)
• Retired U.S. Colonel Fred Clausen -who claimed a U.S. cargo plane landed at Campinas Airport and departed with “unusual cargo,” suggesting an American dimension to the case that the IPM documents only hint at through references to “NASA-affiliated military personnel” arriving at Unicamp

A Firefighter's Reversal

In 2019, a firefighter who had provided key testimony about the creature capture was located and completely denied his original story, stating his deposition was “manipulated” and that he was “instructed to record the false account.” This is significant because firefighter testimony was central to the capture timeline described in IPM 04.

The 2026 Globo docuseries raised further questions about whether Pacaccini may have paid or promised payment to military personnel for testimony. This allegation was not new. A sworn deposition from 1997 had already documented exactly this claim. Sergeant Caubi Francisco Valerio, 33, an audiovisual equipment operator at the ESA, testified under oath on March 14, 1997, that Pacaccini had visited his home through an intermediary named Alessandro, a military goods manufacturer who used their friendship as a pretext. Once inside, according to Valerio's testimony in IPM 07, Pacaccini steered the conversation toward the ESA and the creature, then made a direct financial proposition:

“He knew a person of high rank in television who would buy any video tape for forty thousand reais, or any reliable information for ten thousand reais, having insisted for a long time on such claims.”

Valerio said he immediately reported the visit to Major Vilela of the Second Section (intelligence) and Major Calza of the Fifth Section. His testimony also revealed that Pacaccini had used a cover story, claiming he was “setting up a television station in Mato Grosso do Sul,” to justify his curiosity about the creature — though Valerio found this implausible for someone who should already have known about the Fantástico broadcast. Pacaccini issued a formal statement of repudiation, denying he ever paid for reports or induced testimonies.

The NORAD Data

NORAD recorded a satellite reentry over the region around January 20, 1996. This could account for the aerial phenomena that preceded the ground-level encounters (the UFO that Eurico and Oralina reported over their farm at 1:30 AM) but does not explain the subsequent claims of creature sightings and military operations.

Varginha Today

The city has fully embraced the incident. A 20-meter-tall spaceship-shaped water tower glows purple over the town center. Bus stops are shaped like flying saucers. The City Hall has a spaceship-shaped elevator. In September 2025, a 4-meter alien statue was unveiled at the Praça do ET (ET Plaza). Grey alien dolls in football uniforms are sold at the original sighting location. A planned UFO museum received over 1 million reais in federal funding, though construction has stalled.

The three girls, now women approaching middle age, have maintained their story. They appeared in the 2022 documentary Moment of Contact and have not recanted. They stopped giving free interviews years ago.

The Bigger Picture

Reading through a million characters of Portuguese military bureaucracy, what emerges is not a clear-cut case for or against the Varginha claims. What emerges is something more nuanced:

The Brazilian military took UFOs seriously. They maintained a formal reporting system for decades, used standardized questionnaires, classified the documentation, and transferred it to the National Archives when pressured by Congress and civilian researchers. The inventory alone lists hundreds of individual reports spanning the 1990s.

The Varginha case provoked a disproportionate response. Two separate investigations — first the sindicância in May 1996, then a nine-volume Military Police Inquiry, with dozens of depositions, to investigate whether a book constituted a crime against the Armed Forces. The inquiry meticulously documented alibis, tracked the UFO researchers' movements, probed potential leakers, and entered the entire investigative work of the ufologists as evidence — all to conclude that the claims were too implausible to prosecute.

The historical pattern is unexplained. UFO activity documented by the military over Varginha and the ESA in Três Corações in 1971. An encounter account from the same base in 1962. Then the famous 1996 incident. Three separate events spanning 34 years, all centered on the same small city and the same military installation. The documents offer no explanation for this pattern.

The military collected skeptical voices alongside the ufologists' claims. The Army included in its inquiry file a lengthy article by Cláudio Tsuyoshi Suenaga, a master's student in History at UNESP and CNPq fellow, published in Assis, SP. Suenaga argued the Varginha incident was a product of social rumor dynamics influenced by the American Roswell narrative and the Ray Santilli “autopsy” film. He drew on French sociologist Jean-Noël Kapferer's work on rumor propagation and made a pointed social observation: the creature, as described, “represents a kind of modern Macunaíma,” found “leaning against the wall of a vacant lot, in a situation that evokes that of street children — and just like them, it ended up arrested, a victim of police and military violence.” The Army's decision to include this analysis suggests it was building a case from multiple angles, not simply denying the claims.

The ufologists' investigation was extensive, but flawed. Over 45 military contacts, video-recorded testimonies, collaboration with international researchers including Stanton Friedman and John Mack, death threats, bribery attempts against witnesses, and night vigils with firearms. But one of the two lead investigators now says the methodology was compromised by witness contamination. A key firefighter witness says his testimony was manipulated. A military sergeant's sworn deposition documented Pacaccini offering R$40,000 for video and R$10,000 for information — an allegation that resurfaced three decades later in the Globo docuseries. And the forensic pathologist at the center of the autopsy allegations was never contacted before his name was published. Whatever one thinks of their conclusions, both the investigation's scope and its problems deserve acknowledgment.

Internal contradictions persist. The hospital director explicitly instructing staff to “deny everything” to “that lawyer, Ubirajara.” The fire department denying any calls when its own logs have gaps for the relevant dates. Air Force agencies contradicting each other about radar registrations. Military personnel forced to sign preemptive denial documents. A soldier's death officially attributed to a routine infection, while his family describes a man who came home from a mission and warned his father about an impending cover-up.

New testimony keeps emerging. Thirty years later, a neurosurgeon claims he treated a non-human being at the same hospital whose director told staff to deny everything. A retired U.S. colonel claims American military involvement. Meanwhile, one of the original investigators has recanted entirely. The case refuses to resolve.

Key questions remain unanswered. The autopsy report for Marco Eli Chereze was never provided to his family, his sister believes it “may have been altered,” a R$653 supplementary examination was never funded, and the rare Staphylococcus schleiferi found in his tissue samples has never been explained. A soldier attempted to sell six photographs and film of the captured creature to a television station — material that the ESA allegedly confiscated, raising the question of whether visual documentation of the creature existed and was suppressed. The “unidentified toxic substance” that killed the tapir and the “caustic intoxication without apparent cause” that killed the deer were never identified, and the lab results from Belo Horizonte were never publicly released. The Army confirmed only two documents exist about the entire Varginha affair. The bribery allegations against witnesses were never investigated. Badan Palhares denies involvement, but his own cryptic statement about needing “five years” was never followed up on, and no ufologist contacted him for sixteen years. The Regional Hospital administrator's cover story collapsed on camera when confronted with a forensic report that contradicted his timeline by ten days. And the zoo veterinarian's observation of Army trucks on January 22 directly contradicts the military's insistence that trucks only traveled to Varginha on January 25-26.

In January 1996, something happened in Varginha, Brazil, that has never been adequately explained. Depending on whom you ask, the events of that month represent either the most significant extraterrestrial contact event since Roswell, or a spectacular case of mass misidentification fueled by media frenzy and UFO enthusiasm.

What is not in dispute is that dozens of unconnected witnesses across a small Brazilian coffee city reported seeing things they could not explain, that the military mobilized in ways that went far beyond routine, and that a young police officer who was allegedly involved in the events died under circumstances that remain deeply suspicious nearly thirty years later.

This post is an attempt to lay out every well known detail of the Varginha incident, chronologically and comprehensively, drawing from the original Brazilian investigations, international research, documentary work, and the most recent testimony that emerged in January 2026 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Where accounts conflict, both versions are presented. Where evidence is lacking, that is noted plainly. The goal is not to convince anyone of anything. The goal is to put every piece of this puzzle in one place and let the reader decide what to make of it.

Varginha is a city of roughly 100,000 people in the landlocked state of Minas Gerais, in southeastern Brazil. Known primarily for its coffee production, the city sits in a region of rolling hills and cattle country about 300 kilometers north of São Paulo. Minas Gerais has long had a reputation as a hotspot for UFO-related reports in Brazil, though Varginha itself had no particular connection to the phenomenon before January 1996.

In the days and weeks leading up to the central events, residents of the broader region reported an increase in unusual aerial activity. Lights in the sky, objects moving in ways that conventional aircraft do not, the kinds of reports that fill UFO databases around the world. On their own, these sightings would have been unremarkable. In retrospect, they form the opening act of something much stranger.

NORAD, CINDACTA, and the Alleged Tracking of an Unknown Object

According to claims that surfaced through Brazilian UFO researchers, particularly Vitório Pacaccini, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) detected an uncorrelated object entering the western hemisphere in mid-January 1996. NORAD allegedly contacted its Brazilian counterpart, CINDACTA (Centro Integrado de Defesa Aérea e Controle de Tráfego Aéreo, or the Integrated Center for Air Defense and Air Traffic Control), to alert them that an unidentified flying object was descending over the southern portion of Minas Gerais state.

This information was reportedly leaked by both a Brazilian Air Force soldier and an employee at the radar facility of Air Force Base VI Comar. According to these sources, CINDACTA in turn alerted the Brazilian Army command at Três Corações, the military town about 25 kilometers from Varginha that houses the Escola de Sargentos das Armas (ESA), the Army's Sergeants School and a major military installation with over 5,000 personnel. All branches of the Brazilian military in the region were allegedly placed on heightened alert.

It should be noted that this claim has never been officially confirmed by NORAD, CINDACTA, or any Brazilian military authority. Some versions of the story go further, claiming that the United States Air Force had intercepted and damaged the object before it entered Brazilian airspace. This particular detail is even more difficult to verify and remains firmly in the category of rumor, though it has been repeated by multiple researchers over the years.

The Farming Community Sightings

Before the events in Varginha proper, rural residents in the surrounding area reported their own encounters. Among them were Eurico de Freitas and his wife Oralina, who lived on a farm outside the city. In the early morning hours of January 20, 1996, sometime around 1:00 AM, the couple was awakened by the panicked sounds of their farm animals. Cattle, chickens, and dogs were in a state of agitation, running back and forth across the fields.

Looking out their window, the couple reported seeing a silent craft hovering approximately five to six meters above the ground. They described it as submarine-shaped or cigar-shaped, roughly the size of a minibus, with a dim light illuminating its hull. A small cloud of smoke or grayish vapor was emerging from the rear of the object. It moved slowly, swaying gently from side to side, and took roughly 45 minutes to drift out of view, heading in the general direction of Varginha.

Also on January 13, the same day as the crash described in the next section, resident Afrânio da Costa Brasil and his nine-year-old daughter Emeline reportedly watched a strange craft hovering near their home. Emeline's drawing of the object, depicting a cigar or submarine-shaped form, would later match descriptions provided by other witnesses who had no contact with the family.

These sightings established a pattern: something was in the skies over southern Minas Gerais in the days before everything changed. But the farming community reports were just atmosphere. What happened on January 13 was the main event.

January 13, 1996: The Crash Witness

If the Varginha case has a Roswell, this is it. Not the creature sightings a week later, not the hospital encounters, not the military convoys through city streets. The story begins with a craft falling out of the sky and a man who stopped to help.

Carlos de Sousa was a local resident, a geography teacher at a nearby university, and an amateur ultralight pilot with enough flight hours to know what a conventional aircraft looks like in distress. On January 13, 1996, he was driving from São Paulo toward Minas Gerais to visit friends when he noticed something in the sky ahead of him.

It was cylindrical, roughly the size of a school bus, moving at an altitude of 300 to 400 meters. At first, de Sousa thought it might be a blimp or a small aircraft in trouble. It was not behaving like any aircraft he had ever seen. He would later compare its movement to a “broken washing machine,” lurching and struggling to maintain altitude, fighting against whatever force was pulling it down. There was a visible lateral tear along the side of the craft, and white smoke was trailing behind it. Not the black smoke of a fuel fire or engine failure. White smoke, as though something other than combustion was leaking from the hull.

De Sousa watched the object lose altitude steadily. Just before it reached the highway, it made a sudden, sharp 360-degree turn, as if making one last attempt to correct its trajectory, and then flew in the opposite direction. It managed to glide for a few more moments before its propulsion appeared to die completely. It dropped out of the sky like a stone and crashed to the earth near a small white house alongside the road.

De Sousa is not the kind of person who drives past an accident. He was a teacher, a pilot, someone trained to assess situations. His immediate thought was that people might be hurt. He turned his car toward the crash site.

What he found was not what he expected.

The object had come down hard. The area around the crash was scorched. Burned grass extended in a roughly 40-meter diameter from the point of impact. Debris was scattered across the ground. And the smell hit him immediately: a thick, nauseating wave of ammonia and rotten eggs, so powerful that he had to cover his face. This was not the smell of jet fuel or burning rubber. It was chemical, acrid, and unlike anything he had encountered before

De Sousa approached the wreckage. Among the scattered debris, he picked up a fragment of material that looked like aluminum foil. It was light. He crumpled it in his fist, the way you would crush a ball of tinfoil. And then he watched it unfold itself. The moment he released pressure, the material sprang back to its original shape, smooth and unbent, as though it had never been touched. He crumpled it again. It sprang back again. This detail, so specific and so strange, echoes one of the most persistent claims from Roswell witnesses in 1947, who described “memory metal” debris that behaved in exactly the same way.

De Sousa did not have long to investigate. Within minutes, military trucks arrived at the scene. This response time is itself remarkable. The crash had just occurred, in a rural area along a highway, and yet the military was already there. It suggests either extraordinary coincidence or that the Brazilian armed forces were already tracking the object and had units positioned to respond.

A soldier approached de Sousa. There was no conversation. No request for identification. No attempt to assess whether he was injured or in need of assistance. The soldier aimed his weapon directly at de Sousa's head and delivered a message that left no room for interpretation: “Leave now, or I'll split your skull.”

De Sousa dropped the fragment of debris. He got back in his car. He left.

But the encounter was not over. Shortly after fleeing the crash site, de Sousa was intercepted by two men in an unmarked dark vehicle. They were not in military uniform. They did not identify themselves. What they did was recite his personal information back to him: his name, his wife's name, his occupation, details about his life that a stranger should not have known. The message was clear: we know who you are, we know where to find you, and we know how to reach the people you love. They demanded his silence. They threatened his family if he spoke about what he had seen.

Carlos de Sousa went quiet. He gave one interview, in 1996, to Brazilian researcher Claudeir Covo. He spoke briefly on camera about what he had witnessed, describing the craft's movement and appearance. And then he disappeared from the public record for twenty-six years.

Think about what that means. For over a quarter of a century, a man who watched something fall out of the sky, who walked through the debris field, who held a piece of material that defied the known properties of any substance he had ever encountered, who had a gun pointed at his head by his own country's military, said nothing. He did not seek fame. He did not write a book. He did not sell his story to a tabloid. He raised his family, taught his classes, and carried the weight of what he had seen in silence.

It was not until James Fox tracked him down for the documentary Moment of Contact, released in 2022, that de Sousa agreed to speak again. And even then, it was reluctant. Fast forward to the present, On January 2026, James Fox held press conference at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., de Sousa stood before an audience that included a United States Congressman and described the object he had seen crash thirty years earlier. He used his hands to demonstrate the cylindrical shape of the craft. He described the smoke, the smell, the debris, the material that rebuilt itself in his palm. And he described the soldier, the gun, and the men in the dark car who knew his wife's name.

The crash Carlos de Sousa witnessed on January 13 is the event that sets the entire Varginha timeline in motion. If a craft came down outside the city that day, and if the military was already on alert because NORAD had tracked the object into Brazilian airspace, then everything that followed, the creatures loose in the streets a week later, the firefighters and soldiers swarming Jardim Andere, the captures, the hospitals, the convoys, the death of a young policeman, all of it flows from this single point: something fell from the sky, and whatever was inside it survived the impact.

January 20, 1996: The Day Everything Changed

Saturday, January 20, 1996, is the date that anchors the entire Varginha case. What began in the predawn hours with the Freitas family's sighting unfolded throughout the day into a series of events involving firefighters, soldiers, police officers, civilians, and hospital staff that would transform a quiet coffee city into one of the most famous UFO locations in the world.

Early Morning: The Fire Department Call and the First Capture of a unknown “being”

Sometime between 7:00 and 8:00 AM, the Varginha Fire Department received phone calls from residents of the Jardim Andere neighborhood reporting a “strange animal” in the wooded area between Jardim Andere and the Santana district. In Brazil, fire departments operate under the authority of the Military Police and routinely respond to reports of wild animals straying into urban areas. At first, the call was treated as nothing particularly unusual.

Around the same time, college student Hildo Lúcio Galdino, 20, who lived in Jardim Andere, reportedly opened his bathroom window and saw a creature with “oily dark brown skin crouched in the alleyway.” He described it as having very small hands with three extremely long fingers, “kind of like a starfish.” The creature ran away when Galdino cried out. He described it as hairless, unclothed, and roughly four to five feet tall.

By approximately 10:00 AM, firefighters in regulation uniforms, wearing thick gloves and carrying nets, arrived at the wooded area in Jardim Andere and began searching the vegetation. According to witness accounts compiled by researchers Ubirajara Franco Rodrigues and Vitório Pacaccini, the search lasted several hours. The firefighters reportedly spotted the creature and chased it through the brush before finally capturing it with the help of their nets.

Soon after the fire department arrived, a truck from the ESA military base in Três Corações pulled up to the site. Soldiers entered the woods as though on a special mission. Two civilian witnesses, including a man named Henrique José da Silva, reported hearing what sounded like four rifle shots from the wooded area.

Multiple witnesses reported seeing military personnel with camcorders documenting the scene. The creature was allegedly placed into a wooden box covered with a white plastic canvas, stretched taut so that the contents could not be seen, and transported away by an army truck.

Researcher Graham W. Birdsall, the British UFO journalist who was among the first Western investigators to compile a comprehensive timeline of the events, described the captured being as roughly 3.5 feet tall with oily brown skin, disproportionately large blood-red eyes, and three raised ridges on its head. It appeared injured, emitted a faint buzzing sound “like bees,” and had only a tiny mouth opening.

The involvement of specific military officers has been alleged by investigators. Lieutenant Colonel Olímpio Wanderley Santos was identified as the chief of operations at the site. Major Maciel was named as the chief of the first capture operation. These names were compiled from both the fire department insider source and civilian witnesses.

It is worth noting that in later years, newly released fire department documents obtained under Brazil's Access to Information Law revealed serious gaps in the official record for January 20, 1996. Researcher Rony Vernet found that only nine incidents were logged for the entire day, a remarkably low number compared to other days in January 1996. Liliane Fátima Silva (age 16), her sister Valquíria Fátima Silva (age 14), and their friend Kátia Andrade Xavier (age 22) were walking home from a domestic work assignment. They decided to take a shortcut through a vacant lot on Rua Dr. Benevenuto Braz Vieira in the Jardim Andere neighborhood, roughly two kilometers from the town center.

Some houses in the area were under construction. The lot was overgrown with tall grass. It was there, at approximately 3:30 PM, that Liliane noticed something crouched against a wall, partially hidden beneath some graffiti.

What she saw stopped her in her tracks.

The creature was small, perhaps 80 centimeters to one and a half meters tall (accounts vary between roughly 2.5 and 5 feet). It was crouching, appeared naked, and had no visible sexual organs. Its head was disproportionately large, roughly triangular in shape. Three large ridges or protuberances ran from its forehead to the back of its skull. Its eyes were enormous, red, oval-shaped, and appeared to bulge outward. They lacked visible pupils. Its skin was dark brown, oily-looking, with prominent veins visible on the surface. And the smell. Every witness mentioned the smell. A powerful, acrid odor, compared to ammonia or sulfur, that was almost unbearable.

Liliane screamed. The creature looked at her. In her words, given nearly thirty years later for the January 2026 press conference: “When I saw it, I had a terrible feeling as if the world had stopped. The creature looked at me. I looked into its eyes. It gave me a sensation that it was suffering, that it was asking for help, hiding from someone.”

The investigators concluded that Mudinho, probably soiled from the heavy rains, was seen crouching by a wall and was mistaken for a creature.

However, the three women have always rejected this explanation. They knew Mudinho. They had seen him in the neighborhood on other occasions. What they encountered in the vacant lot, they insist, was not a human being.

Early Evening: Other Civilian Sightings

The three girls were not the only civilians to report seeing something strange that day.

Beyond Hildo Galdino's morning sighting, other witnesses came forward in the days and weeks that followed. A man jogging through the woods of Jardim Andere and a lawyer living nearby reported hearing gunshots and then seeing soldiers and police officers climbing up a slope carrying bags, some of which appeared to be moving.

At least one other sighting involved a couple who reported seeing a creature at a different location in the Varginha area, matching the same general description: small, dark-skinned, large-headed, with prominent red eyes.

A local taxi driver claimed to have seen a “shaking creature, like a child in pain,” being loaded into a truck by men in what appeared to be hazmat gear. His account was dismissed by officials

Around 8:00 PM: The Military Police Encounter and the Second Capture

Later that evening, as a sudden and violent rainstorm moved through Varginha with hailstones heavy enough to damage rooftops, the most consequential encounter of the day allegedly took place.

Two plainclothes military police intelligence officers (P-2, the Military Police's secret service division) were on a surveillance mission in the Jardim Andere area, tasked with observing any unusual activity. They were driving down Rua Benevenuto Braz Vieira, the same street where the girls had seen the creature hours earlier, when something darted across the road in front of their vehicle.

The driver braked sharply. Corporal Marco Eli Chereze, 23 years old, jumped out of the car.

What happened next depends on the source. The most commonly cited account, supported by Chereze's own family, is that he attempted to capture whatever had crossed the road. He grabbed the creature with his bare hands, without gloves or any protective equipment. During the struggle, the creature scratched his left arm. Chereze managed to wrestle it into the back seat of the vehicle

His partner at the time was Corporal Eric Lopes. Lopes has never publicly confirmed or denied the incident. When approached by investigators in later years, he allegedly pulled a gun on them and declared he knew nothing.

The creature was driven first to a health center in the city, which reportedly refused to accept it. Then the officers took it to the Hospital Regional de Varginha (Regional Hospital of Southern Minas Gerais), where one room was isolated as soon as the creature arrived.

Chereze's mother, Lourdes, later recalled that her son came home around 6:00 PM that evening with his shirt soaked from the rain. He changed clothes and told her to let his wife know he would not be home for dinner because he was “on a mission.”

The military police's own records, according to the official investigation, do not show Chereze on the work schedule for January 20. His family disputes this, maintaining that he worked in plainclothes and that his assignments were not always formally logged

Being is taken to: Hospital Regional de Varginha

The accounts of what happened at Hospital Regional form one of the most medically detailed and, for many observers, most compelling aspects of the Varginha case. Multiple medical professionals have come forward over the years, though most have done so reluctantly and some only recently.

According to the testimony of Dr. Italo Venturelli, a neurosurgeon who has worked at Hospital Regional for decades, he was on duty at the hospital on January 20, 1996. A colleague pulled him aside and first showed him a brief black-and-white video, roughly 15 to 20 seconds long, depicting what appeared to be an unusual patient. He was then directed to a room where the “patient” was lying in a bed.

Dr. Italo, who did not speak publicly about his experience for nearly three decades, provided his full account to filmmaker James Fox for the first time in 2025, after a near-fatal heart attack persuaded him that the truth should be told while he was still alive to tell it. He subsequently traveled to Washington, D.C. in January 2026 to testify both in a private closed-door session with three members of the U.S. Congress and at a public press conference at the National Press Club.

His description of the being is extraordinarily specific. He said it looked roughly like a seven-year-old child. Its eyes were lilac-colored and teardrop-shaped. The cranium was also teardrop-shaped and disproportionately large. Its skin was white (notably lighter than the brown, oily skin described by the girls who saw a creature in the street). It had a slim torso with no nipples. A small mouth. A sliver of ears. Three fingers and a thumb on each hand. It was bare above the bed sheet.

According to Dr. Italo, his colleague Dr. Marcos Vinico Neves had already treated the being, suturing a wound on its cranium. Neves died in 2018, and no medical records of this procedure are known to survive.

Dr. Italo spent three to four minutes at the bedside, having been asked to perform a visual examination. What struck him most were the eyes.

“It transmitted calm and tranquility,” he told the congressional representatives. He described a sense that the being was at peace with what was happening, and that he perceived it as possessing intelligence greater than his own. He compared the feeling to looking at an angel.

At one point, the being looked at him, then looked out the window at the blue sky, and then looked back at the doctor, as if to communicate its wish to be released.

When asked by Representative Anna Paulina Luna whether other medical staff could corroborate his story, Dr. Italo said yes, but noted that most doctors are afraid to speak out because they have been threatened or fear damage to their careers.

The official version from the hospital has always been a denial. Staff members publicly stated that no unusual patient was treated at the facility. No medical records have surfaced. Dr. Adilson Usier, another physician whose name has been connected to the case, has consistently denied examining any extraterrestrial being.

However, a hospital orderly named Carlos de Souza told investigators that Dr. Usier spent over an hour in isolation room 15 on the night of January 20 and emerged looking shocked, immediately making phone calls. A nurse, who spoke to investigators in 1996 but later requested anonymity, described something being brought through the back entrance around 11:00 PM. She was told it was “a deformed animal for research purposes.” A military doctor who came out of the room reportedly told her, “This isn't from Earth.”

Hospital Humanitas

There are also accounts indicating that at least one creature was taken to the better-equipped Hospital Humanitas in Varginha, either directly or after an initial stop at Hospital Regional.

On the evening of January 22, 1996, three military trucks were reportedly seen outside Humanitas between 3:00 and 6:00 PM. Witnesses described a hospital room thick with the ammonia-like odor that had become the signature of the Varginha encounters. At least 15 doctors were allegedly present, along with firefighters and soldiers, surrounding a small wooden casket. By nightfall, the being inside was said to be dead.

American ufologist Dr. Roger Leir, who visited Varginha and published the first major English-language account of the case (UFO Crash in Brazil, 2005), reported that he interviewed a surgeon at Humanitas who said he had been instructed by armed officers to perform corrective surgery on what was described simply as “a leg.” The operating theater was sealed except for one entrance manned by armed guards. Members of the Brazilian Army's S-2 military intelligence division were present inside the room during the procedure.

The surgeon Leir interviewed, identified only as “Doctor” and granted anonymity, described a being with injuries of different kinds and severity. He was urgently called by military staff and described his astonishment at encountering something “never seen or reported before.” One of the most extraordinary claims from this unnamed surgeon is that he experienced intense telepathic communication with the being at the end of the surgery. He provided a precise physical description that aligned with those given by other witnesses.

The Question of Dr. Fortunato Badan Palhares

No discussion of the hospital angle is complete without addressing the controversial figure of Dr. Fortunato Badan Palhares, a prominent forensic pathologist associated with the University of Campinas (Unicamp).

For years, UFO researchers claimed that Palhares was the physician who performed an autopsy on one of the Varginha creatures after they were transferred to Unicamp. Palhares was a high-profile figure in Brazilian forensic medicine, known for his work on notorious criminal cases. His alleged involvement lent the Varginha case an aura of scientific credibility.

In 2012, when directly contacted by European researcher Aurimas Svitojus, Palhares categorically denied any involvement. His reply (translated from Portuguese) was unambiguous: “Unfortunately, all information about the Varginha ET involving my name are fruits of fantasy authors and do not deserve any respect from me because they are liars.” He further stated: “I did not and never was called to do absolutely anything with this matter. I am a scientist and I do not need to hide such facts if they exist. I am not connected to any intelligence or defense agencies. I am a free citizen and unhindered to speak what I want.”

This denial was seized upon by skeptics as a definitive debunking of a key pillar of the case. Believers countered that any physician involved in a classified operation would be expected to deny involvement, particularly if still under threat or oath.

Early accounts from researchers had noted that Palhares, while denying involvement, once stated he “may have more to say at a later time.” Whether this hinted at eventual disclosure or was simply a throwaway comment remains a matter of interpretation.

It is important to distinguish Dr. Fortunato Badan Palhares, whose involvement in autopsying the Varginha creatures has been denied, from Dr. Armando Fortunato, the forensic pathologist who performed the autopsy on Marco Eli Chereze. These are different individuals, despite the similar names, and their roles in the case are distinct.

The Death of Marco Eli Chereze

Of all the threads that make up the Varginha case, none is more disturbing or more resistant to easy dismissal than the fate of the 23-year-old military police corporal who allegedly captured one of the creatures with his bare hands.

Timeline of His Illness

After the events of January 20, Chereze reportedly complained of a strange, greasy residue on his skin that would not wash off. His clothes retained a persistent ammonia-like odor. Family members and colleagues noticed that his body had become “greasy and sticky” in a way that was difficult to explain.

Within days, a small abscess or tumor, similar to a furuncle, appeared under his left armpit, near where the creature had allegedly scratched him. The official military account would later claim that this cyst was pre-existing and that surgery to remove it had been scheduled before the January 20 events. His family contests this.

On February 12, 1996, Chereze was hospitalized at Hospital Bom Pastor in Varginha, complaining of severe abdominal pain and high fever. His condition deteriorated rapidly.

On February 15, 1996, less than three days after admission, he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. One of his attending physicians was Dr. Cesário Lincoln Furtado. Less than five hours after the ICU transfer, Marco Eli Chereze was declared dead.

He was 23 years old. He was buried the following day, February 16, as is customary in tropical Brazil.

Cause of Death

The official cause of death was listed as sepsis, pneumonia, and a generalized infection caused by what doctors described as a “benign bacteria” whose source was never determined. The former commander of the 24th Military Police Battalion of Varginha, Maurício Antonio Santos, stated: “The death occurred due to a strong hospital infection after the operation. Former soldier Chereze was not involved in any incident with extraterrestrials.”

But the details do not sit comfortably with the official explanation.

Dr. Cesário Lincoln Furtado, who treated Chereze in his final days, gave a long interview to researcher Ubirajara Franco Rodrigues in August 2004, published in Brazilian UFO Magazine (No. 102). Furtado described an infection that was aggressive in ways he could not explain, in a patient whose age and physical condition should not have led to such a rapid death from what appeared to be a routine abscess.

In a separate development that surfaced at the January 2026 press conference, Dr. Armando Fortunato, a forensic pathologist and criminal medical examiner for the Civil Police with over thirty years of experience, confirmed that he had performed the autopsy on Chereze. Dr. Armando presented testimony to three U.S. Congressional representatives in a closed-door meeting in Representative Tim Burchett's office on January 15, 2026.

Dr. Armando also submitted to the representatives a signed statement from Dr. João Janini, 89, a specialist in pathological anatomy who claims to have performed over 50,000 autopsies and conducted more than a million microscopic analyses during his career. His sister, Marta Tavares Chereze, claims that shortly after his death she went to the office of Dr. Cesário Lincoln Furtado and stated that Marco had revealed on his deathbed that he took part in a secret mission to recover an alien creature. Marta is the only person known to have heard this deathbed statement, and some family members dispute her specific claim about a confession, though the broader family unanimously insists Marco was involved in something that night and that his death was connected to it.

Marco's wife, Valéria, attempted to obtain her husband's complete medical records. When she finally received documents from the hospital, she discovered that pages were missing. The police superintendent who led the inquiry into the death was unable to attend the autopsy despite his insistence. The necropsy report was withheld from the family for eleven months after the burial.

Marta attempted to file a lawsuit without legal representation, claiming the hospital was responsible for Marco's death due to medical error. The case stalled.

It was not until January 20, 1997, one year after the incident, that investigators publicly denounced the withholding of the autopsy report. James Fox, the documentary filmmaker who has spent over two decades investigating the case, has pointed to a possible theory: that the creatures were ammonia-based rather than carbon-based beings, and that derivatives of the ammonia molecule, which are extremely toxic and easily absorbed through the skin, gut, and respiratory tract, could have been responsible for Chereze's infection and death. This remains speculative, but it would explain both the omnipresent ammonia smell reported by virtually every witness and the otherwise inexplicable nature of the bacterium that killed a young, healthy man in 26 days.

Military and Government Response

The Official Position

The Brazilian military's official position on the Varginha incident has remained consistent: nothing happened. No creatures were captured. No UFOs crashed. No unusual operations were conducted.

The head of the official inquiry (an Inquérito Policial Militar, or IPM) stated that “the presence of the Firefighters in Jardim Andere, the parking of Army trucks in the vicinity of the concessionaire where their periodic maintenance would be carried out... and the departure of ESA vehicles... were real facts... incorrectly interpreted as Firefighters and the Military participating in the capture and later the transport of the alleged creature to Campinas.”

In other words: the military vehicles that residents saw throughout Varginha in January 1996 were simply delivering trucks to a garage for maintenance. There was nothing clandestine about it.

The 2010 Brazilian Army investigation concluded that the three young women had mistaken the homeless man Mudinho for an alien creature, and that all military activity in the area was routine. The investigation produced a 357-page report that has been partially released.

Lieutenant Colonel Olímpio Vanderlei Santos, who was identified by investigators as the chief of the alleged capture operation, denied involvement from his retirement home in Franca, São Paulo. “We used to go to Varginha by car because the city was our support point in terms of fleet maintenance,” he said. “There was a climate of concern, colleagues were scared at the time. I was surprised when I saw my name involved.”

Major Eduardo Calza, a military spokesman, offered what is perhaps the most colorful official explanation: the creature seen by witnesses was “an expectant dwarf couple and a mentally handicapped dwarf.”

Brazil has, in some respects, been more transparent about UFOs than many other governments. However, on the specific matter of Varginha, the government has maintained its denial. No official from any branch of the Brazilian government has publicly acknowledged that anything extraordinary occurred in the city in January 1996.

The Americans

One of the most persistent threads in the Varginha case is the alleged involvement of the United States military in the aftermath.

A Brazilian Air Force radar operator and traffic controller named Marco Feres reportedly told investigators that on or about January 20, 1996, a U.S. Air Force cargo plane, most likely a C-17, took off from an American base and landed at Viracopos airport in Campinas to pick up unusual cargo before departing for an unknown location in the United States. Eduardo Mondini, a Brazilian researcher, found an employee at the IML (Instituto Médico Legal, the Institute of Legal Medicine) in Campinas who reported military movement inside the facility during January 20-26, involving the Army's private storage areas.

At the January 2026 press conference, retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Fred Claussen, who held a top-secret clearance, outlined ways such a mission might be documented. He noted that any cargo plane flight would require paperwork from Air Mobility Command at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois and the Air Mobility Wing at Charleston Air Force Base in South Carolina. Air refueling would generate additional records, as would an international flight plan to Brazil, even if the mission were classified. At Campinas, there would be refueling records and another international flight plan.

“Even without a paper trail,” Claussen stated, “thirty to forty Americans involved with the operation should have direct knowledge of this flight and its purpose. Here is my plea: if you were a participant and have knowledge of this mission, come forward.”

Representative Anna Paulina Luna, who attended the closed-door meeting with the Brazilian witnesses, suggested Congress should seek Air Force flight logs and landing permits to confirm or deny any American retrieval operation. Whether such a paper trail exists remains unknown.

Dr. Roger Leir reported being shown authenticated documents concerning agreements between Brazil and the United States that allow “any material coming from space that is found in Brazil to be turned over to the government of the United States.” In the weeks following the incident, a surprise visit to Brazil was paid by Warren Christopher and Daniel S. Goldin, who were at the time the U.S. Secretary of State and the Director of NASA, respectively. The timing may be coincidental. It may not.

An anonymous Brazilian military witness provided a videotaped statement for the January 2026 press conference, his face obscured, stating that he was in the army in 1996 and helped transport the being from the hospital in Varginha to Três Corações and from there to Campinas, where other soldiers took over. Upon returning to Três Corações, he said, “There was talk the Americans had the creature, having transported it to an undisclosed location.”

Other Witnesses and Ancillary Events

The Varginha Zoo

A series of events at the Varginha Zoo has been linked, at least speculatively, to the broader incident.

On the evening of April 21, 1996, roughly three months after the main events, 67-year-old Terezinha Gallo Clepf was attending a birthday party at a restaurant located within the grounds of the Varginha Zoo. She stepped out onto the restaurant's covered porch to smoke a cigarette when she felt that someone was watching her. Turning to her left, she came face to face with a creature she could not identify.

She described it as having oily skin, dark and brilliantly brown in color, with red eyes and just a slit where the lips should be. It was approximately seven meters (about 23 feet) away, staring directly at her. She observed it for roughly five minutes before retreating inside the restaurant to collect her thoughts. When she went back out, the creature was still there. Clepf's description matched earlier accounts provided by the girls and other witnesses.

In the weeks and months following this sighting, several animals at the zoo died under unexplained circumstances. Accounts vary regarding the exact number and species, but multiple sources cite a tapir, an ocelot (or jaguar), and two deer. Some accounts add a blue macaw to the list, bringing the total to five. The zoo's veterinarian, Dr. Marcos Mina, removed the animals' viscera and sent them to a laboratory, where an unidentified toxic substance was reportedly found. The deaths were officially diagnosed as “caustic intoxication,” and zoo authorities discouraged speculation about any connection to an alien pathogen.

The connection between the zoo animal deaths and the Varginha creatures is unproven. The timing is suggestive but the months-long gap between the main events and the animal deaths makes a direct causal link difficult to establish.

Intimidation of Witnesses

Multiple witnesses reported being visited by strangers who attempted to silence them through threats or bribes.

Luiza Helena da Silva, the mother of sisters Liliane and Valquíria, stated that she was visited by four men dressed in black suits who offered her a briefcase filled with cash if her daughters would go on television and claim the creature they saw was actually a calf, a sick dog, or a sick human being. She refused and threatened to call the police. The men left. She described them as foreigners.

Carlos de Sousa, whose encounter at the crash site is described in detail earlier in this account, was threatened at gunpoint at the scene and then intercepted by men in a dark vehicle who knew his personal details and threatened his family.

Vitório Pacaccini, one of the primary investigators, claimed that after accusing the military of a cover-up, his car was driven off the road on four separate occasions. On the fourth attempt, two shots were fired at his vehicle.

Local news reporter Nyei Nadeia, who was a friend of the police commissioner handling the case, attempted to investigate the scene and found that the military had set up a blockade. When he approached, a soldier told him he could not pass. When he asked why, the response was: “It's a matter of national security.”

The Couple Who Saw a Creature at Night

Additional accounts describe a couple who reported seeing a creature of similar description crossing a road at night. The being allegedly shielded its red eyes from their headlights. Details on this particular sighting are thinner than the others, and the couple's identities have not been widely publicized, but the account is consistent with the pattern of sightings during this period.

Rosangela Ramos and the Chief of Police

In one of the most recent developments, on January 26, 2026, a woman named Rosangela Ramos appeared on camera with James Fox. She stated that her late husband, Pedro Luiz Aguiar, was the chief of police in Três Corações in 1996 and had been on duty during the incident. He claimed to have also witnessed the creature, though Ramos had no further details about the specific circumstances. Aguiar died in December 2025, taking whatever he knew to his grave.

Key Researchers and Investigators

Ubirajara Franco Rodrigues

Ubirajara Franco Rodrigues was a lawyer, law professor, and ufologist who became the primary on-the-ground investigator of the Varginha case. He applied legal methodology to witness evaluation and collected over 15 video-recorded testimonies from military and civilian sources. He was the first researcher to interview the three girls after their sighting and found them still visibly traumatized.

Rodrigues worked methodically, tracking down death records, locating Chereze's family, and compiling a detailed timeline of events. He was the one who obtained Dr. Cesário Lincoln Furtado's critical interview about Chereze's treatment and death. His 2001 book, O Caso Varginha, remains one of the foundational texts on the case.

In a notable turn, Rodrigues became more skeptical over time. In later years, he was “brought back to the scene” on what he described as the opposite front, dismissing the main military witness and rebutting claims that Marco Eli Chereze had made a deathbed confession. He stated publicly: “There is no proof that an extraterrestrial being was captured in Varginha. People said that they saw, that they touched an extraterrestrial, but this does not serve as scientific proof. At that time, our tendency was to believe that it was a being from another planet.”

Rodrigues's shift from believer to skeptic has been interpreted both as intellectual honesty and as evidence of pressure to recant. The truth likely lies somewhere in between.

Vitório Pacaccini

Vitório Pacaccini was an Italian-Brazilian engineer with over 30 years of UFO research experience who became the case's most vocal public advocate. He reportedly lived in Varginha for approximately two years conducting full-time investigation. He claimed to have videotaped interviews with at least seven military officers, which he kept in secure locations.

Pacaccini was the one who first publicized the NORAD/CINDACTA connection and who named Lieutenant Colonel Olímpio Wanderley Santos as the chief of the capture operation. He was a tireless promoter of the case but also a polarizing figure whose aggressive style alienated some fellow researchers.

After years of relative silence, Pacaccini resurfaced shortly after the announcement of the Moment of Contact documentary. He served as a consultant for the Varginha ET Museum, which was inaugurated in November 2022.

He has also claimed to have watched a “very definitive and detailed” video of the Varginha creature, reportedly 35 seconds in length, back in 2012.

A.J. Gevaerd and Brazilian UFO Magazine

Ademar José Gevaerd, editor of the Brazilian UFO Magazine and the Brazilian UFO Network, played a central role in bringing the case to national and international attention. He published extensive investigative pieces, facilitated the release of key testimonies including the Dr. Furtado interview, and served as a bridge between Brazilian researchers and the international UFO community.

International Investigators

The case attracted serious investigators from outside Brazil. Bob Pratt, the former National Enquirer UFO desk chief, made multiple trips to Brazil. Dr. John Mack, the Harvard Medical School professor, Pulitzer Prize winner, and alien abduction researcher, took a personal interest. Stanton Friedman, the nuclear physicist who helped bring the Roswell case to public attention, investigated alongside Birdsall and contributed to early international coverage. John Carpenter, a U.S. abduction researcher, judged the case after interviewing witnesses as “a darn good one” that might stand “equal to Roswell” in its weight of converging testimony.

Dr. Roger Leir, an American surgeon and ufologist, made the first substantial English-language contribution with his 2005 book UFO Crash in Brazil, based on extensive interviews with military officials, hospital surgeons, and civilian witnesses.

Developments Over the Decades

The Late 1990s

The Varginha case exploded into Brazilian media almost immediately. Fantástico, Brazil's biggest television show at the time (with 52-60% viewership share), ran segments on the “ET de Varginha.” The story made national headlines and drew both fascination and ridicule. International UFO researchers began arriving in Varginha within months.

The Brazilian military conducted its IPM investigation. The family of Marco Eli Chereze fought for access to his autopsy report. Researchers scrambled to document witness testimony before memories faded or people were silenced.

By the late 1990s, the core narrative had been established: a possible UFO crash, multiple creature sightings, military captures, hospital involvement, and a suspicious death. But hard evidence, photographs, video, medical records, physical samples, remained elusive.

The 2000s

The case entered a quieter phase. The three girls declined to give further unpaid interviews. Some researchers moved on. Varginha began to lean into its UFO identity, investing in themed tourism infrastructure. A 20-meter tall spaceship-shaped water tower was erected in the town center. Bus stops were designed to look like flying saucers. A UFO museum was planned and partially funded but construction stalled, leaving what locals described as a “rusty skeleton of a spaceship surrounded by weeds.”

Roger Leir published his book in 2005, providing the most comprehensive English-language account to date. New witnesses trickled forward but no breakthrough evidence emerged.

The 2010s

The Brazilian Army's 357-page investigation report, concluded around 2010, offered its official explanations: Mudinho, routine military maintenance, mass misidentification. Skeptics pointed to the report as definitive. Believers argued it was a whitewash.

In 2012, Dr. Badan Palhares's emphatic denial of involvement was published, dealing a blow to the narrative that he had performed an alien autopsy. The same year, Pacaccini claimed to have seen video evidence of the creature.

2022: Moment of Contact

James Fox's documentary Moment of Contact, released in October 2022, was a watershed moment for the case. For the first time, a polished, professionally produced film brought the Varginha story to a global English-speaking audience. It featured Carlos de Sousa breaking his 26-year silence on camera, along with other new witness testimony and claims of continued cover-up.

The film concluded with testimony that the crashed UFO and recovered beings were ultimately loaded onto a USAF cargo plane at Campinas and transported to the United States. It also featured retired Brazilian Air Force General José Carlos Pereira, who told Fox: “Governments tend to cover up everything they can't explain to their population.”

The documentary received mixed reviews. Some praised its witness-driven approach and emotional impact. Others criticized it for a lack of hard evidence. But its effect on bringing the case to international attention was undeniable.

2025: New Documentaries and Continued Investigation

In 2025, two significant developments occurred. Fox produced an expanded version of his documentary, New Revelations of Alien Encounters, incorporating testimony from Dr. Italo Venturelli and other new witnesses. Separately, Brazilian directors Ricardo Calil and Paulo Gonçalves produced O Mistério de Varginha (The Mystery of Varginha) for Rede Globo, one of Brazil's largest media networks, bringing renewed domestic attention to the case.

Newly released fire department documents obtained under Brazil's Access to Information Law revealed the suspicious gaps in the official record for January 20, 1996, adding another layer to the case.

In September 2025, the city of Varginha installed a 4-meter (13-foot) tall alien statue created by artist Renato Criaturas, further cementing the city's identity as Brazil's “UFO capital.”

January 2026: The Thirtieth Anniversary and Capitol Hill

The most dramatic recent development came in January 2026, exactly thirty years after the original incident. James Fox organized a two-part event in Washington, D.C. that represented the most significant public airing of the Varginha case in its history.

The Closed-Door Congressional Meeting (January 15, 2026)

On January 15, Fox brought three Brazilian witnesses to a private meeting in the office of Representative Tim Burchett (R-TN). In attendance were Burchett, Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL, chairwoman of the House Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets), and Representative Eric Burlison (R-MO), along with staff members. Two Democrats with longstanding interest in UAP issues, Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) and Andre Carson (D-IN), were invited but unable to attend. Also present were journalists Leslie Kean and Ralph Blumenthal, who had exclusive media access to the event.

The three witnesses who testified were Dr. Italo Venturelli (the neurosurgeon), Dr. Armando Fortunato (the forensic pathologist who autopsied Chereze), and Carlos de Sousa (the geography teacher and crash witness).

“Can you take it from the top?” Luna asked Dr. Italo at the beginning of the meeting. “Who brought the being in? I want detail about what the interaction was, from point A to point B.”

Burchett pressed on communication: “Was the being able to communicate in any way? Was it telepathic or anything like that?”

Dr. Italo's testimony was detailed and emotional. He described the being's lilac eyes, its calm demeanor, his sense that it possessed intelligence greater than his own. He told the representatives that he had learned the being was taken from the hospital to the ESA military base, then to Campinas, and then to the United States.

Burlison asked if other medical staff could corroborate. “It's very important to get the others,” he said.

The National Press Club Conference (January 20, 2026)

Five days later, on the exact thirtieth anniversary of the incident, Fox held a public press conference at the National Press Club.

Six additional Brazilian witnesses had been denied entry to the United States by the State Department on the grounds that they might overstay their visas. In response, Fox and his producing partner Aline Kras traveled to Brazil in December 2025 to compile their testimonies on videotape. These were screened at the conference.

The video statements included fresh testimony from Liliane Silva, Valquíria Silva, and Kátia Xavier, whose descriptions remained unchanged after three decades. Luiza Helena da Silva, their mother, described the V-shaped footprint, the lingering ammonia smell, and the visit from the four men in black who offered cash for the family's silence.

Kirk McConnell, a 37-year veteran of the Senate Armed Services Committee, the Senate Intelligence Committee, and the House Intelligence Committee who retired in early 2024, opened the event. He revealed that reports similar to those from the Varginha case had reached senators and staff during their UAP investigations. The interested senators, who included now-Secretary of State Marco Rubio, had held meetings in sensitive compartmented intelligence facilities “with very credible sources reporting both direct and secondhand knowledge of the reality of highly intelligent nonhuman beings, government retrievals and reverse engineering of craft not made by human beings, and the recovery of bodies of non-human beings.”

“So what these folks are going to tell you today are astounding,” McConnell said, “but they're not the only credible testimony about such events.”

Jacques Vallée, the French-American computer scientist who has worked on projects at NASA and DARPA, provided a video statement citing a “data warehouse system” compiled for the Defense Intelligence Agency containing over 200,000 reports of anomalous objects in flight, plus “hundreds of reports of creatures, live or dead, associated with crashed or landed vehicles of unknown provenance, including some similar to those in Varginha.”

Brazilian Senator Eduardo Girão came to Washington to meet with members of Congress and attended the event. He and Burlison discussed the need for a joint Brazilian-American effort to acquire tangible evidence.

Representative Burlison, who had flown in from Missouri at 4:00 AM to attend, delivered the press conference's most quoted line: “If there's any government that's holding information about the knowledge of whether or not we are alone or not alone in the universe, that is not for any government, no matter how powerful it is, to withhold from the rest of humanity.”

Where the Case Stands Now

As of early 2026, the Varginha case remains exactly what it has been for thirty years: extraordinarily compelling testimony from dozens of independent witnesses, unsupported by the kind of physical evidence that would settle the matter beyond dispute.

What Exists

Over two dozen witnesses to various aspects of the case have come forward independently, providing pieces of a puzzle that seem to fit together. These include three young women who saw a creature in a vacant lot, a geography teacher who witnessed a crash, a neurosurgeon who examined a being in a hospital bed, a forensic pathologist who autopsied a young policeman who died of an inexplicable infection, military personnel who transported something from Varginha to Campinas, and civilians who saw convoys, blockades, and creatures in places they should not have been.

The descriptions are specific and consistent across witnesses who had no contact with each other. The smell of ammonia. The oily brown skin. The large red or lilac eyes. The three protuberances on the head. The three-fingered hands. The sense that the being was intelligent, suffering, and afraid.

The death of Marco Eli Chereze is documented and real. His rapid decline from a seemingly healthy 23-year-old to dead in 26 days remains medically suspicious. The bacterium that killed him has been described by a pathologist with 50,000 autopsies to his name as unlike anything he has seen.

The gaps in fire department records for January 20, 1996, are documented and real. The intimidation of witnesses, while harder to prove, is reported by multiple unrelated sources.

What Does Not Exist (Yet)

No photograph of a Varginha creature has been publicly released. No video has surfaced, though Fox claims to know the identities of people who possess such footage. No medical records from the hospitals have been produced. No physical evidence, no material from the alleged crash, no biological sample from the creatures, has been presented to the public or the scientific community.

Fox has stated that he “never gives up” on obtaining the alleged video evidence. A legal effort to exhume Marco Eli Chereze's body for further analysis has been filed.

The Skeptical View

Skeptics point to the complete lack of physical evidence as fatal to the case. Brian Dunning has called it “the most compelling example of a case where literally nothing at all happened that was remotely unusual” that was “magnified into a case considered unassailable proof of alien visitation.” The official investigation's explanation of Mudinho as the misidentified creature, combined with routine military maintenance as the explanation for the vehicle activity, provides a prosaic account that does not require invoking extraterrestrial visitors.

One of the original girl witnesses reportedly converted to an evangelical religion and dismissed the incident as “youthful folly,” though the other two have maintained their accounts consistently.

Spanish investigator J.J. Benítez's claim of discovering landing marks from a spacecraft near Varginha was debunked by engineer Claudeir Covo, who determined the marks were holes made by a vertical digger and remnants of removed termite mounds.

The Believer's View

Proponents argue that the sheer number and consistency of witnesses over three decades is itself a form of evidence. They point to the professional credentials of those who have come forward, particularly Dr. Italo Venturelli, a practicing neurosurgeon who still works at the hospital where the events occurred and who has no obvious motive to fabricate a story that could destroy his career.

They note that the official investigation's Mudinho explanation was rejected by the very witnesses it was supposed to explain, all of whom knew the man personally. They highlight the death of Marco Eli Chereze as something that simply cannot be hand-waved away. And they point to the pattern of intimidation, record-tampering, and official denial as consistent with a cover-up, not with nothing having happened.

Jacques Vallée's database for the Defense Intelligence Agency, containing hundreds of reports of creatures associated with crashed vehicles, provides a broader context in which Varginha is not an isolated anomaly but one of many similar cases, most of which remain classified.

Looking Forward

The January 2026 events in Washington represented a new phase for the case. For the first time, Varginha witnesses testified directly to U.S. Congressional representatives. The involvement of Kirk McConnell, a senior Congressional staffer who confirmed that similar reports had reached senators during classified briefings, placed the case within the broader UAP disclosure conversation that has been building since David Grusch's 2023 testimony about U.S. crash retrieval programs.

The prospect of a joint Brazilian-American evidence-seeking operation, discussed by Senator Girão and Representative Burlison at the press conference, could represent a path toward the kind of documentation the case has always lacked.

Colonel Claussen's identification of specific paper trails, Air Mobility Command records, international flight plans, refueling logs, that would confirm or deny a U.S. military retrieval operation provides a concrete investigative roadmap for anyone with the authority to follow it.

Whether the evidence will surface before the witnesses, now aging into their fifties, sixties, and beyond, are no longer able to tell their stories is an open question. Dr. Marcos Vinico Neves, the physician who reportedly treated the creature at Hospital Regional, died in 2018. Pedro Luiz Aguiar, the chief of police in Três Corações who allegedly witnessed the creature, died in December 2025. Roger Leir, who wrote the first major English-language account, passed away in 2014. Graham Birdsall, who compiled the earliest Western timeline, died in 2003.

The clock is ticking.

Conclusion

Thirty years after the events of January 1996, Varginha remains one of the most thoroughly investigated and hotly debated UFO cases in history. It has everything: multiple independent witnesses, specific physical descriptions that remain consistent across decades, credible medical professionals willing to stake their reputations on their testimony, a documented death under suspicious circumstances, evidence of record tampering, reports of witness intimidation, and an alleged American retrieval operation that might still be traceable through military records.

What it does not have is proof. Not the kind of proof that would survive peer review, not the kind that would settle a court case, not the kind that would force the Brazilian or American governments to acknowledge what happened.

But the witnesses are still talking. New ones are still coming forward. And for the first time in three decades, the people who say they saw something in Varginha are being heard not just by UFO researchers and documentary filmmakers, but by the legislative bodies of two nations.

Something happened in Varginha in January 1996. What exactly that something was remains, for now, an open question. But after thirty years of silence, threats, ridicule, and denial, the question is being asked louder than ever.

If you’ve ever tried to dig into Project Blue Book case files, you know the pain: thousands of scans, inconsistent filenames, and lots of “where do I even start?” energy.

So I built a thing to make it easier to explore:

It’s still very much a work in progress (and yes, there are bugs), but it’s already the easiest way I’ve found to actually research Blue Book cases without getting lost in a maze of PDFs.

What was Project Blue Book?

Project Blue Book was the U.S. Air Force’s official UFO investigation program, active from 1952 to 1969.

In simple terms: reports would come in from the public, pilots, police, radar operators, military personnel, etc., and Blue Book investigators would try to determine what happened. A lot of cases ended up as mundane explanations (aircraft, balloons, Venus, temperature inversions… the usual suspects). Some were chalked up to “insufficient information.” And a small number remained “unidentified.”

Blue Book is often remembered as a debunking effort, and honestly, that’s not wrong. It was largely designed to reduce public anxiety and close out cases with conventional explanations whenever possible.

But one of the most interesting parts of the story is the investigator who became synonymous with the entire program: Dr. J. Allen Hynek.

Hynek started out as a skeptic—brought in as a scientific consultant in part to help explain sightings away. Over time, after years of reviewing cases (including ones that didn’t fit neatly into simple explanations), his position evolved. By the end of his involvement with the subject, he became one of the strongest voices arguing that the UFO phenomenon deserved serious, scientific attention.

Why this site exists

The Blue Book records are already public and available online via the National Archives (and mirrored on sites like Fold3, Archive.org, etc.). But the problem I kept running into is that browsing and searching those sites feels slow and clunky—especially if you’re trying to search across the whole collection, follow patterns, or jump between related reports.

I wanted one place where I could search across the documents like a normal person.

So I built an archive that includes most of the Project 10073 Record Cards (the one-page “summary sheets” investigators filled out for each report), plus some other related Blue Book / UFO documents.

If you’ve never seen the cards: they usually include the date, location, witness info, what was reported, and the official explanation or conclusion. The usual stuff shows up a lot: Venus, aircraft, balloons… and of course, swamp gas 😅

I ran roughly 6,000 reports through OCR so you can search the actual content (locations, dates, descriptions, weird phrases, whatever). Some scans are rough, so OCR quality varies—and the worst ones will be imperfect.

Introduction

In my previous post “Was Flight MH370 Teleported?”, I broke down two viral videos that appear to show MH370 being surrounded by glowing orbs before vanishing in a flash of light. Whether you believe those videos are real or fake, one thing is clear: they sparked renewed interest in alternative theories about what happened to Flight 370.

But here’s the thing: whether those videos are real or not, there should be physical evidence. An event violent enough to make a Boeing 777 disappear or crash would almost certainly generate acoustic signatures detectable by underwater sensors.

The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) operates a network of highly sensitive underwater hydrophones throughout the world's oceans. These hydrophones are designed to detect nuclear explosions, but they can also pick up aircraft impacts, underwater explosions, and other violent events.

So what did those hydrophones record on March 8, 2014?

The answer is complicated. They recorded something. But more importantly, they recorded nothing during a critical 25-minute window at the station closest to Diego Garcia.

The Players: CTBTO Hydrophone Stations

The CTBTO operates hydroacoustic monitoring stations throughout the Indian Ocean. Three are particularly relevant to MH370:

Each station consists of three hydrophones arranged in a triangular configuration, allowing researchers to determine both the bearing and approximate distance of acoustic events.

Diego Garcia is the location of HA08. It is also a remote coral atoll hosting a major U.S. military installation, Naval Support Facility Diego Garcia, which is shrouded in secrecy. The island has a 12,000-foot runway capable of handling any aircraft in the world.

Remember from Part 1: the coordinates embedded in the “satellite” video are approximately -8.834301, 93.19492, which places the supposed event south of the Nicobar Islands. Diego Garcia sits at approximately 7.3°S, 72.4°E. The distance between these two points is roughly 2,300 km.

Anomaly #1: The 25-Minute Data Gap

What Happened

At 03:07 UTC on March 8, 2014, all three hydrophones at the Diego Garcia station (HA08s) simultaneously stopped recording. They remained offline for exactly 25 minutes.

This is documented in a peer-reviewed paper by Dr. Usama Kadri of Cardiff University, published in Scientific Reports (Nature):

“A fifth signal appears at 3:07... This signal probably indicates restarting the system after it was shutdown for 25 minutes, i.e. there is missing data in these specific CTBTO recordings.”

Why This Matters

Dr. Kadri explicitly addresses the suspicious nature of this gap:

“Due to the sensitivity of the recorded data, it is unlikely that the three hydrophones on HA08s had a simultaneous technical failure and the reason behind the shut down is to-date unknown.”

He then offers a possible explanation:

“A violent nearby activity (including impact, explosion) could have resulted in a shutdown of the system.”

Let that sink in. A scientist publishing in one of the world's most prestigious journals is stating on the record that:

1. A simultaneous failure of all three hydrophones is “unlikely”
2. The shutdown remains “unexplained” by the CTBTO
3. A violent nearby event, such as an aircraft impact or explosion, could cause such a shutdown

The Timeline and the Videos

The official narrative states that MH370’s final satellite communication occurred at 00:19 UTC on March 8, 2014. According to the mainstream account, the aircraft is believed to have crashed when it ran out of fuel over the southern Indian Ocean after turning and flying south.

Here is where it gets interesting. If the mainstream narrative is wrong and, instead of turning south, MH370 continued from its final reported coordinates toward Diego Garcia, then plotting its trajectory using the coordinates from the video (-8.834301, 93.19492) places the aircraft in that area sometime between 00:30 and 01:30 UTC. At a distance of about 2,100 km, the primary acoustic signal would reach Diego Garcia after roughly 10–25 minutes, depending on the propagation path: faster along the sea floor at about 3,350 m/s and slower through the water column at about 1,500 m/s. This means any acoustic signature from the event would have been recorded by Diego Garcia’s hydrophones sometime between 01:10 and 01:55 UTC, well before the 03:07 data gap.

So what happened at 03:07? If the acoustic signal had already arrived and been recorded around 01:30-02:00 UTC, the data gap doesn't represent missing evidence – it represents evidence that may have been deleted. You don't preemptively shut down a recording system before incriminating data arrives. You shut it down after you realize what's been captured. The 25-minute window – just enough time to review and scrub recordings – looks less like a technical failure and more like a cleanup operation.

The data gap starts at 03:07 UTC. Right in the middle of that window.

Coincidence?

Anomaly #2: Diego Garcia Data “Dismissed” as Too Noisy

The Convenient Excuse

When the U.S. Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) analyzed CTBTO hydrophone data for MH370, they focused almost exclusively on the Cape Leeuwin (HA01) station. The Diego Garcia data? Dismissed.

From the official LANL report:

“Analysis of the data from these stations shows... large amplitude repeating signals at H08 that obscure any possible arrivals.”

The “noise” was attributed to seismic survey ships operating in the region. This explanation has been accepted uncritically by most researchers.

Dr. Alec Duncan's Assessment

Dr. Alec Duncan of Curtin University, who led the Australian acoustic analysis effort, also found the Diego Garcia data “unusable”:

“Duncan also analysed data from the other [station], off Diego Garcia island in the middle of the Indian Ocean, but found nothing. The data were too polluted by noises from seismic surveys, he says.”

The Signal That Pointed Northwest

Here is what makes this dismissal suspicious. Duncan did find a promising signal at Cape Leeuwin, one that pointed to a location northwest of the official search area:

“The sound is believed to have originated somewhere along a strip running to the northwest of the Indian Ocean. That is out of the range of the current search.”

Curtin University's refined location estimate (September 2014) placed the signal origin at 2.11°N, 69.31°E, west of the Maldives, much closer to Diego Garcia than to the 7th arc search area.

This location is roughly 1,100 km from Diego Garcia. And it is within the general region suggested by the video coordinates.

This finding was dismissed as “inconsistent with other data about aircraft position,” meaning the satellite handshake data that forms the entire basis for the southern search.

Anomaly #3: Military Activity Detected During the Critical Window

What the Hydrophones Recorded

Kadri's 2019 paper documents military activity detected by the Diego Garcia hydrophones during the critical timeframe:

“Analyses of signals recorded at station HA08s... were more challenging, partially due to disturbances in the recordings that are believed to have been caused by military action in the region.”

The military signals were detected at two specific bearings:

• 219.2° from HA08s (southwest toward Mauritius/Madagascar)
• 309.7° from HA08s (northwest toward Maldives/India)

These signals were recorded “intermittently” between 23:00 UTC on March 7 and 04:00 UTC on March 8, precisely the window when MH370 would have been in the area.

Notice the sequence immediately after the system came back online: three signals at nearly identical bearings (~170°) detected within 8 minutes. What did the hydrophones capture the moment they resumed recording?

Kadri notes:

“Note that bearings of signals HA30 and HA32 fall within the military action bearings, so it is also possible that the signals are associated with the military action.”

Connecting to the Videos

In Part 1, I discussed how the videos appear to show military surveillance footage, specifically what looks like Gorgon Stare imagery from an MQ-9 Reaper drone. The second “drone” video shows the same event from a different angle.

If the U.S. military was operating surveillance drones in that area, and if something happened to MH370 that they witnessed (or caused), the “military action” detected by the hydrophones could be related.

Anomaly #4: Cocos Keeling Infrasound Data Never Released

The Silent Witnesses

Cocos Keeling Island sits in the Indian Ocean between the Maldives and Australia. It hosts an array of eight infrasound recorders (station IM.I06) that were continuously collecting data during MH370's disappearance.

This data has never been made public.

From 370Location.org:

“There is an array of eight infrasound recorders at Cocos Keeling West Island that was continuously collecting data during the flight of MH370. That data has been unavailable to the public.”

Two days after MH370 disappeared, the head of the CTBTO noted during a press briefing that their infrasound monitoring stations “would be most suitable for detecting an explosion or impact of the aircraft.” One day later, they released a report claiming no infrasound detections were found.

The Convenient Data Cutoff

In 2017, the CTBTO began releasing infrasound and hydrophone data to public seismic networks, including data from prior years.

For the Cocos Island array, that dataset starts on April 4, 2014.

MH370 disappeared on March 8, 2014.

The publicly released data begins exactly 27 days after the plane vanished. Everything before that remains classified.

The Time Zone Error That Invalidated the Analysis

In May 2014, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) produced a poster report examining whether the Cocos Island infrasound array could detect aircraft. Their approach was sound: check whether the twice-daily A320 flights to and from Cocos Island airport were detectable on the infrasound array located just a few kilometers from the runway.

They found no infrasound events matching the known aircraft activity. This negative finding became the basis for dismissing further inquiry into the Cocos data.

There was just one problem: they made a time zone error.

From 370Location.org's detailed analysis:

“Ultimately, a simple time zone error flawed the analysis. While the poster listed the correct offsets for local time, UTC+6:30 for Cocos CCK and UTC+7:00 for Christmas CXT, those offsets were erroneously added instead of subtracted from local time to get UTC. The result was that the infrasound was being examined for expected flight traffic in the middle of the night when the airport was closed.”

Let that sink in. The analysis that was used to dismiss the Cocos Island infrasound data was looking at the wrong time window entirely. They were searching for aircraft signatures at 2 AM when no planes were flying.

Terminal departures from Cocos are scheduled for 13:43 and 15:59 local time, which is 07:13 and 09:29 UTC. The LLNL poster incorrectly listed these as 22:37 and 00:50 UTC, off by nearly 12 hours.

The Array Can Detect Aircraft

Independent researcher Ed Anderson later proved that the Cocos Island infrasound array absolutely can detect jet aircraft. Using publicly available data from April 2019 (after the March 2014 data was conveniently excluded), he demonstrated successful detection of commercial flights:

“This is firm confirmation that the Cocos Island infrasound array is capable of picking up jet traffic details.”

The 2019 analysis showed the array detecting:

• Jet engine throttle-up on the runway
• Aircraft movement down the runway
• Takeoff bearing and heading
• Approaches from 25 km away

The Signal at 22:22:22 UTC

Here is where it gets interesting. Despite the flawed official analysis, independent examination of available seismometer data from Cocos Island (station II.COCO) revealed something:

“The seismometer shows that there were no other significant acoustic events there besides the 22:22:22 candidate during the time between the fourth and fifth pings.”

A higher resolution sample from one of the infrasound sensors published in the LLNL poster shows a signal peak at 22:46:40 UTC.

This timing closely matches when MH370 would have crossed near Cocos Island if it flew toward Diego Garcia rather than south toward the 7th arc.

“The Cocos Island infrasound array appears to be perfectly viable for detecting a flyby and confirming the nature of the event detected by the island seismometer.”

Why This Matters for the Videos

Remember: if MH370 flew toward the coordinates shown in the videos (-8.834°S, 93.195°E), it would have passed near Cocos Keeling Island. The flight path from last radar contact to the video coordinates runs almost directly over Cocos.

The infrasound array would have detected the aircraft's engine noise. A Doppler shift in the signal would indicate direction of travel.

If the raw infrasound data from March 7-8, 2014 showed MH370 heading northwest toward Diego Garcia rather than south toward the 7th arc, it would directly contradict the official narrative.

Instead, we have:

• Data conveniently classified until April 4, 2014
• An official analysis invalidated by a basic time zone error
• Independent proof that the array CAN detect aircraft
• A suspicious signal at 22:22-22:46 UTC that was never properly investigated

The Pattern of Suppression

When you step back and look at the acoustic evidence holistically, a troubling pattern emerges:

Every piece of evidence that could point toward Diego Garcia has been either dismissed, classified, or left unexplained.

The “Javanomaly”: A Strong Unexplained Signal

Independent researchers have identified additional signals that warrant investigation. One of the most compelling is what 370Location.org calls the “Javanomaly”:

“A very strong MH370 candidate signal was reported here a year ago, arriving at the Diego Garcia H08 hydrophone array from the direction of Java. The T-wave arrival is far stronger than a later M4.4 quake near Java and four times stronger on local seismometers than a nearby M4.1 quake.”

What makes this signal suspicious:

“Despite the stronger signals, this event was not included in earthquake catalogs like the others. Analysis of nearby seismometers places the origin as 8.36S 107.92E directly on the 7th Arc at 1:15:18 UTC, almost an hour after the expected impact time.”

Tying It Together: What the Hydrophone Data Means for the Videos

If the videos fromPart 1 are real, they show MH370 being surrounded by orbs and disappearing in a flash of light. Such an event would generate multiple types of acoustic signatures:

1. The initial event: Whatever energy was released when the orbs activated would create a pressure wave
2. Aircraft impact/displacement: The sudden movement or destruction of a 200-ton aircraft would generate acoustic signals
3. Possible implosion: If parts of the aircraft sank to depth, implosion of pressurized compartments would create additional signals

The timeline fits uncomfortably well:

The acoustic evidence would have already been recorded by the time the system went offline. The data gap occurs not when evidence was arriving, but potentially when it was being erased.

What Would Prove or Disprove This Theory?

Several pieces of evidence could definitively address the connection between the videos and the hydrophone data:

1. The Missing 25 Minutes

The CTBTO should release whatever diagnostic data exists from the HA08s station between 03:07 and 03:32 UTC. If the system was truly “shutdown” by a violent event, there should be evidence of what caused it.

2. Cocos Keeling Infrasound Data

If MH370 flew toward the video coordinates (near the Nicobar Islands), infrasound would have detected it. Release the data.

3. Full Diego Garcia Recordings

Not just the data that was deemed “too noisy,” but all recordings from 23:00 March 7 to 04:00 March 8, with proper signal filtering applied.

4. HA04 Crozet Islands Cross-Reference

A third station could triangulate any signals and provide much more precise location data. This analysis has apparently never been done.

5. Raw Satellite Footage

If the U.S. military was operating Gorgon Stare surveillance in the area (as the videos suggest), they have the original, uncompressed footage. Release it.

Conclusion: The Sound of Silence

The hydroacoustic evidence surrounding MH370's disappearance is characterized not by what was detected, but by what was silenced.

In Part 1, I laid out the evidence for and against the authenticity of the videos showing MH370 surrounded by orbs. I noted the extraordinary technical details, the suspicious “debunks” that seemed planted, and the connections to Diego Garcia.

Now we have another piece of the puzzle: 25 minutes of missing data from the hydrophone station closest to Diego Garcia, occurring exactly when acoustic evidence of a violent event would be expected to arrive.

Dr. Kadri's peer-reviewed research explicitly states that the simultaneous shutdown of all three hydrophones is “unlikely” to be a technical failure. He suggests a “violent nearby activity (including impact, explosion)” could cause such a shutdown.

The question is not whether the evidence exists. The question is why it has been systematically dismissed, classified, or erased.

If those videos are real, if MH370 was intercepted by some form of advanced technology, the hydrophone data gap is exactly what you would expect. Not evidence of what happened, but evidence of a cover-up.

Ten years after MH370 vanished, 239 families still have no answers. Perhaps those answers lie not in the depths of the southern Indian Ocean, but in the 25 minutes of silence from a hydrophone station in the shadow of a secret military base.

It claims to be a confession from a former government–adjacent molecular biologist. The author said they had spent years dissecting and characterizing the bodies of “Exo-Biospheric-Organisms” (EBOs) in a secret lab buried under Fort Detrick, Maryland.

Within hours the post was removed and the account vanished, which only made the story spread faster.

Copies of the text were archived and reposted across the web, from mirrors to UFO blogs and forums.

The result is one of the most elaborate “alien biology” narratives to hit the internet in years: part lab notebook, part theology, part science-fiction.

This article breaks down what the EBO leaker actually claimed, how it fits with real-world biology and facilities, why it grabbed so many people, and how plausible any of it really is.

Where the Story Came From

The original post appeared on /r/aliens in early July 2023 and was titled:

“From the late 2000s to the mid-2010s, I worked as a molecular biologist for a national security contractor in a program to study Exo-Biospheric-Organisms (EBO).”

The account:

• Claimed to be a PhD-level molecular biologist
• Described working for a “national security contractor”
• Said the work was done in a restricted lab space at Fort Detrick, Maryland
• Identified the operator as Battelle National Biodefense Institute (BNBI)

BNBI is a real organization. It manages the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center (NBACC) at Fort Detrick for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. NBACC is a high-containment biodefense facility built in the mid-2000s to study biological threats and forensic analysis of biocrimes.

So at minimum, the leaker anchored their story to a real, high-security lab with a plausible mandate for weird biology.

The author framed the post as a one-way leak: they explicitly said they would not testify to the Senate or talk to AARO, and that they possessed no evidence beyond the text itself. They described this as a compromise between their moral urge to “tell humanity” and their desire not to get themselves or their family into danger.

Who the Leaker Claims to Be

The author’s self-portrait is deliberately fuzzy:

• PhD in molecular biology
• Recruited informally at a scientific conference after chatting with a senior scientist
• Put through several increasingly “suspicious” interviews where scientific expertise became less relevant
• Required to sign a very detailed NDA, explained in person by a lawyer-type

Once hired, they say their first weeks were spent in a basement archive room at Fort Detrick, reading internal reports, memos, SOPs and briefings on EBOs: their biology, diet, religion, culture, and so on.

The scientific structure they describe is familiar to anyone who’s seen a large biomedical program:

• ~20 PhD-level scientists doing hands-on lab work
• 4 senior scientists who design assays and supervise
• 1 director who sets priorities and is rarely on site
• Security guards from contractors
• No janitors or support staff; scientists do their own cleaning and maintenance

Internet access is restricted to senior staff, with an internal intranet for bioinformatics.

So far, nothing exotic: the weird part is what they say they were studying.

Inside the Alleged EBO Program

The stated goal of the program is to characterize the genome and proteome of EBOs: to decode their DNA and catalog the proteins they make.

According to the post:

• The lab runs at BSL-3 for anything involving EBO samples or cell culture, with a connected BSL-2 area for most assays and normal cell lines.
• The BSL-3 section includes a freezer room and a dedicated EBO cell culture space.
• Four incomplete EBO bodies are stored in horizontal freezers at –80 °C, vacuum-bagged in a humidity-controlled environment. All show major traumatic injuries.

The author says they never saw live EBOs, only carcasses and derived cell lines.

One of the key tools is an EBO epithelial cell line called EPI-G11, allegedly developed by another team. This line supposedly:

• Can be transfected with EBO genes via a gene gun (other methods kill it or fail)
• Enters exponential growth in response to fetal bovine serum, like many eukaryotic cell lines
• Is used as a platform to overexpress and purify EBO proteins for analysis

So the story is framed much like a very niche, very classified biotech program: nothing magical, just everyday molecular biology applied to something extraordinary.

The Genetics of the EBOs

The genetics section is what drew a lot of scientists’ attention, because it is very detailed and uses real concepts correctly.

According to the leaker, EBOs:

• Use DNA as their genetic material
• Are eukaryotic (cells have nuclei)
• Have 16 circular chromosomes
• Have a genome that’s much smaller and more streamlined than ours

Circular chromosomes are common in bacteria and some single-celled eukaryotes, but are not seen in known animals on Earth. That alone makes the design odd: you’d essentially have an animal-like organism with microbial-style genome architecture.

The EBO genome is described as having:

1. Highly uniform intergenic regions (“junk DNA”)

   • The non-coding regions between genes are nearly identical in sequence and length across the genome.
   • This would be extremely unusual in natural evolution, where these regions are messy, repetitive, and full of ancient molecular debris.

2. A structured Tri-Palindromic Region (TPR) in front of every gene

   • A 134-base sequence containing three palindromic segments separated by spacers.
   • Inside the TPR are a 4-base “chromosome address” (unique per chromosome) and a 64-base “gene address” (unique per gene across the entire genome).
   • In other words, each gene carries a built-in machine-readable positional address.

The leaker suggests that this TPR architecture allows incredibly precise genetic engineering: external tools could, in principle, seek out and edit any gene by targeting its address, essentially treating the genome as a keyed database.

The EBO genome is also said to contain:

• Many genes analogous to human genes
• Some sequences that match known human or animal genes nucleotide-for-nucleotide
• A large set of genes with no known terrestrial homology

This mishmash is offered as proof that EBOs are chimeras: organisms built by combining Earth-derived genes with unknown ones from another biosphere.

From a storytelling perspective, it’s clever. From a lab perspective, it raises questions: if whoever built these organisms can engineer such an elegant addressing scheme, why are they brute-copy-pasting mammalian genes instead of designing their own equivalents? The mixture of very polished design and crude “copy-and-paste” feels conceptually odd.

Anatomy & Physiology: The “Grey” Worker Body

Morphologically, the EBOs described in the leak line up closely with pop-culture “greys”:

• Height around 150 cm
• Enlarged head with huge, dark eyes
• Slender neck and torso
• Four-fingered hands with long digits
• Two narrow toes per foot (each toe made from two fused digits)
• No genitals, navel, nipples, or anus

Some of the more striking anatomical claims:

Skin & Excretion

• The typical “grey” skin is said to be a biosynthetic film, like an environmental suit tightly bonded to the body.
• Underneath, the skin is pale, hairless and covered with countless pores connected to glands.
• Instead of urination or defecation, metabolic waste is excreted as an ammonia-rich fluid through these pores, where it evaporates and cools the body.
• A combined hepato-renal organ functions as both liver and kidney, filtering blood and pushing waste into a branching system that feeds the pores in all four limbs.

This design doubles the waste system as a kind of sweat-based cooling mechanism and explains the repeated mention of a strong ammonia stench when the protective film is removed.

Digestive System

The digestive system is extremely simplified:

• The mouth is a narrow slit, with no teeth or tongue.
• There is a pseudo-stomach acting only as a reservoir.

Given this, the leaker concludes that EBOs can only consume liquid nutrition, some kind of sugar- and protein-rich broth, likely with high copper content to match the rest of their physiology.

Circulatory & Respiratory Systems

• The heart is four-chambered, similar in basic layout to ours.
• Lungs have unidirectional airflow (like birds), which is more efficient and fits with the high metabolic demands of their oversized brain.
• The blood is brownish and plasma-rich, with high metal ion concentrations, especially copper.
• Red blood cells allegedly bind copper as well as iron, possibly to help neutralize the large ammonia load.

Skeleton & Muscles

• Bones are collagen- and hydroxyapatite-based like ours, but the marrow is replaced by copper oxide crystals.
• Bone remodeling cells (osteoclasts) appear absent, suggesting fixed, non-adapting bones.
• Muscle mass is low, especially in the limbs and torso, with a dominance of slow-twitch fibers.

The overall picture is of a physically weak, highly specialized body optimized for controlled environments and cognitive work, not for survival in a natural ecosystem.

Nervous System & Brain

• The brain is “tetraspheric” (four main lobes) with a central lobe acting like a combined brainstem and cerebellum.
• Volume is about 20% larger than a human of the same height.
• Gyrication (folding) and glia-to-neuron ratios are both higher than in humans.
• Distinct nodules on the central lobe show “biological circuitry” and are suspected to be involved in interfacing with their technology. Mapping the proteome of these nodules is described as a priority of the program.

The author also speculates about possible artificial molecular machines in the body that might depend on copper, though they admit none have been observed.

The EBO “Soul Field” Religion

One of the more surprising parts of the leak is the claim that EBOs have a sophisticated metaphysics centered on a “soul field.”

According to the documents the leaker says they read:

• Consciousness is not a property of individual beings, but an emergent manifestation of a fundamental field pervading the universe, analogous to gravity.
• As life becomes more abundant and complex, the structure of this field becomes more ordered and information-rich.
• When sentient life appears, the field begins to express itself through those minds, which then feed back into the field through their experiences.
• Over time, this positive feedback pushes the field toward a critical threshold, culminating in an apotheosis event whose nature is unclear.

This worldview allegedly leads to:

• Little fear of death (the individual dissolves, but their experiences persist in the field)
• A culture that prioritizes the field’s long-term evolution over individual rights or well-being
• A mission to seed, shape, and shepherd life across the cosmos in service of this future apotheosis

In other words, the EBOs see themselves not as conquerors or tourists, but as cosmic gardeners pushing the universe toward some informational singularity.

From a narrative standpoint, this is very on-brand: detached, utilitarian “caretakers” who treat us like lab animals while insisting it’s for the greater metaphysical good.

Why This Story Blew Up

There are a few reasons this particular leak went viral:

1. It’s extremely detailed and technically literate. The post reads like a cross between an SOP and a review article, especially in the genetics section. That sets it apart from the usual “I saw a light in the sky” stuff.

2. It hooks into a real facility. Fort Detrick and BNBI/NBACC are genuine national-security biotech operations, with a mandate to handle exotic pathogens and high-risk agents. Placing the story there gives it a veneer of plausibility.

3. It fits the cultural moment. The post arrived amid UAP hearings, whistleblower news cycles, and increasing mainstream coverage of “non-human biologics” claims. UFO-adjacent media and YouTube channels picked it up almost immediately.

4. The deletion drama. The author complained in the post that their comments were being removed; shortly after, the whole account disappeared, and the main post was taken down. Mirrored copies and reposts quickly proliferated, which is exactly how modern myth-making works online.

Put bluntly: this is exactly the kind of story built to thrive on the internet. Just enough real-world scaffolding to feel grounded, just enough mystery and removal to scream “they’re trying to hide this.”

Does Any of This Actually Hold Up?

Short answer: there is no evidence beyond the text itself, and the community that’s looked at it most closely tends to treat it as a very well-crafted piece of creative writing.

Longer answer, broken out:

1. Facilities: Plausible Scene, Missing Evidence

NBACC/BNBI at Fort Detrick is real, and its mission is genuinely about biodefense and high-containment experimental work for DHS.

That makes it a credible setting. But:

• There is no independent indication that NBACC is working on alien bodies.
• Naming your actual former facility in public while claiming to be terrified of government retaliation is a strange choice.

If the story were true, investigators wouldn’t have many possible starting points.

2. Genetics: Elegant, Maybe Too Elegant

Genetics-literate readers have pointed out that:

• A DNA-based alien with eukaryotic cells is possible if there’s some shared ancestry or directed panspermia, but it’s far from guaranteed. The story glosses over how unlikely that convergence would be.
• Circular chromosomes are not used by any known multicellular animals; they appear in bacteria and some single-celled eukaryotes. To then combine that with human-like genes and regulatory architecture is an eccentric design choice.
• A fixed, uniform intergenic spacing and a full addressing scheme in every gene (the TPR) is very “engineer-brain”: more like how a software developer would design a neat database than how evolution actually works.

The system is internally consistent and imaginative, but that actually pushes it toward feeling like a thought experiment or LARP rather than an authentic lab leak.

3. Physiology: Exotic but Suspiciously Human-Centric

Several skeptics have noted that the EBO body plan is essentially “human, but gamified”:

• Same gross anatomy (bipedal, same basic organs) with some removed for effect (no genitals, no anus, simplified digestion).
• A few knobs turned for sci-fi flavor (tetraspheric brain, copper crystals in bones, ammonia excretion).

There’s also a broader conceptual issue: if this is an engineered, disposable worker caste designed for specific tasks in controlled environments, why base it so heavily on terrestrial human physiology at all? Why mimic our skeletal muscles, heart layout, and limb structure, instead of designing bodies purely optimized for whatever they’re supposed to do?

4. The Leaker’s Behavior

The author:

• Claims to have read deeply sensitive archival material and worked directly with classified biological samples.
• Publicly names the facility operator and location (BNBI at Fort Detrick).
• Declares they will never present evidence, testify, or otherwise substantiate anything because it “sounds like a honey trap.”

So they’re willing to expose a specific facility, but not willing to provide even a single anonymized document, redacted image, or independent detail that could be cross-checked. It’s an odd line to draw if you assume they are genuinely concerned about operational security.

5. Community Reception

Places that specialize in skeptical analysis have mostly filed this under “interesting, but almost certainly fiction.” Common points:

• There is no evidence to “debunk”; it’s just a block of text.
• The aliens are perhaps too conveniently similar to humans, with missing parts and tweaks that align with narrative needs rather than evolutionary ones.
• The religion section and “soul field” philosophy read like speculative metaphysics layered onto the biology for extra flavor.

Even relatively neutral commentators who enjoy the story tend to conclude that it’s either a carefully constructed LARP or an elaborate science-fiction world-building exercise that escaped into the wild.

So What Do We Do With Stories Like This?

If you treat this as literal truth, you’re left with a fairly bleak picture:

• Disposable engineered beings with no independent survival capacity
• A “caretaker” species whose theology justifies total disregard for individual life
• A clandestine human program dissecting their corpses in a government lab

If you treat it as fiction, it’s still doing something interesting:

• It serves as a thought experiment in xenobiology and engineered genomes.
• It sketches a plausible near-future level of bioengineering where genomes are fully addressable and castes are designed, not bred.
• It reflects our current anxieties: about AI, about being someone else’s lab rats, about institutions hiding world-shaking truths.

Crucially, nothing in the leak advances us one millimeter toward actual evidence of non-human life. It’s text. No tissue samples, no sequences we can independently analyze, no corroborating whistleblowers from the same alleged program.

By contrast, the real search for life elsewhere is happening in painfully uncinematic ways: spectroscopy of exoplanet atmospheres, analysis of strange chemistry in our own solar system, modeling biosignatures, and so on. Those efforts move slowly, publish their data, and don’t vanish after a Reddit mod hits “remove.”

Conclusion

The EBO scientist leaker story is a perfect artifact of our time:

• Technically literate enough to hook scientists and engineers
• Rooted in real national-security infrastructure to feel grounded
• Infused with metaphysical lore to satisfy the spiritual angle
• Carefully starved of evidence so it can never be definitively disproven

Is it true? There’s no solid reason to think so, and several reasons to suspect it’s not. But as a piece of modern myth-making, it’s undeniably effective.

Whether you file it under “credible leak,” “fiction with homework,” or “elaborate LARP,” the safest stance is the boring one: enjoy the speculation, keep your critical thinking switched on, and don’t confuse narrative coherence with actual proof.

If someone ever shows up with an actual EBO genome in FASTA format, then it’s time to panic.

In April 2023, an anonymous poster appeared on 4chan's /x/ board with a simple opening line:

“I have intimate knowledge of what the US currently knows about UFOs minus the last two years.”

He claimed to be a former insider with access to UFO crash recoveries and classified programs, now undergoing chemotherapy for liver cancer. Facing the possibility of not having much time left, he chose the most chaotic confession booth imaginable: a 4chan thread.

Over the course of two lengthy sessions spanning nearly two weeks, this individual answered hundreds of questions with an unusual level of consistency and detail that set their posts apart from the typical “LARP” (Live Action Role Play) that plagues anonymous forums.

Whether genuine insider or elaborate fiction, these threads offer one of the most comprehensive, internally consistent accounts of alleged government UFO knowledge ever posted online. They have already become a notable node in modern UFO lore.

This is their story.

The Start

The first post arrived on April 24, 2023, with five core claims that would frame everything that followed:

1. UFOs are primarily unmanned drones

2. UFOs are built to specification each time they are deployed

3. UFOs are created by a mobile construction facility hiding in the ocean

4. This construction facility destroys anything that approaches it

5. The U.S. believes this facility has been active on Earth for at least 100 years, possibly much longer

These claims immediately distinguished the poster from typical UFO narratives. No talk of crashed saucers from Zeta Reticuli, no galactic federations, no channeled messages from Ashtar Command. Instead, the picture that emerged was almost industrial: a manufacturing operation, hidden beneath the waves, churning out specialized drones for specific missions before recycling them back into raw materials.

“Atlantis”: The Underwater UFO Factory

Perhaps the most striking element of the whistleblower's account is the construction facility itself, jokingly dubbed “Atlantis” by older team members. When asked what it looked like, the poster provided surprising detail.

Q: What does it look like?

A: Shaped like an extremely large UFO but more of a “burger” design. Almost never leaves the Atlantic Ocean, in fact it will sit through hurricanes. No visible weapons or “cockpit” from sat footage. It also does not use any lights. The main construction facility does not rust or deteriorate from what we can tell.

The method of tracking this facility raised eyebrows:

Q: How do you track it?

A: We rely mostly on detecting the gravity it produces. It normally doesn't produce heat outright. When it does we believe it's in the process of construction since a small heat buildup can be detected when a craft returns or exits.

But the most chilling detail concerned what happens when humans get too close to the underwater “UFO Factory”

Q: What happens when you approach it?

A: The last unit we saw approach the facility didn't even have time to communicate they were being attacked before it was over. At one point we deployed fighters and a sub with serious intent. Everything except the sub was lost. This weapon destroys the matter it hits entirely. It also shits on anything electronic in the vicinity.

When craft return to this facility, heat signatures suggest they're smelted back down into component parts. This recycling operation explains why so few intact craft are ever recovered:

Q: Do the UAPs return to the manufacturing unit?

A: Yes, some come in and leave the planet but very rarely. Based on heat signatures likely smelted back down into parts. It feels more like a carrier but with construction capability.

The poster also suspects this may not be the only facility. With increasing attention on polar regions, he believes other units might exist, including one in the Arctic.

The Craft Themselves

The whistleblower's description of the craft challenges some popular UFO imagery while confirming others.

On shapes:

Q: What shapes have you seen?

A: Things like triangles and hard-edged squares don't exist. Pill shapes are extremely sought after, some we think are “freighters.” Cigar shaped are very rare, we were told finding one would be career changing.

The materials presented unique challenges:

Q: What are they made of?

A: An alloy that we cannot reproduce but only repurpose. This alloy is kind of like a “film” that fits over the frame of the craft. One of the main problems when repurposing these alloys is getting them hot enough. They absorb heat very well.

On the power source, the poster confirmed a name familiar to anyone who has followed UFO lore:

Q: What powers them?

A: The power source is E115. It produces its own gravity field. Bob Lazar handled E115 which was already pulled out which is rare and weird. Protocol now is that only one person is allowed to handle E115. We still have trouble producing this shit too.

When someone pointed out that Element 115 decays in milliseconds under lab conditions, the response was blunt:

Q: Element 115 nuclei lasts for milliseconds before disintegrating under lab conditions.

A: Correct. Still a massive problem.

The interiors matched what you might expect from craft not designed for human proportions:

Q: What does the interior look like?

A: Always cramped and hard to stand fully upright in. For reference I'm 5'8. There is almost never a storage facility unless dedicated to something for the craft. Tools are not freely placed around and have dedicated placement.

On stealth capabilities:

Q: Do they have stealth capabilities?

A: Maybe 1 in 20 has stealth technology. These crafts are so rare we actually almost never see them crash because we can't track them.

Types of UFO Lights and What They Mean

One of the most practical revelations concerned the meaning of different light colors observed on UFOs:

Q: What about the lights on craft?

A: Orange is a mineral/bio-scanning mode. Since most people see orange up close you're likely being scouted/selected for an abduction. It can see your heart beating and even the valves pushing the blood inside. Red lights are defense mode, the craft wants to leave and has to keep an eye on you. Red also allows very accurate calculation of distance and can detect hostility based on facial expression. If a weapon is fired the “beam” is white.

This color-coding system, if accurate, provides witnesses with a framework for understanding what they're experiencing during an encounter. Orange means you're being studied. Red means they want out. White means something is being destroyed.

The Occupants: “Earth’s Zookeepers”

The beings operating these craft match the classic “Gray” description:

Q: Are “aliens” human or humanoid?

A: Humanoid, very humanoid. They are smaller than humans and look like your typical “Gray” aliens. Holes for ears and they can look at very bright objects without being blinded. I've never seen one move their mouth.

On the question of gender:

Q: Are they male or female?

A: We haven't seen any females. We think it's mainly a military operation or they just don't have them hence male only.

When asked if a human could win a physical confrontation:

Q: Could a human physically best them?

A: I'm not an expert but probably. Their size and frame are one reason they don't make it through crashes often.

But the most memorable exchange came when someone asked what they think of us:

Q: What do they think of us?

A: One of the officials in charge said something that stuck with me: “They act like keepers of a zoo uninterested in the daily life of wildlife until there's a problem.” They cut their losses when crashes are recovered, same with personnel. Zoo keepers aren't friends with the animals.

When pressed on why they don't recover their dead or crashed craft:

Q: Why don't they recover their dead or crashed craft?

A: No idea. They cut their losses. Have any retarded cousins that destroy everything they touch? When do you want to see them again?

Abductions

The thread's discussion of abduction tools paints a disturbing picture that strips away any New Age romanticism about “star family” contact:

Q: What about abduction tools?

A: There are tools that induce a child-like state or something akin to having a stroke. Tools designed to take objects the size of pills and push them deep into your tissue and stomach, these tools aren't friendly and don't account for extreme pain. There's also a tool that looks like a circular battery designed for keeping your eyes open when deployed. It also stops the eye from moving almost perfectly.

Selection criteria for abductees followed a disturbing pattern:

Q: Do we know why certain individuals are selected for abduction?

A: They like picking from remote areas exposed to radiation or disease. They have a distinct fascination with radiation. When Fukushima happened the construction facility deployed multiple UFOs to the location over multiple weeks.

On the “orbs” commonly reported by witnesses:

Q: What about the “orbs” people see?

A: There are tools shaped like “hammers.” They emit extremely bright light and are used as a sort of drone or scout. They are able to view almost 360 degrees and detect everything from minerals to bio.

The Crash Recovery Process

The whistleblower claimed to work on “Team 2” of crash recovery operations:

Q: Walk through the process of a crash recovery?

A: First team deals with occupants and initial discovery. We arrive and meet with an external member who can touch and examine parts we are not allowed to interact with. We never have to cut our way into the UFO. First order of business is checking for E115 then leaving the ship to send it away. We return and look for any tools and loose objects that can be extracted. We then strip any specialized components, sensory equipment or navigation. A third and fourth team arrive to remove the bulk of the craft.

One haunting detail emerged about living occupants:

Q: What about living occupants?

A: One example was shortly after I joined, one was downed but two occupants were alive. The first team couldn't get close without being attacked. Aliens never seem to recover their lost UFOs so they just waited a few days until they died then recovered the UFO.

Government Structure & Secrecy

The organizational picture that emerged is one of extreme compartmentalization:

Q: What is the main body of government collecting information on UFOs?

A: It doesn't officially exist and I won't use the internal name on here either.

Q: Is the USAF kept in the dark?

A: The USAF is kept in the dark. We operated above them. A close coworker wondered if even the president knew, namely Trump because we both thought he would just tell everyone. I heard the phrase “Fuck Bill Clinton” thrown around regarding access to information. I'm pretty sure he asked.

On Space Force's role:

Q: What role will Space Force play?

A: Openly stated to us: discovery for internal use and disinformation to the public.

When asked why keep it secret:

Q: Why keep it secret?

A: Because most governments think the local population is stupid. They're not wrong. I do think the initial panic would be really bad, especially for religious communities.

But the whistleblower offered a surprisingly candid assessment about the state of secrecy:

Q: How have they maintained secrecy?

A: They haven't been able to maintain secrecy. That's a major reason the previous management didn't mind us being so open with each other. Now you know why I find references to MJ12 funny. Secrecy is all but gone, now it's just about obfuscation and misinformation.

Reverse Engineering: Who Has What?

The global picture painted a competitive landscape:

Q: What about other countries?

A: We used to laugh at Russian and Chinese designs. We stopped laughing at China when they produced an operational (but buggy) version of their mining equipment. Still stumps most of our engineers. Countries listed above have flight-capable craft, just not very good ones. China still scares us.

On American reverse engineering efforts:

Q: Have we created our own craft?

A: Modifying them to fire human weapons is a big thing. Generally trying to test and research ways to reduce inertia. Yes, we've taken them out of atmosphere a lot.

Commercial applications have already filtered into everyday life:

Q: Is tech from these craft used commercially?

A: A lot of your stealth aircraft sport smoother designs. Learning to track them helped with targeting software. Laser technology comes to mind since it's a crippled version of what they use. Lasers, you see lasers everywhere even in retail.

The poster implied Lockheed Martin's involvement with characteristic sarcasm:

Q: Is Lockheed Martin involved?

A: Such a great company, aren't they? Definitely wouldn't be the type to try to leak things to the public.

UFO Mining Operations

A consistent thread throughout the discussion: these beings mine Earth's resources.

Q: What are they mining?

A: They consistently mine gold. The last miner we looked at had a huge haul of gold, iron and silver. No dirt. Mining quite literally takes the resource out of the rock without leaving much dirt.

This mining operation provides a pragmatic answer to the “why are they here?” question that avoids both the messianic (they're here to save us) and the paranoid (they're here to harvest us). They're simply extracting resources while maintaining the planet's habitability. Zookeepers ensuring the enclosure remains functional.

2002: The Year Everything Changed

When asked about significant years, the whistleblower repeatedly emphasized 2002:

Q: Why was 2002 a big year?

A: A lot of activities and changes in operation both for them and us. A lot of secrecy issues surfaced that year as a result. Funding also jumped through the roof.

When pressed for specifics, they mentioned the Eric Davis memo (the alleged Wilson-Davis documents) and suggested the third page's date was “interesting.”

For UFO researchers, 2002 sits in an odd gap, after the initial post-9/11 chaos but before the modern UAP disclosure movement. What happened that year to cause such upheaval remains unexplained, but the whistleblower clearly considered it pivotal.

Nuclear Concerns

The beings' relationship with nuclear weapons emerged as a major theme:

Q: Has any form of communication been established?

A: Yes. They mostly want very little to do with us until we start to talk about war and nuclear options. It's one of the reasons why you see them so often at critical events. It's hard to get them to respond to us in general.

Q: Does this happen often with nukes?

A: About once every 10 years for the US. A higher-up joked months after the last one I saw that “The phone rings everywhere but the president's office.”

When asked why they didn't prevent Hiroshima and Nagasaki:

Q: If they interfere when there is a nuclear threat why didn't they prevent the WW2 nukes?

A: We never came to a solid conclusion other than they may not have realized our capability until we used them. They were interested in test sites but never actually stopped the ones we set off.

On their apparent objectives:

Q: What's their objective?

A: I agree they are here to observe and preserve. The idea was pitched that they are waiting for us to mature or perhaps something bigger to arrive and they don't want us to ruin the planet in the meantime.

Q: Why don't they just destroy us?

A: They could absolutely destroy us if they wanted to. They have started launch sequences before that we suspect were tests on “what they are dealing with.” My personal view is they have to stay out of our way but keep us from destroying ourselves.

The Interface Technology

One of the more science-fiction elements: the beings' computer technology.

Q: Are they aware of computer tech?

A: They know about ours yes. I doubt they could operate ours with our input devices though. Describing their version of a console/computer is really hard. It works by holding it and thinking about what you want. If you are distracted even slightly it goes to shit.

This thought-controlled interface suggests a level of technology that operates on principles entirely foreign to human computing, more akin to telepathy than programming.

Personal Revelations

Throughout both threads, the whistleblower shared personal details that either humanized them or (depending on your perspective) added to an elaborate character construction.

On motivation:

Q: Why are you doing this?

A: Yes, liver cancer sucks. I'm not going on national TV or radio. I'm on a 4chan board. Cancer makes you feel a little different.

On faith:

Q: Do you still believe in God?

A: Absolutely not.

On whether we might be their creation:

Q: Do you think we are their creation/experiment?

A: We both look very similar. It wouldn't surprise me and I'm inclined to think so.

On the dead man's switch:

Q: Is there a dead man's switch?

A: There is a lockbox that I've asked to be opened after my death. Hopefully part of that makes it to this board as I've instructed.

And in one of the thread's most human moments:

“It has a weird way of making you appreciate everything. I actually taste the water I drink now if that even makes sense. Appreciate it though, I'm pretty fucked.”

What They Wouldn't Answer

Equally telling is what the whistleblower refused to discuss:

• Specific department name
• Their educational background
• Facility locations
• Detailed reporting structure
• The Varginha, Brazil incident (“seems far out there”)
• Antarctica connections (mentioned briefly, then avoided)
• Highly specific technical questions (accused questioners of “samefagging”)

These omissions could indicate operational security concerns, holes in an invented story, or simple unfamiliarity with topics outside their claimed expertise.

Assessment: LARP or Leak?

Any honest analysis must acknowledge we cannot verify these claims. Anonymous posts on 4chan carry zero inherent credibility. The forum is famous for elaborate hoaxes, and “insider knowledge” threads appear regularly.

However, several elements distinguish this particular posting:

Factors suggesting authenticity:

• Unusual internal consistency across hundreds of questions
• Details that align with other alleged disclosures (Element 115, gravity propulsion, Gray descriptions)
• Pragmatic, almost boring explanations rather than sensationalist claims
• Acknowledged limitations of knowledge rather than claiming omniscience
• Willingness to say “I don't know” frequently
• Emotional elements (cancer, marriage strain) that humanize without melodrama
• Specific operational details about crash recovery protocols
• The “zookeeper” framing, original and consistent throughout

Factors suggesting fabrication:

• Anonymous forum with no verification possible
• Convenient inability to provide proof “yet”
• Some answers feel evasive or circular
• Terminal illness creates urgency that explains lack of documentation
• Sophisticated LARP creators can maintain consistency

3. It feels grounded but not polished. The tone is closer to a tired coworker venting than a media-trained witness. That informality makes it feel more authentic to some readers.

4. The human angle lands. A dying insider dropping secrets to a dying imageboard has a certain grim symmetry, whether you believe him or not.

The Bigger Picture

Regardless of authenticity, these threads articulate a coherent worldview that differs from mainstream UFO mythology in important ways:

1. Industrial rather than mystical. No spiritual evolution, no galactic councils. Just manufacturing, mining, and monitoring.

2. Indifferent rather than interested. These beings aren't here to help humanity ascend or harvest our souls. They're maintaining an asset (Earth) and its resources (including us, perhaps).

3. Pragmatic rather than paranoid. Government secrecy isn't about preventing panic or protecting power. It's simply about managing something they don't fully understand while preventing adversaries from gaining advantages.

4. Continuous rather than episodic. Not crashed saucers from distant stars making occasional visits, but a permanent, industrial presence operating for centuries.

This framework feels almost disappointingly mundane, which may be precisely why some find it credible. The truth, if this is it, isn't dramatic. It's just... ongoing.

Where Are They Now?

The whistleblower stopped posting after approximately two weeks, citing the toll of chemotherapy and frustration with off-topic responses. They left with a promise: the lockbox, instructions, and potential future proof.

As of this writing, no such follow-up has emerged. Whether that means the poster survived longer than expected, decided against disclosure, was fabricating from the start, or simply hasn't died yet, we cannot know.

What remains is this: two archived threads, hundreds of questions, and one of the most detailed accounts of alleged UFO program involvement ever posted online. Too detailed to ignore, too unsupported to accept outright. Is it an early‑2000s hoax or a genuine recording of an unknown craft? The video, also referred to as the Pordenone UFO, has a surprisingly intricate timeline and a long trail of debate behind it.

The video first attracted international attention in 2005, when Italian-American researcher Paola Harris presented a fourth-generation copy at the 36th Annual MUFON International Symposium in Denver, Colorado. Harris, who was then living in Italy, stated that the footage had been supplied by an anonymous source who associated it with the Aviano area. The identity of the original cameraman has never been established, and the severe degradation caused by repeated copying has made detailed analysis difficult.

The story begins with an anonymous VHS tape.

The footage was allegedly recorded in 2003 near the NATO air base in Aviano, Italy. In 2004, a VHS copy of the video was sent anonymously to the well‑known Italian ufologist Antonio Chiumiento, accompanied by a brief but ominous message:

“Ho paura” (“I am afraid,” in Italian).

The tape was subsequently sent to other Italian ufologists in the following months.

That year, Italian‑American journalist and ufologist Paola Harris presented the video at two major events:

• The 36th MUFON Symposium, in July 2005, in Denver, Colorado
• The International UFO Congress, in Laughlin, Nevada

The versions that later circulated on YouTube were largely derived from a DVD of her MUFON presentation.

Harris stated that she received a fourth‑generation copy from an anonymous source claiming it was filmed near Aviano Air Base. She believes the object is likely a terrestrial military prototype, specifically a remotely piloted vehicle, and says analysis in Boulder, Colorado, indicated a real physical object rather than pure CGI. The operator’s precise framing at the moment the object appears is seen as evidence of a planned test rather than a random sighting.

Paola’s statement:

This old video, which I have been showing for three years, was not provided to us, Italian researchers, by the Air Force. It is not one of our technologies. I had the tape analyzed in Hollywood by my friends Rob and Rebecca Gordon, who had the contacts and financial means to do so. This is a seventh-generation cassette tape. It was given to us without explanation. It is a real object that we see in the film. It was shown in my presentations at MUFON and in Laughlin, and then someone uploaded it to YouTube and Google. The video was filmed in the Veneto region, in Italy, in a place called Ponte di Giulio, near the NATO airbase in Aviano. It is a dry riverbed where the military was conducting maneuvers, and the cameraman had set up a tripod and was waiting for the object to emerge from the forest. I doubt that aliens appeared in that location.

Paola Harris’ Clarifications

In response to growing doubts over the tape’s origins and credibility, Harris published a statement to address the controversy. In summary, she emphasized that:

• The video was not supplied by the Italian Air Force or any official military source.
• She had the tape analyzed in Hollywood by trusted contacts who had both technical expertise and financial means to do so.
• The material came to Italian researchers as a seventh‑generation copy, already degraded and without a clear explanation.
• Analysts concluded that the object in the footage appeared to be a real, physical object, not merely a computer‑generated overlay.

Harris also described the filming location: a dry riverbed in the Veneto region, near a place called Ponte di Giulio, close to the Aviano NATO air base. According to her, military exercises were being conducted in the area, and the cameraman had set up a tripod, apparently waiting for the object to emerge from the treeline. Despite this, Harris herself expressed skepticism that the object was extraterrestrial, suggesting instead that it might have been some kind of advanced terrestrial technology.

On‑Site Investigation: Pinpointing the Location

Investigators Antonio Pischiutti and Stefano Saccavino visited the Ponte di Giulio area near Montereale Valcellina (province of Pordenone, Italy) to locate where the UFO video was filmed. They identified the exact spot on the left bank of the Cellina River, under the iron bridge on the SS 251 road. Based on the environment and perspective, they estimated the object was about 150–200 meters from the camera, moved from north‑northwest to south‑southeast, and was roughly 6–8 meters in diameter.

The area is heavily associated with military activity (near Aviano Air Base, test ranges, and a small emergency runway), as well as a nearby hydroelectric structure visible in the footage.

The investigators noted that the region has a history of alleged anomalous events, including supposed teleportation, a crop circle, a possible abduction, strange lights near Mount Raut, and recurring UFO reports near the Aviano base. They suggest the area might be either a hotspot for “extraterrestrial raids” or a kind of “Dreamland” for exotic military aircraft. They find the footage impressive, especially when the object suddenly darts away, but admit that the object initially looks too sharp and perfect compared to the background, raising doubts.

Pischiutti and Saccavino concluded that the location shown in the footage is consistent with an area near the SS 251 highway, a region of archaeological and military relevance, not far from Aviano Air Base.

Based on their calculations, they estimated that the object was approximately 6 to 8 meters in diameter. It appeared to move from north‑northwest to south‑southeast, crossing the frame rapidly before disappearing. If genuine, such behavior raises questions about the craft’s propulsion and nature. However, the poor quality of the available footage severely limited their ability to reach definitive conclusions.

Digital Analyses and Suspicions of a Hoax

In parallel, researcher Giuseppe Garofalo, from the SIRIO Nucleus, examined three different versions of the Aviano video available online. His analysis highlighted several suspicious features, including:

• Subtle shape changes during motion
• Anomalies suggesting the possible use of a physical model combined with CGI

One of the more striking fraud claims came from a user known as “onthefence” on the OpenMindsForum (unfortunately, their full analysis appears to have been lost and is not easily retrieved, even via WebArchive).

According to this researcher, the alleged UFO displays a blur pattern that differs significantly from the background. While some took this as evidence of a hastily rendered 3D model, onthefence argued that the discrepancy was more likely related to the contrast difference between the bright object and the darker landscape in the original footage.

Given the very low quality of the early online uploads, he argued that typical “pulsing” artifacts from quick 3D rendering would probably not be visible. Instead, he interpreted the mismatched blur as strong evidence that the saucer and the background were two separate layers: one genuine, one not. In short, the video appears to show a composite image rather than a single, coherent recording.

A Military Prototype?

Despite the fraud accusations, Paola Harris has maintained a different position. When she presented the video at the MUFON Symposium in Denver in 2005, she suggested that the object was likely a remotely controlled military prototype, not an alien spacecraft.

According to Harris, further analysis conducted in Boulder, Colorado, treated the object as a physical craft, not as CGI. A 3D reconstruction by Alberto Forgione supported this, depicting the craft with movable triangular thrusters, implying an advanced, deliberate design rather than a simplistic hoax.

In 2019, a Swiss YouTube channel dedicated to UFO sightings featured an interview with an alleged witness to the Aviano case. The man, an Austrian named Stefan, claimed that he was traveling through Europe with his wife and son when he and his son saw the Aviano UFO at the same time it was filmed from the riverbed. Stefan asserted that the video is authentic and matches what he personally observed. However, his testimony remains impossible to independently verify. There is no definitive way to confirm whether he genuinely witnessed the event, misinterpreted something, or is simply repeating information he encountered later.

In the end, the Aviano UFO case sits in a grey zone.

• The location appears to be accurately identified.
• Multiple researchers have confirmed that the setting matches a real, specific place near Aviano Air Base.
• Technical analyses have found both suspicious digital artifacts and signs suggesting a real three‑dimensional object.
• At least one alleged eyewitness supports the footage’s authenticity, but without solid corroboration.

What we do not have is the original, first‑generation recording or a fully documented chain of custody. The surviving copies are degraded, incomplete, and sometimes modified. This makes a final judgment extremely difficult.

As things stand, we cannot say with absolute certainty whether the Aviano UFO video is a clever hoax, a misidentified secret prototype, or something even stranger. The evidence is limited, the material fragmentary, and the investigations, while sincere, are ultimately inconclusive.

The first encounter was early on the morning of January 23, 1981, photographer Carlos Díaz was parked on a ridge in Ajusco, just outside Mexico City.

The air was cold and thin, and mist rolled slowly over the trees below. He was waiting to meet a journalist for a story he’d been hired to shoot, his camera gear laid out on the passenger seat.

Then suddenly, he sees a bright light spread across the valley.

At first he thought it was a fire. Then the light began to move, swelling and flickering like molten metal. That was the moment his life took a very strange turn.

Díaz quickly reached for his camera and began capturing the series of photos that would later make him famous.

The object seemed to rise out of the valley and drift closer, glowing in a deep amber color that lit up the trees around him. He said the car began to shake. When he stepped outside, the object hovered for a few seconds before shooting straight up and disappearing.

That first sighting left him rattled but fascinated. Over the next few weeks, he couldn’t stop thinking about it.

Díaz Returns to Ajusco

Over the months that followed his first encounter, Díaz claimed he returned to the hills near Ajusco again and again, drawn by a mix of curiosity and obsession. Each visit, he said, brought new sightings of what appeared to be the same luminous craft, sometimes hovering low over the treeline, sometimes rising quietly into the mist.

In these later encounters, the light no longer appeared as a simple glowing sphere. He described a distinct structure—something tangible and engineered. The craft, he said, had a domed top, a smooth ring encircling its middle, and smaller rounded shapes across its surface that looked like glass bubbles catching the light. Standing alone in the clearing, he watched it drift silently above him, its surface pulsing with a molten glow.

“invited” Aboard The Craft

This is where the story starts to get a lot stranger, and where most skeptics tend to bow out.

Years later, Díaz said he went back to the same ridge in Ajusco where he had first photographed the glowing craft. He claimed he felt a strong pull to return, as if something was waiting for him there. Standing beside his car, he noticed a familiar orange light rising once again above the trees.

Then, he said, something touched his shoulder and everything went black. When he came to, night had fallen and the forest was drenched from rain, yet his clothes were completely dry. By a nearby car stood a tall, pale-skinned blond man who told him he had already been inside the craft and that his memories would return in time.

Unlike classic abduction stories told by witnesses such as Whitley Strieber or Betty and Barney Hill, Díaz never described being taken by force. He portrayed his experiences as voluntary contact, a kind of invitation rather than an abduction. According to interviews he gave in the early 1990s, including one with OMNI magazine and later conversations with Jaime Maussan, he claimed that in 1989, several years after his first sightings, he was “invited” aboard one of the craft during a close encounter in the same Ajusco area.

Inside, he said, the craft was filled with organic light and pulsating structures, warm and alive rather than metallic or mechanical. The beings he encountered, he said, communicated messages about Earth’s ecology and humanity’s role in preserving it, rather than performing any kind of medical or experimental procedures.

In later years, Díaz spoke of vivid visions such as glowing orbs, crystal caverns, and journeys through light itself that blurred the line between physical contact and spiritual experience. His encounters, as he told them, were less about captivity and more about transformation.

The Documentary

By the early 1990s, the photos appeared in the press and in Ships of Light: The Carlos Díaz UFO Experience, produced by German researcher Michael Hesemann.

Supporters said the original slides were analyzed by Professor Víctor Quesada at Mexico’s Polytechnic Institute, who supposedly found no sign of tampering and said the light spectrum didn’t match any known source. The same claim has been repeated about NASA analyst Robert Nathan and image specialist Jim Dilettoso, though no full reports or verifiable records have ever been made public.

There was also talk of video.

One clip in particular is often mentioned: Díaz pointing a flashlight toward a hovering craft, which then shines a beam of light back down before vanishing. That scene appears in several YouTube uploads and UFO documentaries, but no one has ever produced the original tape with full metadata or proof of chain of custody.

Believers and Skeptics

Hesemann became one of Díaz’s strongest defenders and spent years traveling to Mexico to document the case. He described the photos as some of the best evidence of contact ever recorded. Harvard psychiatrist John Mack, who studied alleged abduction cases, also met Díaz and said he came across as calm, sincere, and deeply affected by what he’d experienced — a view quoted in the UFO Evidence archive.

Critics weren’t convinced. Researcher Bill Hamilton, who viewed the footage at Jim Dilettoso’s Village Labs, wrote that “the object descends in jerky motion as if suspended by a cable.” His comments appeared in Rense’s skeptical archive, where other analysts argued the lighting looked artificial and the craft behaved like a small, controlled model.

Hesemann rejected that view, saying the lighting and motion matched “plasma-type” energy rather than anything mechanical, comparing it to the so-called “falling-leaf” movement reported in other UFO cases. Neither side proved the other wrong, and the argument continues decades later.

Meanwhile, the nearby town of Tepoztlán began gaining attention for its own reports of glowing discs. Mexican journalist Jaime Maussan featured many of these stories on television and linked them to Díaz’s experiences. No official radar or aviation reports from 1981 confirm the sightings, but the overlap helped turn the story into a nationwide phenomenon.

Why It Could Be Fake

A lot of the criticism around the Carlos Díaz case comes down to how the craft looks. The glowing, honey-colored surface he photographed over and over has an uncanny resemblance to the glass lamps made by local artisans in Tepoztlán, the same town where he lived. When lit from the inside, those lamps give off a molten amber glow and a rippling texture that looks almost identical to what’s in his photos. Some people believe he might have photographed one of these up close and slightly out of focus to make it look like something floating in the sky.

The movement in the videos also doesn’t feel right. When slowed down, the light doesn’t move like a craft that’s flying on its own. It sways and dips, more like something hanging from a string or being lowered by hand. The brightness never changes much, which makes it seem more like a static light source than something that’s radiating energy or heat.

There’s also the question of access. Díaz has shown his photos and videos at conferences for years, but he’s never shared the original negatives or full tapes for open scientific analysis. Every review of the material has been limited to what he allowed. That, combined with his later stories about being invited aboard the craft and meeting glowing, human-like beings, makes the whole thing sound less like documentation and more like belief.

No independent witnesses have ever captured the same object, and there’s no radar or flight data backing up any of the sightings. For many, that’s enough to conclude the entire thing was staged using light, glass, and clever camera work.

Why It Might Be Real

The reason people keep coming back to the Díaz case is because the footage looks incredible. Even decades later, the photos hold up. The lighting is consistent, the reflections match the terrain, and the object seems to have depth and structure. It doesn’t look like a small prop shot in a dark room.

His early photos were taken on film, long before digital editing or easy photo manipulation. Some experts who studied the negatives in the 1990s didn’t find signs of trickery or double exposure. The way the light interacts with the environment seems too natural for a simple staged scene.

Díaz himself also never fit the profile of a hoaxer. He didn’t make money from the story or try to sell it to tabloids. People who’ve met him say he came across as sincere and grounded, genuinely convinced by what he experienced. He always described it as ongoing contact, not an abduction or a one-time event, which makes his story feel more personal than theatrical.

So while skeptics see a clever illusion, others see one of the most striking and sincere visual records in UFO history. And that tension, between skepticism and possibility, is what keeps the Carlos Díaz story alive.

The Evidence Trail

By the mid-1980s the images were shown at small UFO gatherings in Mexico City, where Jaime Maussan (yeah, the alien mummy guy...) began following the story.

Around 1988 the photos reached Europe, and Michael Hesemann flew to Mexico after seeing them. He filmed interviews and location footage in Tepoztlán, which later appeared in Ships of Light.

In 1991 Díaz began filming with a VHS camera and captured a luminous craft near his home.

Maussan obtained a copy that aired on Mexican television, making Díaz’s footage widely known. That same year came the “flashlight incident,” though no one has ever confirmed an original first-generation tape.

Between 1993 and 1994 the slides were said to have been tested by Víctor Quesada in Mexico and by analysts in the United States, including Robert Nathan and Jim Dilettoso. Their findings were never formally published but were often summarized as “no sign of trick photography.”

In 1995 Ships of Light premiered on TV, then spread internationally on VHS. Its imagery of glowing discs drifting over Mexico turned the case into a touchstone of 1990s UFO media.

By the late 1990s Harvard’s John Mack had visited and interviewed Díaz, and called him “spiritually grounded and sincere,” while skeptics like Bill Hamilton continued to argue the videos showed a hanging model. The debate carried into early internet forums through the 2000s.

What keeps the Carlos Díaz story alive isn’t just what he said happened but what was captured.

His photos don’t show a distant light in the sky; they show something radiant and strange, something that looks half machine and half alive. Even people who think the case was faked admit the images are beautiful.

To believers, Díaz’s experiences are about communication with something greater — an encounter that left him with a message about caring for the Earth. To skeptics, it’s a perfect example of how talent and imagination can turn an illusion into a legend.

Either way, the images still pull people in. More than forty years later, they haven’t lost their hold.

Where the Trail Ends

Almost every version of the footage today traces back to the same few VHS tapes from the 1990s. In May 2008, a short, 20 second low-resolution video surfaced on YouTube showing what appeared to be a disc-shaped object flying beside what is speculated to be a jet.

One of the earliest mentions of the “Flyby” footage seems to come from the UFO Chronicles website, where it appeared under the title “Flying Saucer UFO filmed from jet window.” The uploader, a user named Danny Lampkin, added only a short note: “not too sure about this one… you decide.”

Although, the actual earliest YouTube upload I could locate (though there may be older ones) comes from a user named frossani, who captioned it: “It’s a Blue Panorama flight from Rome to Paris on April 29, 2006.”

Interestingly, the version uploaded by frossani appears to be slightly higher in quality, suggesting that it may have been the original source for Danny Lampkin’s later post about two months afterward.

At first glance, it looks like something from the early YouTube hoax era. The quality is awful, the reflections are odd, and the footage feels almost too dramatic to be real. Yet the deeper people have looked into it, the harder it has been to dismiss.

Below is a breakdown of what makes this case so persistent after more than fifteen years.

What’s in the Clip

The Flyby video runs just under twenty seconds. It is extremely low resolution, typical for uploads in 2008, and filled with heavy compression artifacts. There are visible reflections across the frame, which has led many to believe this is not the original footage but a recording of a screen playing the original. That would explain the odd glare and crushed image quality, although that remains a theory rather than confirmed fact.

The wing visible in the shot looks very similar to that of an NASA F/A-18 Hornet. The sweep angle and shape of the slats are nearly identical, and the wingtips appear to have empty missile rails, which is a signature feature of the Hornet. The camera’s placement, slightly above and behind the pilot matches the angle seen in official cockpit recordings from NASA and U.S. Navy F/A-18 Hornets. These aircraft often served as chase planes, equipped with fixed cameras mounted inside the canopy to document flight tests.

These visual clues place the setting squarely within the type of environment where such footage could plausibly have been taken. It looks more like a cockpit camera view from a fast-moving military jet than anything from a passenger aircraft.

Audio Clues

The clip features a steady ambient roar that sounds consistent with what you might hear from an aircraft, along with what seems to be faint background voices, possibly a woman speaking. The audio doesn’t cut or restart at the video splice points, which suggests it’s continuous background noise rather than an added overlay. Some viewers believe it could be genuine cockpit audio captured by an onboard microphone, while others suspect it was added afterward to make the footage feel more authentic.

Reddit user /u/VCAmaster conducted a detailed analysis of the audio and attempted to isolate the voices, though it’s still impossible to clearly make out what’s being said (if anything).

Either way, the mix of low-frequency rumble and muffled airflow sounds surprisingly close to the recordings made inside F/A-18 cockpits. Even if it isn’t original, it fits the environment well enough that it adds to the illusion.

Timeline and Provenance

The earliest known appearance of the Flyby footage was in April 2008, when it was posted on the Italian website segnidalcielo.it (website no longer live) although here is an early archive of the page.

It states the video was filmed on April 29, 2006

The video was filmed on April 29, 2006 from aboard a Boeing 737-400 aircraft (pictured below) and specifically by a passenger on the window side of the central section.

The video embedded on that site links to the same YouTube upload from Frossani’s channel, so it’s likely that Frossani was still the original source of the video, and simply shared the video he’d uploaded there on this personal website.

However, a Reddit user claimed to have spoken directly with the original uploader, Frossani, and shared their exchange in a comment. According to that message, Frossani said he wasn’t the video’s creator — he copied it from a Zip drive belonging to a university friend whose father worked in Aviano, northern Italy, home to a major NATO air base. More on this below.

The Craft’s Design

The object itself has the classic “flying saucer” look: a domed top, flat underside, and a slightly tilted flight path. It resembles the well-known McMinnville photographs from 1950 and the craft described by Lt. Robert Jacobs in the 1960s “Vandenberg missile incident.”

Those similarities could be coincidence, or deliberate design choices if the clip was created as a hoax. Even Bob Lazar’s old claim that saucers “fly belly-first” has been used by some to argue the motion looks authentic, though that connection is mostly anecdotal.

The Alleged Comms Log

A few years after the video first appeared, an alleged military communication log began circulating online, with the original source being the /x/ board on 4chan. It described a fighter jet encounter with an unidentified object that appeared only a few meters from the cockpit during a radar intercept. The language in the log used authentic-sounding NATO brevity codes and AWACS terminology, which added to its plausibility.

The event described sounds eerily similar to what is seen in the Flyby footage, but no one has been able to prove the document’s authenticity or connect it to the video. It might have been written by someone familiar with pilot procedures, or it could be a genuine transcript from a classified report. For now, it remains an unverified curiosity.

The “Behavioral Data” Appendix

Another page from that same supposed leak was labeled “Appendix F, Section 4B – DoD 1992–2017 High-Value Witness Interviews.” It claimed that over 1,200 UAP incidents had been analyzed by the Department of Defense, distinguishing between UAP (aerial) and UASP (aerial and submerged) cases.

This document mentioned “mechanical life” and “organic species deploying autonomous drones,” which naturally caused a stir when it began circulating online. No government confirmation or credible source has ever verified it. Some have speculated that the Flyby incident could have been one of the “high-value witness” events referenced in that document, but this is only speculation.

Why the Flyby Footage Could Be Real

The Aircraft Match

NASA Research F/A-18 Hornet (chase aircraft):

The wing seen in the Flyby clip looks almost exactly like that of an F/A-18 Hornet. The sweep of the leading edge, the shape of the slat, and even what appear to be empty missile rails on the wing tips.

Those rails are a giveaway since very few aircraft have them exposed in that way.

That alone narrows the possibilities. The perspective in the footage isn’t what you’d get from a passenger window or from the ground.

It looks like the view of someone sitting in a domed fighter jet cockpit, which makes the F/A-18 theory a strong fit.

Fixed Cockpit Camera Setup

NASA’s chase F/A-18A fleet and some Navy training Hornets were fitted with fixed Sony camcorders mounted behind the pilot.

These cameras were used to record test flights and often captured the wing and the sky beyond it.

The Flyby video shows nearly the same angle and distance. The camera is steady, positioned slightly behind and above the pilot, and focused directly out over the wing. If you compare it to actual NASA chase-plane footage from the same time period, the framing and perspective are almost identical.

That’s not an angle most people would think to fake in 2008 unless they were familiar with how these cockpit setups actually looked.

It either happens to match by pure luck, or it was filmed from that kind of camera.

Reflections That Fit a Real Cockpit

Possible respirator reflection (MBU-23/P):

The reflections moving across the canopy glass look like what you’d expect inside a jet cockpit. You can see quick flashes that may be from the pilot’s helmet visor or the curved surface of an oxygen mask, possibly even a Gentex MBU-23/P respirator as seen below.

Details like that are tough to fake convincingly. Even if they’re not technically hard to reproduce, they’re unusually specific things to include for a simple hoax, especially in older footage. The subtle movement and layered reflections look natural, as if light is really bouncing off glass rather than being added in post. That kind of realism is difficult to achieve digitally.

The Sound Environment

The sound in the Flyby clip fits the part. There’s a low, steady rumble and muffled air pressure that match what’s heard in real cockpit recordings from F/A-18s. A few brief metallic hums can also be heard under the noise, similar to what onboard camcorders sometimes picked up from vibration inside the fuselage.

It doesn’t sound like a passenger plane, and it doesn’t sound like generic noise added later. Whether or not it’s the original track, it fits the acoustic profile of a real fighter jet recording.

Lighting Behavior

Near the end of the clip, when the object banks upward, it gradually darkens. That falloff looks consistent with natural sunlight fading across a curved surface. People who’ve enhanced the video frame by frame have pointed out that it darkens smoothly rather than abruptly, which isn’t how CGI from that era usually looked.

Even with the compression, the way the lighting changes across the object feels authentic. It reacts to the environment in a way that suggests a physical object was actually there.

Alternate Origin Theory: The Blue Panorama Flight

Another theory suggests the footage wasn’t filmed from a military jet at all, but from a commercial airliner. Some researchers have pointed the older upload of the same video that included a caption claiming it was shot aboard a Blue Panorama Airlines flight from Rome to Paris on April 29, 2006.

This upload predates the “Danny Lampkin” version and is the current earliest known source. The aircraft visible in the clip does resemble the wing and engine layout of a Boeing 737-300, specifically the Blue Panorama aircraft I-BPAG, which has led some to conclude the footage was taken from that plane. However, a Reddit user who says they spoke directly with the original uploader, Frossani, shared their exchange in this comment. According to that message, Frossani clarified that he wasn’t the creator of the video. He said he copied it from a Zip drive belonging to a university friend whose father worked in Aviano, northern Italy—home to a major NATO air base.

It was quite a surprise to discover all this hype and interest about a video I had almost forgotten. I am the owner of the YouTube Channel, but not the author of the footage. I had an interest in visual effects as a hobbyist and I used to collect some inspiring videos and fantasize on what techniques would allow to recreate them. The footage of your interest was copied from a Zip Drive belonging to a university friend of mine who knew about my hobby. We are not in touch any longer and I don't have further information about the origin of the video (I am not a UFO passionate, to me it was simply a probably-fake downloaded from the internet or some early-2000s CD-ROM). The only detail that could be useful for your research is that my friend's father's work was based in Aviano, in northern Italy. By the way, when I put the video on YouTube I didn't edit it in any way; the only intervention was on the description, in which I reported the details of a Blue Panorama flight from Rome tor Paris which had brought me to France some time before (it was then dismissed a few years later, to my great deception). I am sorry I'm probably not giving you relevant information for your research. Most importantly, he explained that the only change he made before uploading was adding a note about a Blue Panorama flight he personally took around that time. That small edit seems to be the sole reason the “Boeing 737-300” detail became tied to the video later on. If his account is accurate, the flight reference wasn’t part of the original footage’s metadata or context—it was simply something he added, unintentionally creating a false trail.

Frossani described himself as a visual-effects hobbyist who collected and studied interesting clips. He said he believed the video was probably fake or came from an early-internet CD-ROM collection, though others familiar with his work claim his VFX skills at the time were too basic to have produced something that realistic.

I can’t personally verify which theory is correct—the F/A-18 explanation or the Blue Panorama one. Both have their own reasoning and contradictions, so I’m including them here simply to show the range of possibilities surrounding the Flyby footage.

If Frossani’s statement is true, the Blue Panorama connection might not indicate a real flight at all, but rather a coincidental personal reference that became misinterpreted—adding yet another layer of confusion to one of the most debated UFO clips online.

From there, the discussion returns to the technical and visual details that keep the Flyby footage so compelling.

Technical Plausibility

Everything in the clip behaves the way real video would. The exposure doesn’t flicker, the frame rate is steady, and the motion blur looks optical, not digital. There’s no telltale CGI clipping or artificial jitter.

That doesn’t mean it’s genuine, but it does mean it’s technically possible this was filmed exactly as it appears: a cockpit camera capturing something strange passing close by. For 2008, it would have taken a lot of effort to fake that level of realism using consumer software.

Why the Flyby Footage Could Be Fake

Although convincing at first, there are several reasons why the Flyby clip might be an early digital hoax rather than a real recording.

Intentional quality loss. The degraded look could have been deliberate. Re-filming a computer screen hides compositing seams, masks rough edges, and buries rendering artifacts under pixelation. Many early CGI UFO videos used that exact trick to look more “authentic.”

Lack of realistic movement. The object glides smoothly across the frame without any visible parallax or turbulence. If it were actually close to a jet moving at hundreds of knots, there should be some relative motion or shaking in its path. Instead, it looks locked to the camera, which often happens when a CGI element is tracked onto a scene.

Lighting inconsistencies. In some frames, the lighting on the disc appears too even. It doesn’t reflect the contrast or direction of the light hitting the clouds. That might be compression, or it could mean the object was digitally inserted.

Missing aerodynamic effects. If something was really flying that close to an F/A-18, there would likely be heat shimmer, vapor trails, or air disturbance between them. None appear.

Cinematic framing. The object enters the frame at the perfect distance, stays centered, then exits just as the clip ends. There’s no extra footage before or after. That kind of precision feels planned, more like a short CGI test designed to shock viewers.

No verifiable source. Every known copy traces back to low-resolution reuploads. The supposed Aviano connection remains just a rumor. With no metadata, pilot identification, or secondary footage, the case lacks the basic documentation you’d expect from an authentic military recording.

Taken together, these points suggest the Flyby video could have been intentionally crafted to look like cockpit footage, using the limitations of early YouTube video to hide flaws. It might have been one of the more sophisticated UFO hoaxes of its time.

Where It Stands

The Flyby video occupies a strange middle ground between old UFO lore and modern UAP discussion.

What’s known: it was uploaded in 2008, appears to show a cockpit perspective, and contains reflections that fit a real aircraft environment. What’s unknown: who filmed it, when it was shot, and whether it ever existed in an original higher-quality format.

Until a verifiable source file appears or new metadata is uncovered, the Flyby footage will remain what it has always been: one of the most intriguing and persistent mysteries from the early YouTube UFO era.
